When I want to know basic foreign recipes, I refer to videos of people who have just started living alone and are not good at cooking, rather than recipes by cooking geeks.
Because recipes from people who like cooking have their own twists, and are often not the basic recipes I want to know...but they often introduce their version as the standard...
I wanted to show the very basic curry that all Japanese imagine when we hear the word "School Curry" in this video.
I can't eat curry any more! I had over 30 servings of curry to make this video...
This recipe was created by referring to various school recipes, school lunch recipes, and my memory. (I actually tried many of them and compared...)
There are slight variations from school to school though, I eliminated all twists and finished it with a standard taste.
In most public school, we practice cooking curry, potato stew, miso soup, omelet, hamburger steak, pancake, etc, so basically all Japanese can cook these.
(If they haven't forgotten what they learned in school)
When I tell that to foreigners, they are all surprised.
School curry is a memorable taste for Japanese.
Home-cooked versions are based on this, with each family's arrangement added.
Wine, tomato puree, Worcestershire sauce, apples, chocolate, soy sauce, etc are often added as hidden flavors, but that's for next time.

Very nice! Store bought roux cubes usually taste pretty good but are often made with palm oil which I try to avoid because of its environmental impact. When I went to grade 8 in Canada, we took a class called "Home Economics" which was things like sewing buttons and cooking. My friends and I tried to make a lemon pie and we thought it would be nice to add extra lemon. It came out sooo sour, I can still remember my teacher's face pucker up when she tried it, haha.

Hahaha, I still make that failure. "Just a little more lemon!" Yes, palm oil is a problem...it is in everything...especially in "Vegan products" in Japan...instead of animal fats... It is one of the reasons why I usually don't buy much processed food...

30 servings of curry!? 😆 Time for a curry break. At school it was pretty basic for us, they probably don't even allow knives anymore. Many angry people here. I was curious about Japanese curry a while ago and tried the S&B golden curry. I was surprised by how mild and sweet it was.

Angry people?! I'm curious about cooking classes that don't use knives... S&B curry roux? You tried that 1kg block? Wow! You are brave to try a 1kg block for the first time.

@@ajapaneseveganskitchench First "cooking" classes was in year 1. It was for everyone and we all ate sandwiches. Everything placed in the middle of the table and we all made sandwiches. We even used metal knives. I changed school to a different state in year 3. It was quite a different area. I remember one day in year 7/8 a boy pulled a knife out of his bag and showed it off. I remember thinking he must've have been a simple person. It was a butter knife, I told him I remembered learning about them in year 1... There wasn't any cooking until maybe year 8/9. I don't remember too much about it. I'm pretty sure everything was pre measured and given to us. So it was basically mixing and cooking. All I remember was making scones, flour, butter, salt, baking powder I think. It was very very simple. The best day I remember was the last class when we all could make whatever we wanted. We then got to choose 3 other people whose food we would get to try. I can't remember what I made... But I do remember a dish I got to try. It was sausage shaped, leaf wrapped things cooked in a tomato sauce. I can't remember where she was from or her name, but it was a really tasty dish. Maybe middle eastern? We may have had knives in the cooking class but I don't remember using them. It was also a partly joke if they have knives now or not. I would not be surprised if they aren't allowed, or chained to the table. I think there has been a media push on Australians being "laid back" in my experience, it's not so true.

@@hubtubby There have also been incidents involving knives in Japanese schools. I don't know the schools of now, cooking classes may be held without knives...

it looks very yummy and easy to make if school kids can do it :p how interesting to teach cooking in school, what other dishes did you learn? I love teaching kids how to take care of themselves, with well rounded studies!

We learned all the basics! Rice balls, miso soup, egg salad sandwich, omelette, potato stew, pilaf, pancake, flan, etc... Nutrition calculation was especially memorable. It is to record the meals at home for 3 days and calculate the nutritional value. My mother hated it. Hahaha.

What would you recommend using instead of meat?

As I showed in the video, I don't add anything. You can add veg meat, mushrooms, or anything you like. If you want to add inosinic acid, MSG is the only vegan way to add it.
