One incredibly talented person. Her voice is still perfection and her words are still filled with wisdom...AND humor. Saw her live a few months ago in Dallas and I didn't want to leave. It was pure bliss for me and my husband. To have her as a friend would be one of those things many dream of. And she is right...after all she has been through since such a young thing, via the music industry (the good, the bad and the ugly....), her business IS about dreams. I'm glad she shared hers.

I heard this song in 1976 when Janis Ian sang it..It blew me away and brought me to tears...I once went out with a girl on a turn around dance...she weighed 275lbs I was harrassed by some people but she was certqinly the Janis Ian character in her song. Ive never regretted that,saadly she passed away some years ago..I was never one to make fun of anyone..regardless of how they looked or what they weighed..I was taught to be kind to everyone by my Grandmother..who was and always will be sainly to me.

Heard it again 2 weeks ago and now that song is bouncing around in my head. I was 17 in 75, and though not popular, but also not ‘ravaged’, but my heart went out to the ones this song portrayed. I have 6 kids, and each was popular in their own right, but I taught them that the unpopular ones deserve the same breathing space as anyone....and to show respect. To this day; it’s still sad when I listen to it...very powerful.

Janis was gracious enough not to mention the screw up in the way she was introduced (wrong title and mispronouncing her name). I applaud her. She is a true legend. Congrats to Janis!!

Richly deserved award for one of the finest living singer/songwriters, now an inventor of a new literary format as well --- the spoken autobiography with musical illustrations. Listen to Janis' music if you haven't done before, she is totally amazing.

Janis Ion ? i alway thought it was Janis Joplin that sang the song. Anyway This Janis is still alive and well? I loved that song I could feel the pain that a young girl could feel being left out. All though looking back 50 years now I was NOT UGLY as I thought. I was treated ugly. So a pretty girl can be subjected to feeling she is worth nothing also. And will settle for less. A very emotive song of a desperate heart longing to be accepted by society but most of all by ones own parents, and especially her mother. From whom she was never accepted even in her mother's last dying months. If the daughter had been a stepdaughter she may have been able to understand the rationale of why would a mother would need to compete against. an obedient daughter. If people Praised this Eldest daughter's diligent hard work she did for the family farm. The mother would make sure to say that it was not hard work at all and that she was just being kept ( tax deduction) At 17 the daughter, after a hard day's work and cooking dinner, was made to sit and eat alone in an adjoining room away from the family. To spite the father because he had brought in a boarder, and did not want the daughter eating at the same table as he. Religion, ignorant Parents can destroy the psyche and spirit of a young person that will follow them into the future. yes i do feel this song.....

Hi there Dear Miss Connie Funny but even pretty girls feel and believe they are ugly, this forms a negative way of thinking that they are not worthy. It's important that parents make their children feel worthy and deserving of good things, Instead of the reverse

Dear Miss Connie I am sure that you are a swan, We look the way we feel or believe that we are I'ts the inner soul that is beautiful but we must also believe it for it to glow. I feel and think I can see that beauty of heart makes one age more slowly and softly, true malice and slyness show up as hard lines on one's face Cheers have a great day

Carmel Correale young girls are so fragile in ways...i never thought i was pretty either...my mom fawned over me but dad not once said I was or am pretty...in fact was always very disapproving, still =:O
@carmelcorreale32119 жыл бұрын
Erin Leigh Stokes Is you dad still alive? I feel it is because they don't want us to get a swell head. Not much praise comes from my mother or father's town, I believed they were all very cold. But I don't believe so. My mother used to say that if a woman did not have a dowery where she came from a woman would not be able to marry. This is because the men are trying to support the family sisters . I used to ask don't they get married for love what about the real pretty ones. She said no they would need to join a convent. I know my cousins from same town one older another younger than I . They also kept at home to work the fields but they had a TEA BREAK IN THE AFTERNOON and aunty used to buy them these beautiful nylon dresses with lots of flouncy netted petticoats. I got plain cotton, As though I was not good enough for anything pretty. And I always felt undeserving. Do you know I was about 13 and she stopped me and said I was swaying my hips side to side and that I had to walk straight one foot in front of the other pointing straight ahead. Well I don't think that is natural I feel like I'm in the forces.

Pretty regrettable that a native American got Janis Ian’s name wrong AND the title of her audiobook, which is the same name as the groundbreaking song that caused Janis Ian (not iron) to be spat on in the street and receive death threats due to the subject being an interracial relationship in 60s USA.
