I am from Davao, Philippines. Before the war, the city had a sizable Japanese population already even calling the city “Little Tokyo”. They started out as carpenters and labourers in the early 20th century and became landowners of vast Abaca/Manila hemp plantations before the war started. Until today, there’s a lot of Japanese descendants that are actually recognized by the Japanese government and many of them immigrate to Japan once they’ve got papers to prove it. Very common here yet very unusual anywhere else in the Philippines.

It’s very weird to think that there where sizable minority groups before ww2 that just got kicked out, fled or left for better economic conditions in the least expected countries. Some Latin American countries also had small Japanese farm communities. And German language use really declined in the US. That’s not even thinking about China, Europe or the Holocaust.

I've heard a fair amount of Wake but never really looked into it, only to find out that Wake is really just a footnote in the greater conquest, that whole deal in Thailand is just next level, such a long campaign and yet we never hear about it, I get that Thailand was basically neutral but I mean, they were still impacted to some extent

This is superb. I had no idea just how exponentially larger the later war was from the beginning until I started watching these videos. Guam was defended by only 500 -odd men on Dec. 7th 1941. When it was re-taken in 1944 it was assaulted by roughly 2 1/2 DIVISIONS, nearly 50,000 men, a force roughly 100 times the size of its original garrison. The Japanese had no idea what they were stirring up when they began the war.

I've followed your channel for a long time and I'm very pleased that this episode mentioned my hometown Kuching in Sarawak. It's very much often overlooked in the grander scope of things in WW2. During Japanese occupation, the IJA were very brutal to the Chinese diaspora. My grandfather was severely beaten by Japanese soldiers, suffered multiple broken bones, and they looted his house of priced belongings. Eventually they fled to live in the jungle to avoid persecution until the end of the war.

The Japanese invasion of the Dutch East Indies (NOI) is personal family history. Both of my parents, were in their teens, when this happened. My father & many uncles would have been drafted into the military (KNIL), had they not already been in Japanese prison camps. Heck, many uncles, were already in the KNIL (Dutch colonial army), and still became POWs, for the exception of two uncles (one brother of each parent), who ended being in British units during the remainder of the war. One of my father's brothers died in a Japanese factory, as slave labor. My maternal grandfather died in a prison camp. He was sent to the NOI, as a solder, in the regular Dutch Army (not the KNIL), to put down the Aceh Rebellion, back ~1900. Stayed in the army until retirement, and raised a family, in the Indies, only to be interred by the Japanese. The Japanese occupation, and all that went on, was regular discussion, during family get togethers, when growing up.

The title of this video should have been "The Week After" but I admit it would have not been catchy. Kudos for covering the day by day development of the war across all countries in the Pacific. It shows how well the central command of Japan operated. Let's not forget that this was the 1940s where communication technology is limited and the countries they invaded were mostly jungles, villages and small towns.

It's interesting to hear about other locations in the Philippines during the Japanese Invasion. Provinces in Visayas (except Leyte) and Mindanao were mostly ignored in the history books. Most just mention Manila, Bataan, and Corregidor Island. After Bataan fell, other areas in Visayas ang Mindanao continued the fight, but are rarely mentioned in history books as a lot of them are guerilla fighters and some of them continued the fight even after World War 2. The entire US-Philippine military should have been in full alert after receiving the report on Pearl Harbor at December 8, 1941 2am Philippine Time. But they were not expecting the Japanese would start the Philippine Campaign at Cagayan Province at Northern Luzon. Note that the J in Jolo is pronounced like the Spanish J (H), so pronounced as Ho-lo and not Dzo-lo.

Just some quick constructive criticism; the 'Invasion of Borneo' written on the thumbnail is covered by the video length(16:01). Maybe try to move it over in the future. Can't wait to watch it, love your videos, keep up the good work! :)

For someone not very familiar with this conflict, it's quite confusing with the island hopping back and forth. I wish one island was done from start to finish (in a video) - even though the island attacks obviously happened simultaneously (which is why you're hopping back and forth) - but with a timeline or something at the top of the screen, or either side, of each concurring island attack going on. While your map is very beautiful, to me it's a little bit hard to see what's going on when hopping back and forth (perhaps due to the many colors). I absolutely love this series, by the way. Good job!

As a Bruneian i got triggered when he said Serai instead of Seria lol. But throughout the video it was amazing and made a very good job explaining about the invasion of Borneo Interesting fact that i learned from my history class: The British troops destroy the oilfield in seria into rubbles until it was not operational and disabling the japanese troops from using it, as it can take a long time to rebuild the oilfield operational again

Excellent stuff here. My dad was in Burma soon after this, under Stilwell, not the proudest segment of our war effort, but fortunately not central to the ultimate outcome of the war in Asia or in the Pacific. Our strategy or apparent persistent lack of a coherent one, in Burma and its “vicinity,” almost looks like the chronic vestige of this disorganized military response to the initial invasions that seem to have caught the Allies by surprise and in an obvious state of ill-prepared disarray, from which it took a while to awaken.

It's a good series, and this is a good episode. It's marred only by the very first sentence. From a strategic perspective, war coming to the Pacific was no surprise. It had been expected for years. It was the inevitable consequence of the US oil and steel embargo. Both the United States and Britain had been making preparations for this war. This was why the US created and implemented its Two Ocean naval strategy. With the Bismarck gone and the Kriegsmarine constituting no significant threat to the Royal Navy or convoy operations, Britain had been diverting more and more of its navy strength to the Pacific. Britain had reinforced the garrisons of Malaya and Hong Kong. But nothing could overcome the mishandling of their forces by Tom Phillips, Douglas McArthur, Arthur Percival or Husband Kimmel. They all handled their responsibilities dreadfully. One died for his incompetence (Phillips), one spent the war as a Japanese POW (Percival), and one was sacked (Kimmel). McArthur continued on to cause the unnecessary deaths of thousands of Australian soldiers in New Guinea. All four may have had difficult situations at the outbreak of war with Japan. But this lot merely served to make matters worse.
