In my opinion it sounds so cringy.... But I can't deny, that a lot of non-german people I know actually really like the german accent. But as long as people understand what you are saying, it shouldn't bother you :) Having an accent is just that individual touch that makes you you :D Be proud of it, even if you don't like how it sounds :)

I can sort of understand. I'm from a southern state and I hate the stereotypical southern accent so much (people over exaggerate it so much it just makes us sound like we're dumb) that I've grown to hate real southern accents as well, as it really does sound less intelligent to me. Though real southern accents sound nowhere near as dumb as the ones you hear faked on TV, they're still bad imo. I will intentionally and consciously slow down my speech and almost over enunciate to try to lose any trace of an accent. Imo my southern accent is light, but the first few times someone "complimented" it by saying something like "I like your accent" or saying it sounded "country" I was so upset. Upset as in sad or disappointed, not like angry. They meant it as a compliment, and I appreciated it, but it was hard to swallow and only made me more self conscious about how I sound, to the point that there are certain words I'll avoid saying altogether now (like "talk") because I can't say them "normally".
@VonCarlsson
@VonCarlsson 11 ай бұрын
@@NuniPikachu That's exactly it. I don't think most English native speakers realize just how much time and effort a lot of us non-natives put in into not sounding like *insert national stereotype here*. Don't get me wrong, I do appreciate it when someone compliments something I do. But when I've tried my darnedest for years NOT to sound like the Swedish chef, then someone saying they like my accent is really far down on the bottom of the list of things I want to hear.

Tbh i always thought its just an accent difference. My mom speaks good English, but she retains her Filipino accent. As long as you understand one another is all that matters right? Cultural difference is a different story.

To me the accent is the least important part when learning a language for communication. But if you want to sount native, you'll have to practice it. But some people's accents can be so strong that you won't understand anything. Indian people often have a very thick accent. But then again, different regions of a country has different dialects. English people from different regions can have a hard time understanding each other.

I agree, it's just that a lot of Japanese people have this complex where they think: Japanese accent = incorrect pronunciation. And since there's such a perfectionist culture over here, they end up being super ashamed of the way they speak. (I used to teach English in Japan.)
@Gab8riel
@Gab8riel 9 ай бұрын
The thing is, it's impossible to draw the line between what counts as mispronounciation and a different accent. Usually it's a matter of intelligibility, for example, I can't tell the difference between bed and bad, but that has never made me harder to understand because context always makes it clear. But, I have pronounced words in a such a way in the past where it took a while for the other person to understand what I was trying to say. Every time that happens I try to improve my pronounciation so it gets closer to how a native sounds. It doesn't need to be perfect, but close enough is important.

Well, no. We are human beings. We have perceptions, and experiences. You'll have better or worse experiences with speakers of a language based on how you speak it. To some, speaking properly makes you sound obnoxiously affluent, stuck-up, and they'll hate you for it. If you speak in mostly slang and your accent is made up of heavy slurring, then others may assume you to be a criminal. And we all know not everyone likes foreigners. Sounding like one, then, would net you mixed results. It is not enough to be understood. You need to meet the expectations of the person you are speaking with if you want an optimal result. If simply being understood was all that mattered, then you'd likely see all 3 of this categories of speakers mixing regularly. That, however, is clearly not the case in reality.

My mother came to the U.K. at 21 and she never lost her accent. She first settled in Glasgow so did say some words in a glaswegian accent. She never really mastered the ‘w’ and always said, “Vindows”, instead of windows. Strangely she maintained the German ‘ mit’ instead of saying ‘with’. I never noticed her accent except on the phone, when she would sound very German.

Lmao this is true, for us here, we have our own accent and slangs, we use improper grammar, and we might also mix in with other language/languages when we speak. For example : Normal : Have you eaten? Here : You eat already? Normal : Can I “take away” the fried rice? Here : Eh can tapao the fried rice ah? Here’s some swearing : “YOU LANJIAO JIBAI BODOH-“ And we also like to use Aiya for sigh, eh is like a question thing, waaa or wah (same thing ) is wow, and-o, sometimes ah we end our sentence with ah, like, He wake up already-ah? Which means has he waken up yet? We also use the word also and already a lot, a whole lot. You can guess which region this english from-ah?

Late to this party, but the video is really funny. I was very lucky my first job was as a dishwasher in a Chinese restaurant. The owner spoke okay English, but her husband was mostly pointing, one or two words of English, and mostly Chinese. As a result, I gained an ear for broken English and heavily accented English, like engrishu. I also learned to meter myself so that they could understand me at about their level. This was invaluable when I visited Japan and conversations were 50/50 English and Japanese.

So... I'm brazillian and I have a few japanese friends who often comes to visit their relatives in my city. It's... interesting to hear them trying to speak Portuguese (pt-br) mixed with English and Japanese. I don't speak japanese very much... but there are times that I understand them better when they speak in full japanese rather than... whatever they are trying to speak at times.
