This catalogue brought so many memories back for me ! I was 11 in August 1980 I had about 14/15 of the sets shown - mostly town, space and the Creator type sets ! Have sold most of these now - I now collect town service vehicles, police sets (dad was a policeman), Creator sets - got some pretty rare ones, the Christmas themed ones and the odd one or two items that catch my eye !!! I'm 47 and still a kid at heart !

15:25 That top left set - Beta-1 command base was the first Lego Set I ever got! My parents picked it up 2nd hand from a yard sale and amazingly it still had the original box, instructions and every piece. I was so in love with Lego after that and I remember thinking what a vast expanse the set seemed to cover for my childlike brain. To be this set really captured the feeling of being on the moon, with the huge wide open space that my imagination created around the set. Simpler times!

Aaaaah! Set 733! Your enthusiasm for the set below that matches mine for 733. I had that set and loved it - the helicopter had a working winch which I thought was so cool, and the yellow "Pac Man" claw for picking up dirt or 1x1 cylinders was my favorite. I still have that exact piece and the springs inside still works and it is in amazing condition. I never played with my Lego sets outside, so no real dirt was ever used. :) I have many, many of these catalogs from those days too - while most of my toys, I donated to others, the Lego sets, I never parted with, and only got rid of the boxes in 2004 [ugh, i know; but i kept all the instructions and catalogs!], when I moved from CA to NC. This catalog brings back so many good memories; I was 8 when it came out and was building many, many spaceships, command posts, rovers, etc - had a few town things, but mainly space and knights sets for me as a kid.

Interesting that they produced a different catalogue in the US. Some of the titles are different. I remember this issue. In the UK 'family room' was 'living room', 'Gas Station' was 'Petrol Station' and we had Shell rather than Exxon.

Doug Las shell was also common in the Netherlands. Shell has paid a lot for it i guess.. lol

I love those time warp. After watching this video, I went to look at my collection of old catalogs, mostly from the early 90's. But seeing new stuff is always giving me that childish thrill back. I really like the 6375 gas station and 952 tractor.

Greetings from South Africa! This brought back so many memories for me. I remember getting my first Lego set in 1980 - it was a Basic set (similar to the universal building sets in your catalogue - perhaps just so named in South Africa at the time) but didn't contain a minifig. The following year my brother got a police set for his birthday that contained a minifig - I was so jealous! I also remember having the fuel pumper truck, although mine was a Shell version. Back in the day we could still buy Lego with our pocket money - unfortunately it isn't the case today. At the moment I am an adult fan busy developing my own Lego city, but it's a slow and expensive process. Thank you for the wonderful blast from the Lego past!

My son is playin' with my old 'playbox'-Duplo-house in the beginning of the catalogue. One of the only things that has survived since my childhood. It's actually broken in half and only one side of the house remains. But he is building on top of it with his new Duplo bricks and loves it :-)

Thanks for posting this, what great memories. I actually had the Duplo police station and I believe it was my first LEGO set which started a life long love of LEGO. There's still a universal building set box in my parents' basement though the pieces are long added to the big bucket of LEGO.

Interesting piece of history. The 8888 ideabook cover is featuring the then upcoming 8860 as a building suggestion. Plans change, the car chassis is made into an official set and he cover changed to a tracked bucket crane.

Geez, brings back old memories, some of those sets. So many I wish I had from the City and Space lines. I kind of have mixed feelings on the redesign of the Lego city road plates. I miss the older ones, because they gave you more room on the sides for building up on. Might be a bit of a squeeze for the newer, 6 stud wide vehicles?
