He's not just toying with her! He's risking that she'll stoically leave him permanently, just as she left him for a month. He keeps up his ruse of an engagement to Blanche not only to make her jealous (as he later explains to her, and which is partly true), but also because he's giving her a chance to escape her relationship with him.

@pbtraveler could be that Charlotte drew it from her personal experience. But surely the timeframe already provides a context of certain social (translated to emotional) hierarchy so to speak? It's the masculine pride on one hand, but also the interplay with the class thing of the time.

Sorry Sybilla to totally disagree. Zelah Clarke is perfect in the role of Jane. She and Dalton seem to have very good chemistry and I think most people agree with me. Feminists seem to think there is no power in a girl who is quiet,meek, and calm these days. Sheneedsto be forever yelling and battling. Bronte did not depict Jane as a feminist but showed her as obedient and dutiful, knowing her ‘place’ in society according to the norms of that time. Zelah often showed plenty of spirit when aroused and her acting was often through those beautiful expressive eyes and slight nuances.

I've been watching all adaptations for 2 months now and I cannot come to terms that her rendition really left much to be desired. To me, he is the best Rochester paired with the worst Jane, sorry. They do not match visually and artistically, there isn't one scene where the fierceness and spark of young Jane comes through. She was probably directed to be meek and demure, but I find it so hard to match her with him to the point that I find some gestures ludicrous, for example when she says POSSIBLE SPOILERS 'It'll be weak to obey you' when leaving, closing her hands like a spoiled child Or when he reprimands her in the scene of the veil and she looks downward in a very subdued manner (indomitable Jane??) Or even the way she said she was tired and sick when she fainted. Very unconvincing. It really looked like she was just delivering her lines without passion or a hint of wit. How can possibly such a man have fallen in love with such a portrayal of Jane!? Were the character's intelligence and inner strenght supposed to shine only through few witty comments/replies, delivered without conviction ('God has all the answers' etc)? I apologize for being harsh, but after so much time spent watching (am working on this novel) I cannot help thinking what a waste. I know it is only an opinion, it's just that she's so different from the book

@SibyllaCumana28 күн бұрын
Thank you for replying. I have the possibility to translate your comments now (don't know why this option wasn't available before). I respect your opinion, mine is different. It's exactly because I looked beyond physical appearance (even if I do think the actress doesn't look 20) that I think there's no chemistry. Dalton carries the whole series which I love for his performance and the general atmosphere. But all these nuances in Zelah are undetectable: she just had one expression throughout the whole 5 hours, sparkling only in the scenes without Dalton (hence, she seemed to suffer his acting skills). Her character is meek, submissive, without fierceness or indomitable spirit (probably the director's choice). I imagined a different Jane, IMO Morton's portrayal was the best and I think she'd have been a good partner for Timothy

A trick, to be sure, but not one of malicious intent. Jane is such a reserved and self-contained person, it was perhaps necessary for Mr. Rochester to employ the strategy in an effort to draw from her some indication of her true feelings. He later confesses as much.
