If I recall correctly from the novel, Mr. Rochester's eyes were supposed to be almost unbearably intense, which Fassbender nails perfectly. I'm not sure the colour of them is all that important. I think this production is spot of with the intended atmosphere of Bronte's work. Also the language is excellent.

I don't understand why some people don't think she was a good Jane. I've read the book more than I can say and truly in the way she is written and the image of her in my mind she is a mixture of quiet/ restrained and passionate. This Jane is lovely, just a different interpretation, buy a different actress.

Mia IS Jane Eyre in my mind. I've read the book multiple times and seen many adaptations, but it wasn't until this movie that I felt like I was seeing the spirit of Jane Eyre (of Charlotte Bronte). She just nailed the Jane of the book.

The problem isn't her, it's the fact that the movie cannot delve into the character very much. Anyone who plays the role in a movie will usually be perceived as not understanding the character because they're not given the script that has as in-depth scenes as the book. If the actress is in a mini-series, that's a better option since they can explore the character more.

I don't know how much this will make sense but... whenever I read Jane Eyre and then watch a movie adaptation, there's always some kind of dissonance between what I'm reading on the page and what I'm seeing... either the casting is all wrong or the general atmosphere of the movie is off. This is the first Jane Eyre adaptation where I felt like the book and movie were working together, meant to be read and then watched. :D it's absolutely perfect.

Cary Fukunaga really captured the visual and emotional atmosphere -the feel of the book if you will- that Charlotte goes to great lengths to describe in her writing. This is exactly how i imagined everything when i read the book. Especially Mia. If only this was a mini series instead of a movie, then they wouldnt have had to cut the lovely banter between the two.

He asks Jane if she thinks it is wrong to go against custom to marry the woman and she responds that if the woman is of noble birth and would agree then why not. he asks who she is talking about (for he was talking about Jane) and she responds with Miss Ingram. He continues on talking about Jane but letting her think he is talking about Miss Ingram.

This version and the Timothy Dalton versions are my favorite. The Dalton version is very faithful to the spirit of the book, but the Michael Fassbender version is captivating with the emotional longing and pain that Jane feels. Also excellent in the modern context of Jane's morals. Today's women would have no problem being with a partner without marriage, especially with Fassbender. Though admittedly both Rochesters are too handsome per the book. But who really wants to see ugly Rochesters in a movie anyway. Much rather swoon.

The way they handled the Blanche-Jane-Rochester love triangle was so confusing in this movie.. they made it seem like Rochester genuinely didn't understand why Jane thought he liked Blanche!! Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't he purposely invite Blanche over to make Jane jealous and eventually force her to admit that she loves him?? I’m currently reading the book right now but saw this movie a few months ago. I loved this adaptation but have to agree that I was confused at Mr. Rochester showing off Blanche to Jane, and how suddenly it was Jane he loved. So apparently he was trying to use the jealousy tactic (still haven’t gotten to that part, but I’m fine with the spoiler). Thanks to this comment though. Helps me with reviewing the clips.

I hated the way they ended this movie. It was so abrupt. Overall it was a good adaption but I always thought the actress was too conventionally pretty for Jane. I think the 2006 version with Ruth Wilson is the best version. She was perfect as Jane, as was Toby Stevens as Rochester.

Lauranna I hate the versions that don’t go into the finally chapter! “Reader, I married him.” is such a famous line for a reason! People like happy endings! Would it have been so hard to add in a 10 second clip of them just being happy with their kids? I love the 2011, cinematically it’s gorgeous. Thematically, it actually captures the gothic horror element of the novel like no other adaptation (though some of those best scenes got deleted). I personally loved Mia’s performance (and Fassbender). But 2006 will always be the best because of Ruth and Toby’s chemistry. The final ~20 minutes of the series where you actually get the emotional payoff of the characters being happy and in love? Why do directors not get that we want to see that!

Understandably so. though. You need to remember that Jane is only supposed to be eighteen or nineteen years old and she has very little experience of the world. She hasn't encountered very many men in her life at all -- and most of the ones whom she's been acquainted with have been very unkind to her. Also, at the time in which the story takes place, men of Mr. Rochester's standing generally didn't treat a governess as if she were an equal -- let alone regard her as a suitable marriage prospect. At best, most men of his standing would (and sometimes did) attempt to seduce the governess and persuade her to become his mistress -- but they would never consider marrying her. Actually, being a governess back then was a very difficult job because governesses were socially isolated -- a governess was considered to be of a higher status than the servants but of a lower status than the family who employed her, which meant that it was difficult for her to find real friends in the household.

Bobsuruncle Mum Actually, yes -- this conversation does take place in canon. This must be the conversation following the scene in which Jane helps Rochester care for Mason after he was attacked, because they're in the garden and both are in nightclothes. Jane at this point is under the impression that Grace Poole is the one who attacked Mason -- she doesn't yet know that Rochester is married and that his wife is insane. Jane also doesn't realize that she and not Miss Ingram is the woman he's talking about. The "conventional impediment" of which he speaks is primarily Jane's status as a governess (which back then would actually have been a significant obstacle because they're of different social classes) -- but it also refers to the fact that he doesn't regard his marriage as truly being legitimate since he was deliberately tricked into marrying a madwoman incapable of fulfilling her role as his wife appropriately. Rochester knows that he's already married in the eyes of humanity (the law, the church, society, etc.) but is trying to convince himself that in the eyes of God, there's no reason why he cannot love and marry Jane because he was persuaded to enter his first marriage under false pretenses and would not have chosen to do so if he had been allowed to know the truth.

I like the way she portrayed Jane, the only thing lacking is her wittiness, which is more the fault of the script writers then hers. Jane may have been quiet but her intelligence and humor was shown in what she said rather then how she said it. I think taking that away made this portrayal of Jane Abit boring.

Was Mr Rochester 'ugly' in the book?His interaction with Jane is what grips you because of the light and dark shades of his character. He is a 'rough diamond' and is abrupt, forward and arguably, rude... but there is a softer more vulnerable side to him that is, heart breaking and endearing. He is the Beast hahahaha Fassbender is good-looking, sure but he isn't handsome in the traditional, archetypal... arguably - cliche sense of the word. This movie was darker and his portrayal of Rochester was second to none. He certainly captured the character's intense gravitas & his inner torment- yearning for love and redemption but finding himself trapped. I enjoyed this film, however, I still prefer the BBC series adaptation with Ruth Wilson & Toby Stevens. Not only was their chemistry... *everything* but Stevens' portrayal of Rochester was, to me, faithful to the nuances of his character in the book. Stevens conveyed the right balance of light/dark aspects of Rochester's innate being, and the interaction between the two is what endears him to reader/viewer. *Looks*... the physical appearance - to both character's is an afterthought and personally, i'm HERE FOR IT!

I'm excited to read the book. But I must say, I'm a little more disappointed with him after seeing the deleted scenes. I didn't realize he had so many flings with girls. It makes it seem like he's not as serious about this new fresh girl.

Mr. Rochester is supposed to have black eyes. Sorry that really bothered me seeing as how its one of his key features. The description they gave of Miss Ingram and Mr. Rochester in the book don't suit the characters here. Oh well.

I just watched the 2011 movie on Netflix and was interested in understanding the character of Mr. Rochester. Is it just me, or does Mr. Rochester come across as a self-centered selfish man who only wants Jane as an escape from his mess? I question, does Mr. Rochester ever love Jane, or does he only love what Jane can provide him? Also, the way he treats his daughter Adele is troubling, since she can’t give him anything worth value in his eyes, he discards her. This comes across as very militant and narcissistic, traits that women need to watch out for. In addition, Mr. Rochester also shows traits of manipulation and deceit, where he lies to Jane, plays with her emotions, and then threatens her with violence when she leaves. I understand Mr. Rochester is deserving of slight sympathy, but should Jane have really returned to him.

Mr. Rochester isn't a good man, he is a scoundrel, deceiver, liar and very selfish person at starting. He didn't really love Jane in the starting, he actually wanted to have possession over her, his own words in proposal scene were " I want to have you for my own entirely my own". But when Jane left him, only then he realised what true love is, and he did humble down in the end when he lost his wealth and vision and got crippled. So Rochester needs to be pitied only in the end, otherwise he isn't really a romantic character. He didn't like Adele because back then there was no technology of DNA testing and he caught Celine varens having affair with one young man, so he wasn't really sure if Adele was his own child or someone else. That's the reason why he wasn't much affectionate towards Adele.

Believed it or not but its more than one roschester jane speaks to old one got sick family came took him away second one middle age he too was eventually taken away (priest was more human. Meaning unkown)
