they do have guns, however, because guns bring so much extra scrutiny and are very expensive to smuggle in, they save the guns for when they want to make a statement. The Yakuza wars in the 90s and 2000s saw lots of shootings between high level yakuza members. Because of how much risk there is in using guns, the act of shooting someone with a gun in Japan is seen as a very bold statement

Most manufactured firearms in Yakuza are for export. Basically being shipped to arms dealers or their clients via smuggling. What they do typically have, are either zip guns or certain modified air guns and replicas. Yakuza henchmen, the ones you can spot roaming the streets of red districts, only carry concealable silent weapons. Knives, brass knuckles, tazers, and honestly they rarely even use it as they're pretty much all very intimidating in the first place and know how to absolutely destroy an annoyance bare-handed. Guns would bring too much attention in a country with one of the most strict gun control in the world. Now sure, Aniki's and higher ups can own a handgun, but rarely do you see them actually ever using those: ammunition is scarce, more expensive than simply buying a kitchen knife and buying too much will definitely get attention.

Let me explain whats going on here; This is an episode hosted by retired Japanese-American MMA fighter, Enson Inoue who has close ties to many Japanese gangs in Japan including Yakuza. Kitakyushu is a unique place in Japan sinde it has a deep gang history and culture. The gangs he is referring to are "hangure" which are non-yakuza Japanese gangs which never carry guns but often get into fights with other gangs. Yakuza gangs often have guns stored at safe houses and somtimes their residences but are almost never carried and only picked up when they need to slide on an opp. Carrying a gun is an offence that will land you in prison for around 5-10 years. So to saying there are no guns in Japan is misleading as there are about a dozen shootings every year and at least 200,000 legally registered guns by private citizens.

Ah, difference between gang and organized crime. Gang as in a local group of kids who like to play tough on the block, organized crime is old men telling young men to cut their pinkies off for the crime of not having enough money because they failed to push enough product and accidentally killed a civvie. Speaking from personal experience, getting an (illegal) firearm in Japan is actually pretty easy, it’s just that the penalties for getting caught with it are so huge that most criminals don’t consider it worth the extra risk. Disclaimer: I never owned a gun, but I know people in Japan who do, and they would have sold me one if I wanted them to.
@riffgroove10 ай бұрын
The process of getting one there is also extremely complicated as well. There are multiple exams you have to pass, amd there are extensive background checks. They even interview your family and friends before you're allowed to legally own one. But you are correct. Simply carrying a gun in public in Japan will net you a hefty prison-term. Fun fact... the U.S. had over 48,000 gun deaths in 2023. Japan had 6. Only 4 of them were homicides. And two of those 4 were gang members.
@connorperrett955910 ай бұрын
@@riffgrooveWow, a small, aging, homogenous island nation populated by Japanese people where it is nearly possible to acquire a firearm had less firearm deaths than a gargantuan, ethnically diverse country that has a totally open border with a nation that is in a constant state of low level war? @connorperrett9559 You forgot "gargantuan, ethnically diverse nation with nearly limitless supply of firearms." You left that out. U.S. gun deaths in 2023 - 48,000 Japan gun deaths in 2023 - 6 Try to spin it however you like, those numbers cannot be argued with.

These guys probably aren't Yakuza but rather some small semi-organized gang. The Japanese police has been cracking down hard on the Yakuza these last few years, which you would imagine is good but it actually isn't. In their golden days the Yakuza kept the youth in check and kept foreign gangs from rising to significant power, but now that being apart of the Yakuza has become so difficult Japan is seeing an influx in mostly foreign gangs, usually made up of Chinese, Korean, Indian, and Pakistani, of course small Japanese gangs have also formed but the foreigners are the bigger issue. The Yakuza have always been a necessary evil as they are much less violent than their foreign counterparts, not to mention that most Yakuza clans forbid the production and selling of illegal drugs, which is what the foreign gangs mostly use to gain money and power.

@josephsheranda11 ай бұрын
@@bilalbaig8586Joining yakuza is becoming harder because they're getting harder to find. I watched a yakuza documentary during covid lockdown and the statistic given was that yakuza had declined from 100,000 post-WWII to around 30,000 by 2010. The last time the yakuza publicly recruited was right after the Fukushima disaster when the various clans were providing humanitarian aid. When criminals start recruiting like they're the good guys you know that's a sign of desperation.
