I am a musician myself. On the song "When I Think of You" (released in 1986 Control album) the base line is very similar to the Prince song " Cream" ( released in 1991) on the Diamonds and Pearls album. Two things I could always hear the "Minneapolis sound" influence on that record. Second, Prince was known to stockpile songs for years before utilizing them. Who knows? A lot of very talented people. I’m confused as h*ll. “Nasty Girl” by Vanity 6 was released in 1982. How could that song had been for Janet Jackson’s “Control” when the Control album was released in 1986. The “Control” album wasn’t even a thought let alone a vision in 1982 when “Nasty Girl” was released. Also, in 1982 when Janet released her first album simply titled “Janet Jackson.” She was under the management of Joe Jackson. Janet had no musical ties to Prince. Joe Jackson didn’t even like Prince music. Do Peggy not realize that “Nasty Girl” was released in 1982. I don’t understand how Peggy is trying to make that story work. I believe Peggy is confusing herself. There was a article written a few years ago of songs that were originally written for artist, but was turned down and given to another and “Nasty Girl” was no where in that list lol!

David essentially confirmed what Prince himself, declared in his own shady way. Everyone mentions the Tokyo 1990 show when Prince infamously says, “who wrote that?!” going into what have you done for me lately. You don’t often hear mentioned the 1986 1st Avenue show, when Prince goes into the vamp for Christopher Tracy‘s parade and announces on the microphone “Jimmy jam, I don’t wanna hear this on your record.”
@dcride36 Жыл бұрын
Okay, here's the truth (I respectfully disagree with David Z). Terry and Jimmy used to same LINN Drum machine Prince used on most of his albums to produce Janet Jackson's "Control" album. That does not mean they took his licks. Any similarity on grooves or sound is purely coincidental and due to Jimmy and Terry trying to keep the integrity of the Minneapolis sound in their music. Also, for those that do not know, Michael Jackson used the LINN drum on his "Thriller" album -- one year before Prince used it to produce "1999." Hence, their will always be similarity in sound if you use the same LINN drum programming and synthesizer. David Z suggesting that Jam and Lewis somehow ripped off Prince's tracks is totally false, since dozens of music artists, to include Michael Jackson, have used that same LINN drum and similar synthesizers to record their music.

Not sure I can agree with the statement they stole licks from Prince. I have played keys since the Control album came out. Outside of using a square wave synth sound (common patch on most synths these days) there isn't a "lick" I would say is the same as Prince. In fact, most of the Control album was Mirage factory samples. Of course there is comparison because they come from the same camp, but to say they stole licks seems excessive

Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis’ work with the SOS band is some of the most jamminest jams ever. Either it is the sound and era in time in music that cannot be matched by musicians from the same Hometown. I believe Janet Jackson's first album was released in 1982 possibly. So I'm not sure where the Nasty Girl cover comes into play, since the VANITY 6 album came out the same year. Although, a remake of the song for the CONTROL album may have worked. But, I don't see it. Did Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis rip off PRINCE's sound for the CONTROL album in 1986? Hard to say. All of these cats were brilliant in their own right! Back in the day, I never thought of their work and sound as being a PRINCE bight. I thought that they were legitimately funky! There were plenty of excellent bands coming out of Minneapolis during the 1970s thru the 1980s. I highly recommend the compilation called PURPLE SNOW. It highlights the Minneapolis sound during that period. PRINCE wasn't the ONLY bad muthafucka to come out of that scene. He was THE baddest however!
