It was amazing how the commentators kept saying "the Russians are exhausted" starting soon after the kick off. Yet their line speed didn't diminish. In any event the Brave Blossoms are a grade higher and I find them a joy to watch. I love the Russian National Anthem.

Can't imagine a better ref for this game than Owens. He made allowances for the inexperience and nerves of both teams and let just enough go to keep the game flowing whilst making sure both teams knew they were playing in the big league. His explanations on every decision made sure everyone on the field knew what was going on.

ロシアの対戦相手はアイルランド、スコットランド、サモア、そして日本の4つ。この中で、アイルランドとスコットランドに勝つのは世界ランク的にも実力的にも難しい。W杯開幕時の世界ランクはロシアが20位でサモアが16位、日本が10位。世界ランクが近いのはサモアだが、サモア代表の選手は普段は欧州の強豪チームに在籍していて、W杯の時だけ母国に戻ってナショナルチームを編成するため、普段のサモア代表よりも強い。そして何より、男子15人制でロシアとサモアは一度も対戦したことがない。しかも、サモア戦はこの日本との開幕戦から中3日(しかもサモアにとっては初戦)という厳しい日程と不利な条件。となると、ロシアが勝てる可能性のある相手は日本だけになる。しかもロシアは過去に1度秩父宮で日本を破っている。これらの条件を知れば、ロシアの開始4分のトライや、試合全体を通じてのアグレッシブなアティチュードがいかにこの影響を受けているのかがお分かりいただけるだろう。
