As someone who lived 3 years of hikikomori (not even in Japan), I feel for these people. I will always look at my past experiences in a positive light. And I think that all hikikomori have been let down by society in one way or another. The hikikomori lifestyle is rooted in a great disillusionment with society.

Sad, but true people create false narratives. Yet there is a lot of people in the world lonely . I just heard yesterday 3 out of 5 are lonely here in the states , myself included. I've become antisocial 2 a certain extent. I sit, & observe, somethings are absurd .

I was basically hikikamori in my country Jamaica from the age of 18 to 24...and from 27 to 33. I'm not awkward or anything, tall and I guess good looking. I went to school part time and tried very hard to get a job (I eked out a very modest living working online) and a few times approached women trying to get a gf during that first duration. I wasn't a shut in, tho I spent a lot of times indoors. It was simply that I was ignored by society. Absolutely no-one acknowledged my existence for 6 years straight. Its a cold cruel world when you don't have family connections, or prolonged exposure to people that lets them get used to you (the environment of a workplace or full time school)

capitalism isolates and alinates people, there is no communal groupings, work places and schools are purely a hierarchical structures meant for performing tasks for other people stressing yourself out and going home to either more stress or isolation. our social and economic order is responsible in a lot of ways

Getting a little sick of zoomers trying to inject their 'weekend commie' propaganda into everything. These people aren't lonely because they don't get to go to a barn dance after the state takes 80% of their monthly produced goods and income. Feeling lonely and isolated has nothing to do with what economic system you're living in.

To anyone who wants to fix loneliness, please get out the house. Ask Complete strangers to do stuff youre interested. The hard part is conversation. Intelligent people dont share because they analyze everything and nothing gets shared and no conversation is made. Force yourself to share Complete details about yourself and invite complete stragers to do stuff. Take people's number down and just invite them. Doing these to may seem stupid but human connection really heals, so just trust and do it.

Believe it or not, after living in Japan for a while I think the main reason of loneliness is because of Keigo / Hone & Tatemae / Meiwaku Kakeru which means it’s mainly caused by Japanese culture. Japanese people are making their own lives miserable by their own culture. You might not feel it as a short term visitor, if you live here alone long enough you will understand what I mean
Japan: How do we get more people married and having sex? Gay People: Exist. Japan: THEY DON'T EXIST. HERE. GET MARRIED TO THE OPPOSITE SEX ALREADY. THERE. GOD. Now... back to solving this original problem.
