As a an 88 yo Chicano who grew up in Los Angeles barrios, I am very familiar with ELA circa the 1960-80s. The movie has a main story theme glued together with subplots. So, the actors' spoken "elements" have to fit the intended story and substories. This movie's actors "speaking and mannerisms" was about as authentic and "Brilliant" as you can get! Take it to the bank, this is what "Chicanos" from the era spoke and behaved like. The racial / ethnic conflicts between Blacks and Chicanos back then was real and still in effect to this day. Overall, the movie is 1000% as authentic as you can get for a movie....Take this to the bank! I retired from 20 years prison mental health services in a Southwest State.

Yup, one of my fav movies. Grew up in LA in the 60s and 70s. Cruised Whittier Blvd. mid 70s and left at 17 for the military. This is exactly as close as you can come. Popeye was a bit over exaggerated and not my fav character in the movie. Trust me back then a 13 year old was a man. 1st friend was shot and killed in 1973 going into high school many more followed. Only way out was the military or move away. Most joined the Navy or Marines so they could be close to home.
