I am an American and I have lived in Japan for over 23 years. Many of the "harmony" things you talk about I just call "Zen" but I practice them in every part of my live. When driving, I used to be an aggressive driver but thanks to the Japanese culture, I have learned how to be a better, non aggressive driver and actually enjoy the ride. The same can be said about my job. I have distanced myself from "friends" who just want to be negative and try to stay positive and smile most of the time. There is a downside to this though. When I travel back to the states, my family still want to argue a debate politics and when I don't argue back, they actually get frustrated with me and become angry. I think they should adopt the "Keep Harmony" lifestyle. The world would definitely be a much better place!

There is nothing wrong with healthy political discussion. People can’t avoid conflict everywhere all the time and as long as it is peaceful it’s fine

So you rather text a book on youtube than talk to your family. The point of just being at peace is you can disagree while being perfectly content with the outcome, whatever the outcome. You cant control other people’s emotions. So no point in dwelling in it. Especially if you laid out your thoughts respectfully.

But i think, one of the weaknesses of Japanese, is their passiv behaviour. Why they also have a lot of problems. I agree that harmony is important. But it is also important to talk about important stuff, which concerns us all, Politics for example. Of course, this should be in a peacefull way, where everyone can say his opinion whitout being hatet for it.

I remember my first time in Japan as a tourist (been born and raised in Mexico), I knew some things in advance but every hour I spent in Japan was filled with things that really surprised me, things that I never expected a society could achieve (super clean streets, excellent service at stores, polite people, perfect transportation, ease of access for disabled people, friendliness towards tourists and the list goes infinitely on). Thanks Mrs. eats for going beyond and sharing all of this with the rest of the word.

I agree with the harmony 100% just as long as it doesnt turn into no one being able to say what they truly want to, just to avoid issues or arguements which is something that ' s not good because people have to be honest with eachother and sometimes feelings gotta be hurt, even to help in some situations where someone might need to just have a reality check. I do love Japan and the language but I'm really sorry that I could not live in a place where you don't know if people are being honest with you... That's my opinion but I love you and your husband all those great content creators that entertain us everyday with brilliant content😊

I'm the type of person that loves brutal honesty and constructive criticism. The truth shall set you free. You also don't always have to agree on everything, you can politely disagree. It's all about having emotional maturity. However, I think what they are referring to here is there is a time and place for everything. Having a debate about politics or abortion is probably not the best idea during a family function. Combine it with alcohol and all hell breaks loose haha.

The last thing was important, how i find. It's easy for people to say(and often time judge) do just this and this and everything gets better. But when your'e mind is not in the right state, eg. depression and stuff, it's really hard. And this is the point where it's important that you can ask for help. Real help.

0:54 in Indian cuisine too (mostly only in restaurants nowadays) you can get what is called a _thaali_ (lit. means 'plate), which is a large plate with bread, rice, and multiple main dishes served in tiny little bowls (think of the size of an espresso mug). When i was about 14-15, there was a restaurant that would have like 15-20 different dishes on a buffet-style table; i would always want to taste all of them; but when i went to get a second round, i would always be amazed at how full i had already gotten from just 'sampling' the food...

All this is true! (I love you two, by the way.) I've been in Japan 13 days. I walk a LOT in the US. I walk more here! And triangle eating plus soup, usually miso soup, means I am lightly satisfied quicker. I've lost an inch or more around my waist in less than 2 weeks. In the US, I eat as I drive ... a LOT. My "triangle" is cheeseburger, french fries, diet Coke. What Im doing here FEELS better and IS better.

I think keeping harmony and avoiding disagreements is important, but a lot of understanding can come from disagreements once they're resolved. Also, I think somewhere like Japan it's easier to have a lot of people agree culturally when a large majority of the population comes from that same cultural upbringing. We have so many disagreements in the US because we have so many cultural differences here. At the same time, a lot of people can understand different cultures when they live in the same areas together. Even if we might be different, and we might not agree on things, I can still respect and understand your position, and hopefully the feeling is reciprocated. But, if we never have those conversations, it might never happen, you know?

What''s really impressive is how walking-friendly Japan is. In my country, for example (somewhere in South America that's mainly known for beauty pageant queens and other negative things), only in parks you can walk easily. From what I've seen of Japan (not only Tokyo), the roads and streets are quite comfortable to walk in without the fear of a motorbike/car running you over, or that you might not find a walking path. The one city in my continent I can think of that is as walkable is Buenos Aires, I enjoyed my walks there (and Madrid in Europe) I work from home, but if I lived in a place like Japan, damn would I walk my butt off with gusto.

Thank you for sharing! These videos are always so uplifting! This may sound a little weird, but some Japanese advice that has really helped me was about cleaning the toilet. I have OCD and anxiety, so I used to stress out over cleaning the toilet because it’s gross and not fun (germs 😓) But then I saw a Japanese video about cleaning that said if you can change the (negative) way you think about cleaning your toilet and turn it into something positive, it can make you a hard, successful worker. It totally changed my perspective and now I don’t dread this simple chore- in fact, I’ve gotten really good at it! But I had to work on it a little bit every day. I can’t wait to add the positive lessons from this video into my life! We definitely need more harmony in the U.S. right now, so I will be the change I want to see in the world! ありがとございます ❤ じゃまたね

This is really great advice for people outside of Japan to have a better life. Better eating, positive thinking, conflict avoidance for better relationships. That being said, none of us are perfect. Neither on an individual basis nor as a country. Is there a time and place in Japan where the imperfections can be discussed ? If so, I'm sure it's being done respectfully. If not, I'm concerned that problems are simply being swept under the proverbial rug. I can truly testify to the respect in Japanese culture from what I experienced during my travels to the country. Both towards things that everyone uses, and towards each other.

I'm one that subscribes to the idea that words are vibrations, and as such they reverberate and influence other things and people vibrating nearby. But that said, words in and of themselves have no meaning. I can turn to you and say "massa!", and it will strike no chords in you. You have to be taught what it is supposed to mean, then you will rebuild the memory whenever you hear the word. The word has power when you're able to reconstruct its meaning in your mind and heart. That said, it's useless to hold in "bad" words and fabricate dishonest "good" words, that's just blowing empty wind. The true source of vibration is in your mind, so you have to address that's throwing it off balance, instead of trying to brainwash yourself out of your mood. No amount of "I am happy" will fix someone who's depressed, and refraining from expressing one's pain will only make it worse, as pain and suffering tends to ferment in the mind. Kotodama is useful for setting intentions. It doesn't solve problems. Ah, Harmony. I sincerely think it's a beautiful concept in theory, but a disaster in practice. It breeds cowardice and avoidant behaviour. It breeds disasters such as the Johnny Kitagawa serial sexual abuse of boys, in which no one intervened, even when law demanded so, for the sake of ✨ harmony,✨, and just let the case die until western media and a brazilian talent decided to stand up. Even the journalist from the BBC was flabbergasted at japanese people's indifference and avoidance, as it's a "disharmonious subject" to talk about. I personally found it to be of inhumane coldness to turn one's back to the suffering of kids who couldn't defend themselves because first and foremost is ✨harmony✨. It breeds black companies, labor abuses, moral abuses, It breeds increasing child abuse, it breeds increase in tachimbos in kabukicho and elsewhere, it breeds people walking into train lines seeking for some respite for having nothing they could count on. So much for a society that proudly proclaims mindfulness and respect for others. Well, definitely not their human rights, nor their struggles. Have a cardiac arrest in the middle of shibuya cross, and be sure that far from being helped, as you're an egoistic asshole that breaks everyone's ✨harmony✨ by becoming an unexpected hurdle when they're busy, no less, they will criticize you, perhaps even say you deserve to just pass away to make the world a better place. Just like "human accidents" of people jumping in front of trains are seen but an egoistic act of the desperate, who dares breaking the ✨ harmony ✨ of the living, causing them to be late to their errands. People are unable to give their seats to disabled, even if they have that unnecessary tag stating their condition for all to see. And upon criticism, the japanese say it's the disabled man that should personally ask for someone to give up their seat. ✨Harmony✨ prevents the japanese from standing out and disrupting what's comunnally comfortable, and I sincerely see no nobility about avoiding discomfort. My understanding of true harmony, true nobility, is dealing with discomfort, pain, even violence, with the grace of an aikido master, that strives for a spaciousness of heart that isn't tainted by external negativity, and that is even grateful for it, as they pave the way for one's growth. I do think people should be able to deal with life, as it really is, because that's where we are, with an open spirit, not a reactive one, and change adversity into opportunity, instead of clamming up at the slight break in routine. Hiding up conflict under the rug because it feels bad to deal with it won't make it go away. I see true respect from people that are upfront to show their weapons and stand as equals. There's no honor in cowards that put on smiley masks hiding their knives behind their backs because of ✨harmony✨.

However, after living in Japan, I would like to say that their (sorry) obsession with harmony also has its downsides. The famous Japanese meltdowns can occur after essentially accumulating negative feelings and not expressing them at all. Even some Japanese people I met preferred the “Western” way and a more direct approach to issues.

Any idea can be taken to too much extreme. Bottling everything up forever is bad, especially when something has gone wrong in a relationship and someone is hurting you and the only way to address it is to speak up about it, but it's also maybe not the best idea to just start an argument at dinner over politics while everyone is trying to eat and enjoy their meal. There's a time and place for everything, and I think a lot of people just never learn that, and either do too much (Americans) or too little (Japanese). Healthy communication can be hard wherever you are from.

The problem with "keep the harmony" is that very often it becomes "keep the status quo". Western countries (sometimes only specific ones) are the best place in the world for Women's right, Queer rights, Non-native rights, Workers rights, Animals rights, and many more, because people didn't keep the harmony they stood up and demanded better rights.

Interestingly enough, in the cyberworld Japanese tend to be rude maybe because it's a way to loose steam and it's anonymous. This is not my personal opinion but the opinion of Japanese KZbinrs like Nobita San, Yuta San and Meshida San.

I urge all American guys who live alone to sit down when you pee. I swear that makes cleaning the bathroom a lot less gross.

I agree with all the topics except avoiding controversial topics. It's our national sport in France hahaha. You can disagree with the other person as long as you think his opinions are legitimate.

By far the biggest impact to a country's health metrics (like lifespan, infant mortality, etc.) is the country's wealth and how well it's distributed. Pre WW2 Japan's health metrics were similar to it's regional peers like China, only drastically improving during it's post WW2 economic boom. Currently on things like life expectancy; Japan is a only marginally ahead of other (USA excluded) developed countries and that is with several times less obesity (JPN's rate is

Who eats first the chicken, then the salad, then...??? I mean there are those people who believe that this helps you slim down (because it makes a boring meal), but those aside? Personally, if it's possible, I lilke to mix everything together. As for the 80% thing I once heard a nice description in a German documentary: You don't eat until you are full, you eat until you are satisfied.

Lots of great tips here for sure. I think the harmony part has a dark side though. Harmony is great if you’re someone who fits in, but if you’re someone who is considered disharmonious because your existence doesn’t comport with what the majority, then it’s not such a great philosophy for you. I think there’s a reason that the LGBT community is in a worse place in Japan.

Of course not! It is something the damn government is doing!!! If you have so many people who believe that everything a group (other than their own group) is doing is bad, then you can't get appreciation or pride.

If you want "more harmony" with other person just to keep that friendship, then you are exploiting that friendship. "more harmony" means less sincerity. I want the opposite. If someone can't handle the truth, find someone else sooner then after 10 years of some relationship (of any kind). Other people thoughts, ideas, believes.... do not bothers me at all, we can talk and discuss, but the only thing i hate is insincerity and just because time is wasted. It is not about "more harmony" but more understanding and accepting differences. Americans are not very open into discussions, but come to Europe to experience art of arguing about everything (mediteranean countries).
