One thing i forgot to mention in the video. we actually used a machine at Today Ticket's corner to buy the Narita Express ticket for the next morning, and it worked. no problem at all. so it's confusing but it seems that the Today Ticket's machines also sell tickets for other days too!

Just a question, do you have grab or Uber there aside from taxi? Do you think hiring a car for 2 weeks is cheaper than catching train or keep using taxi like for example from one city to another? I haven’t seen any blog where tourists are catching taxi as their means of transportation, is that really expensive?thank you..

The system with the ticket reservation machines works quite well! There are some issues when you change your mind and decide to take an earlier or later train. When you want to make a new reservation for the journey between the same stations, the systems knows you've already booked a seat on that segment and it doesn't let you book a train. You must go to the staffed ticket counter to change your reservation.

I had this issue twice when I was there in April and June so I went to a small JR station early in the morning to deal with it. (I even tried to rebook a much later train that was not an overlapping train but the machine still did not let me, very frustrating.)

I don't understand it. They have one of the most efficient train networks in the world, and yet so behind when it comes to the booking system.Why is there no online booking system? Why do we need to get a physical ticket? Why can't we get QR codes instead? Why does my JR pass need to be a physical paper (and risk losing it)? It seems like some parts of their society is futuristic and efficient, then other parts are stuck in the 1990s.

@@ONEGOODDREAM I was going to ask, if it’s not too much trouble; I have a 5 year old, I know he can travel free on the rail system but I can’t reserve a seat on Shinkansen for him as he won’t have a pass, I know I can buy a separate ‘child’ ticket, but I plan on travelling enough that the separate Shinkansen tickets would cost more that a child JR Pass. My question is, can I buy him a JR pass even though he’s only 5, to use for Shinkansen reservations only? Or is that not allowed? Thanks so much

@@epsilona7472 unfortunately that it not possible. if you want him to sit on a separate seat with you, you can use the non-reserved seats, instead of the reserved ones, (it's first come first serve) or you can buy a separate kid ticket for half the price of adult's one.

Thank you so much for this information. Just returned from Japan. Wanted to mention that if you have the JR Pass and go to the JR ticket office to get your ticket you also must have your passport(s). If you are getting tickets for others in your group make sure they do not wander away without giving you their passports. The lines were very long so getting your tickets from the ticket machines is the way to go.

Thank you so much!🙏 I'm not sure what you mean by "a clip", but as long as the pass period is still valid, your jr pass still works. if there's any issue, just use the manned gate and show the pass to the staff there.

It was very helpful since I've watched many videos and most didn't specify the main task of using the gate. There are some other videos that also indicate to use both the ticket and rail pass, or just the printed ticket. So to get through the gate for Shinkansen after making reservation, you insert just the JR Pass? I don't want to draw attention to myself or the fact that I'm using a pass specifically for tourists. The least amount of human interaction the better😅

Hi, thank you so much! 🙏 yeah, you insert just the JR Pass at the ticket gates to get through (cuz the pass is a ticket itself) and the tickets printed out at the machines that have the seat number, those are only for you to know where you can sit on the train. that's why if you use a non-reserved seat on a Shinkansen, you don't need any extra ticket, just insert the JR pass at the gate, get on the Shinkansen, and sit in one of the non-reserved cars :)

sure thing! you can reserve a seat at any JR office throughout Japan anytime convenient for you. if by any chance you miss your Shinkansen, just hop on the next one and sit in the non-reserved seats. that's the benefit of the jr pass^^

I do have a question: how far in advance can I reserve my seats at the machines? As soon as I get my JRPass can I make all the reservations at the machine for the time that its good for (I'll get de 14 day pass)? hi, thank you so much!🙏 yes, as soon as you get your jr pass, you can make all the reservations for your whole trip right away, especially the train back to the airport when you leave. worst case scenario, if you miss the bullet train you reserved, just get one the next one and use a non-reserved seat.

My wife and I were in Japan in April and June/July and I reserved and printed all my tickets for about 12 days out all at once but I did it early inn morning at a JR station when there was no crowd. Two drawbacks are that you have to scan the pass and enter your passport #(s) over and over and once the tickets are printed out, you cannot cancel/undo. You have go into a JR office to do which is a pain.

Hi. great video, but still I have a question! If I want to travel from Tokyo to Hiroshima, I have to change the train at Shin Osaka. When I apply for a ticket reservation in Tokyo, should I apply for 2 trains? I should type Hiroshima as the destination or should I apply for shin osaka as the destination and then another train from Shin Osaka to Hiroshima?

Thank you so much!🙏 there's direct shinkansen to Hiroshima. if you want to get on the direct train, you should type Hiroshima as destination. if for some reason you want to get off at Shin Osaka, you need to type Shin Osaka as destination, and reserve another train from Shin Osaka to Hiroshima.

thank you so much!🙏 glad you found it helpful! yes, with the jr pass, you can just get on the bullet trains (that are covered by the jr pass) without booking, if you use a non-reserved seat. the booking is only needed when you want to secure a reserved seat. hope this helps..

sometimes it's difficult to book the oversized luggage seats. in your case, you can use the overhead rack and also use the small luggage storage area instead of the oversized luggage seat.

thank you so much for watching! even if you buy online, you still need to exchange for the actual pass after you arrive in japan. i think for online, you will receive the exchange order via email, instead of via post.

Keep in mind that even if you bought it via the official JR website, you still have to get in line like everyone else to pick up your physical pass. There is no separate express line. This is so important to know but KZbinrs fail to mention this.
