I can't speak for everyone but charts are very important to me. I do them (in a smaller format) for everything whether it's by brand, by palette, or with a selection I plan to paint a project with. It really helps you understand the paint, and if you own a lot it's hard to remember what they all do if you haven't used those particular paints in a while. Regular swatches, mixing, glazing.. I'm constantly playing with my paint. Geometric designs are great fun if you are testing to see how different combinations work with each other.

It was a pleasure to watch. I love watching people swatch. I love swatching too. I do it more often than I need to. Your studies end up looking amazing!!! Also I wanted to mention that any art supplies that inspire you to paint, is a good art supplies. So I'm glad you found one that make the ride enjoyable. 💕 And lastly, something I'm trying to do recently is not to let lightfastness limit my creativity. I don't see oil artists worrying about it. And is very well know that some of the work of the great masters has changed trough time and pieces like the Mona Lisa will eventually fade completely. Everything ends. If possible I try to use art supplies with great lightfastness rating. But in the end I have to use what I have and can afford. 😊

It is a strange thing how soothing other people's swatching is...😀 I can watch for hours. I'm using and liking the PWCs more and more. Maybe because I don't fear to spoil very expensive paints and can use them unrestricted. Thanks for your presentation and the shop link. I just ordered 8 more colors. Korean paints from a czech shop, recommended by a slovakian painter, my local dealer here in Berlin is polish (PWC much better priced than @Jacksons), I like it. Greetings to Slovakia, where I once was for a hiking trip and loved it.

This is definitely going to help me. I tend to spend too much time on brows and lashes and it ends up looking completely fake and so not realistic. I also tested out the limited pallet you have used and I love it!! Will definitely continue to see what I can do with this in the future. I love Princeton brushes, they are my favorite. I use Velvetouches for both watercolor and acrylic. The Neptunes (faux squirrel) and Aqua Elites (faux sable) are first choice for watercolor. The Aqua Elites are nicer for watercolor than the Velvetouches, but the Velvetouches come in so many sizes and shapes.. just about any brush you could imagine. I'm on my third size 4 regular round Velvetouch lol.. It's the brush I reach for more often than any other. I've tried a ton of high end brushes and would rather paint with my Princetons. The price is super nice too.

Another great video! These are the cheapest artist grade paints at my local art stores, so I was curious about them. I also saw other Asian watercolors (Holbein and Mijello) for sale and they look great but they flow less than western watercolors. You said these were flowy so do you think they have ox gall in them?

Sure, this is a field watercolor easel from Jackson's Art supplies, but it's horrible, was expensive and I can't even seem to put it back together as it belongs. I really woudln't recommend it and they no longer even have it available for purchase. Watercolor easels are hard to come by though, too bad.

@@JaneBeata I use a table top drafting board and I love it. It's large, has a rail at the bottom to set blocks or stretching boards on but is a solid board so you can tape sheets directly to it if you wish, and it's adjustable to many angles. I like to paint at about a 45 degree angle which is higher than some and lower than a standing easel. I bought mine at a local craft store but just about everyone sells them. I used to have an actual drafting table with the adjustable top and drawers under for years.. but I lost it in a natural disaster.. when I repurchased I went for the table top version because it was less expensive and I could get one locally in store, I would have had to order a decent quality drafting table in my area... and I NEEDED to paint immediately. I'm just not a happy person without my art. I also like the fact it leaves about a third of my desk flat, with the full table the entire top had to be either up, or down. Now I have a place for my palette, water, brushes, etc without the need for a separate table for them.

Yikes! I could never do studies on such a gorgeous piece of (expensive) paper! That’s probably why my studies are crappy, because I use cheaper paper (cellulose) which acts so differently than cotton paper. But still.......

Aw sorry! I guess I have a lot of paper lying around the studio...I purchased quite an excessive amount two years ago, mostly for workshops that were cancelled and didnt get to use these papers in class at all. It was just sitting here, gathering dust and I was afraid to touch it, you know ... saving it for the "important" works. But that large block sat on the easel so well and I guess I didn't realize it might have been wasteful for studies.

@@JaneBeata in my experience, using expensive paper for any kind of paint activity is better than not using it at all. And watercolor paper expires. Sadly, I found out about when my precious hot press Arches was starting to expire. And painting on it was a nightmare. So, use all that paper, don't be afraid.

@@paulinabm_ I agree 100%. Use it before you lose it. You should practice on the paper you want to paint on. They are all different so it hurts more than helps to learn on one and then try to switch and create something on another.

@@JaneBeata good for you. Too expensive on our side. It’s a nice watercolor though. Some artists in Skillshare use that. The colors are so vivid.

Lightfastness is very important to me. I just never want to worry about what I'm using, whether it can be framed and displayed in a normal fashion. I tend to have "surprise" successes with watercolor.. sometimes amazing things just happen.. and I want to be able to keep those whether I intended it to be a full work or not. PWC requires more caution because they use many older less expensive and less stable pigments, but you just have to learn all of the pigments and pay close attention when purchasing... especially with yellows, oranges, and reds. White Nights and the other similar brands are another you have to be more careful with. In my experience, every single brand has issues with lightfastness so you can't blindly trust any of them. Daniel Smith just for example is horrible, so many of their LF1 rated paints fade in real life UV tests. The actual pigments used tell the tale. I never buy a set of anything anymore, I hand pick individual paints from each brand that fit my qualifications. It's more expensive that way but I start with a core limited palette and then add a paint here or there if I want later. I always paint with a limited palette anyway these days, 4 to 9 colors max, so I'd rather have exactly what I want than a bunch of colors I won't use. The key characteristic of PWC I like that sets them apart is the low flow wet into wet. They blend but are so very easy to control. Really nice when doing florals where each petal or leaf is a series of wet into wet blends, sometimes in very small spaces. Some other brands it's much harder to keep the colors separate to show dimension.. yet smooth at the same time. They either all flow into a solid shade, or want to be streaky. It's a very popular brand in Asia.. the majority of Asian artists I see use either PWC or Holbien.

I've heard some artists in reviews said that they don't glaze well. But isn't the watercolor paper they use more of the important factor? Some papers hold on to the color while others are harder sized, making it easier to lift. I'm getting Baohong paper which holds on to the paint, so I think it won't be too bothersome if I buy Shinhan.

@@krabfingers8473 The paper is extremely important... I've seen many paint reviews that blame the paint when it was really the paper. I tested over 50 different types of watercolor paper a couple of years ago and they tend to either lift or glaze depending on the sizing, and more brands lift than glaze. I want my paint to stay put and seldom ever lift.. if I do it's right away on wet paper.. so it really limits my favorite paper list. Baohong is great for glazing. I have found opaque colors lift more than transparent ones in general, because they sit more on top of the paper vs sinking in. If you want to see the flow of the Shinhan in action check out "veryhyun's watercolor" channel on YT, they do very short wet in wet floral videos very close up so you can really see how it moves.
