When you watch these videos of Waldner now, in the year 2020, you see why he was such a special talent...in any sport, someone like Waldner is a once-in-a-century type of athlete.
@usermk99
@usermk99 11 күн бұрын
Once in a century is bit too much. Yep he was the legend. But after a few years another great ruled table tennis world and won more titles ever when the game actually have become far more competitive. BTW, this match video wasn't one sided too, 3-2 is a close match. I am also fan of Walnder but don't like exaggeration.
@adrame6258

@usermk99 You have to consider the broader context of Waldner's success. He comes from a country that had less than 10 million people at the peak of his success, and dominated a country with over a billion people, where TT is a national sport and millions of people play. Sure, other players have won more titles than Waldner, but those players are Chinese, which is expected. Statistically, Waldner is an anomaly in the world of table tennis and his success isn't defined only by the number of medals he's won. We will see more Ma Longs in the future, but another Waldner will not come anytime soon.

@@adrame6258 Well, I respect your analysis, however I have different point of view. I don't consider geographic situation as ultimate deciding factor. I consider passion & dedication above everything. Otherwise, think of it as China & India are together 3 billion people. Its nearly half of entire planet versus rest of 200 countries, so by same logic, these two countries should be at top of every sport in the world, every invention should be from these countries, etc. But that's not the case. More population has drawbacks of its own. If you see economies per capita, you will see western countries are far ahead from overly populated countries. That means more resources, earnings, opportunities per individual. Most of raw talent in overly populated countries is never even recognized, but same talent in western world will be recognized and polished. So if we have to compare an individual sportsman versus another individual sportsman then population of country isn't a huge factor. However yes if we are comparing country vs a country in a specific sport then ofcourse country with more available players has an advantage.

Waldner was the 'ice-man' of ping-pong in resemblance with Borg in tennis, but even tougher at the moments where it all counts. Simply the world-wide ping-pong genious from Sweden! 👌👍

@@borisgraell They thought it would be better for TV, so you can have commercial breaks in between shorter games. And, I suppose, they thought shorter games would bring more intensity.. I personally don't like the 11 point games. A couple of nets and edges and that might be the game.

16 points would have been acceptable. But 11 points is a little tight for a good game. First of all, 11 points game is more stressful than 16 or 21 points. Because there must not allow a mistake.

Waldner has the top forehand structure in the world,using waist and leg to force instead of using arm and hand.Now many european players's forehand are awkward and not standard,I think ITTF should arrange good coachs in the west instead of making the ball bigger to prevent chinese player from taking the championship.

Thanks for the upload! This video is much better than I expected. This is genuine TT. What spins did these 2 dudes produce? The 21-points match requires more planning and execution. This genuine TT game is a skill, execution, and mental toughness competition. I sincerely hope that TT can convert back to the original state.

I've seen that Waldner, Kong Linghui and Zhang Jike they play like in a "calm" style, you don't see them like hiper-active, or jumping nervously during points, and yet they can be fast and lethal.

Kong had big trouble when using FH to receive Waldner's BH short serve. Why Kong not used his BH receive more?
@dickn.ormous1064
@dickn.ormous1064 Жыл бұрын
Because all players in those days had more touch with their fh.There was Persson who could push with the backhand even from the fh side,but he has much bigger wing span. Also receiving with the bh would make a player more vulnerable to shots to the body.

Look carefully at around 7:28. The ping pong ball never really (or it seems) touch the table as if Kong Linghui catched the ball in mid air. It could be due to the poor quality of the video, but I couldn't hear the sound from the ball hitting the table either.

Think it bounced OK. Sound quality not great. And if he'd volleyed it with the ball still dropping (with that steep/closed bat angle) the ball would've gone straight into the net, I reckon!
