MATERIALS used to create this painting: Strathmore watercolour 400 series sketchbook, I use A4 size and did a review video (linked in the cards at 2:58), my main brushes are Silver Black Velvet no.8 + Escoda Reserva (Kolinsky Tajmyr) no.4, detailed brushes are czech-made (T-brush), stiff, synthetic and each was less than 1 Euro, you can find such brushes literally everywhere (even in stationary stores), brand doesn't matter just make sure the bristles are stiff enough to be able to draw with them. And my palette - I bought an empty metallic palette and filled it with artist watercolor paints, most of them are Schmincke Horadam and Daniel Smith. I also used masking fluid at the beginning, it's a very cheap one (below 3 Euros) by PEBEO, works just fine. I apply it with one of my old and already used up detailed brushes that is reserved for this purpose only. For metallic embellishments I used Finetech Coliro paints, you can find a review on my channel (linked in the cards at 23:33). Hope this helps :) I do not link art supplies right now, it is not hard to put these in google and find the closest shop or company to where you live and order them. I am sure you can manage :) And try to support your local art supply stores if you can, they are really struggling right now.

I can't speak for anyone else however, the "art class" experience you describe in school is exactly what I had. I loved the whole "if you can draw a circle, you can draw" theory. I couldn't draw a decent circle at the time thus my belief that I couldn't draw. It has taken me over 40 years to try again. Thanks to you and people like you on KZbin, my art is progressing nicely. THANK YOU!

This is a beautiful painting that you did and listening to your story that the guy that was really expressive could have used a pallet knife larger paper and a lot of water to express himself differently with watercolor that’s really fun to do

Your teaching is one of the finest on YT. And I watched a lot. Seeing you paint is very helpful. I am struggling in watercolor because I don't really like real life paintings of any kind. My themes are always abstract, undefined, very colorful. I love to paint the energies of t he subjects. What am I struggling with than, I switched to watercolor to paint light. And I try and try but it isn't working. I will not give up.

Thank you so much for your appreciation! If you enjoy abstract, I think watercolor is amazing for that, and maybe it's not needed to force the realism on yourself. I'd suggest using a lot of blooms, salty and alcohol (:D) effects to express yourself through accidental textures. And they even can be used to look like light when you make is transparent enough in different areas. Have fun 😍

This advice is so helpful. I am definitely guilty of having unrealistic expectations with my first attempt at something, or putting too much pressure on the outcome of a painting to be good when my focus should be more on the process and learning what I can regardless of the outcome. I've gotten better at it over the years but this video was a perfect reminder for me to practice more and stress less. 😊

This painting is breathtaking! I'm neither a native English speaker and I can follow you clearly, you're doing a great job! This video helped me a lot, I'm a real beginner, never could paint or draw and started with some tutorials a few months ago. Already in a creative bump, but your thoughts helped me to move on. It's so good to hear again there's only one way to be better: practice. Although I do know this, learnt some creative skills during the years but it's disappointing sometimes to be beginner again. But never will be better without try again and again and again. So thank you! :) (Hopping over to patreon:))

Hey Kata, so great to hear about your progress and journey, it is indeed hard to learn something new but as I said, I believe when you look at the process of learning and break it down into phases, you are able to already see the light at the end of the tunnel and that helps prevent blocks :)

Hi. Thank you for giving such thorough, well organized information on learning to paint with watercolors. That challenge can be stressful, but your encouragement to be patient with yourself and your particular learning curve is very helpful. Although I’ve been doing portrait watercolors for about four years, I know I can learn from your painting tutorials. I found, much to my surprise, that handling the watercolors was relatively easy. Now I find my challenge is to to loosen up and not be a slave to my reference photo. There is SO MUCH technique to absorb and then put brush to paper, that I will be a student for a long time. Anyway, thank you so much for your generosity in giving us the benefit of your artistic experience. Your work is a pleasure to behold, and I can feel the joy you pour into each painting. I’m eager to see your next posting! Sincerely, Judith Herring

Thank you Judith, it's exactly as you wrote - I am also trying to losen up and that gets harder than copying reference inch by inch. Takes a different mindset, but that's when art gets much more fun - for me at least! Thanks for your thoughtful comment ☺

Hi, Jane! Another water color beginner here. First of all I am absolutely in love with your art, style and content in general! I seriously wish I could attend your water color classes. I would like to ask what you use to clean your brushes from the ink? I could not find that information anywhere. I have winsor&newton white/black and gold ink bottles and I've used them, but the brushes I used were really bad quality only because I don't know how to clean my good brushes after using ink. Your advice on this would be invaluable. And again, I really love your channel! Thank you for creating all this content for us noobies out there.

Hey there Liliya, thank you for watching :) I am sure that manufacturers thought of that problem and developed all kinds of special media for cleaning brushes, sadly I cannot recommend anything in particular, since I never use anything else than a regular soap. But I am aware of the problem and I keep the brushes used for watercolour and for inks separate - for inks I only use cheaper synthetic brushes, nothing too fancy, and try to clean the brush immediately after use. This has worked for me, but again I do not use ink too extensively in my works.

@@JaneBeata Wow that reply was fast! Thank you! I use soap as well, I just thought there was a better way. I did try to look for ink remover on the manufacturer site of the inks, but couldn't find anything. Ah well, I'll stick to the low quality brushes then. Thank you for the quick response! ❤️
