I think it's totally fine if you are physically attracted to certain ethnicities. That's not something you can control anyway. It's when you start attributing certain qualities to particular ethnicities it is problematic: just because you belong to XX ethnicity, you must be this way. It's annoying when people say, 'Oh, I thought you would be XXX because you are from XXX.'

+MeebleMeeble I'm not sure why Asians need to be so strongly represented in western media considering they have mother nations that control their own media. American Blacks don't have a home country that have their best interest in mind. They're working on it though. I mean, why should a Japanese American complain about representation when the home country he came from cranks out movies without permission from hollywood. It's not *that* bad for them.
@dexterwilliams42898 жыл бұрын
+MeebleMeeble lol no. Just having trouble understanding why it's a priority when your mother country (the country your mother came from) has a strong economy that you can take advantage of. I`m a white woman living in Japan and dating a Japanese man. Both of us have never dated someone from each other`s races before and while we have the occasional culture shock moments (I buy groceries once a week, he gives the silent treatment when he`s annoyed), things are going really well. Our families were a bit awkward at times when they met us, but fortunately we were both warmly welcomed too! However, both of us have dealt with weird, culturally insensitive comments from people before. People have asked me about his parts (which is NOT okay) and people have implied he is dating me to improve his English. We`ve stayed strong through it though!

+Figgy5119 they think western girls are more into the outspoken kind of guy than in the east, where they are more shy and reserved. Besides, Hollywood contributes to this stereotype, so its hard to think the other way unless they regularly meet non japanese girls.

I think some of the things they said about Japanese guys compared to Western guys are odd maybe they think Western guys are cooler but I think a lot of Japanese guys dress really fashionable and look cool. Maybe the problem is Japanese culture is not used to being assertive compared to how Western culture is. Guys getting with a girl just seems to be a long process in Japan while a foreigner might push for a girl and pursue her and some Japanese female friends I have say it's appealing because it's romantic for them to put a lot of effort into trying to go out with them. Western guys will say what they think,ply them with flowers and gifts and really go after them. Japanese guys are often very shy so maybe it's an appeal with Western guys.
@AngelaEAwesome8 жыл бұрын
+MxMoondoggie if the guy (any type) is assertive it is usually a bad sign. I mean he doesn't really view the woman as a human and doesn't care to feel nervous or shy.
@MxMoondoggie8 жыл бұрын
+Astro Cyte Or it just means he isn't afraid of her saying "no". Fear of rejection is the largest cause for guys to feel nervous or shy. Being willing to make an effort for what you want instead of constantly beating around the bush does not make you a bad person.

+MxMoondoggie Some of Yuta videos help demonstrate this - see his Why Japanese Don't Date video for instance, where some of the women interviewed complain of not being sought by Japanese men. Some of the men in the video answered that they don't try through shyness.

Yeah I agree. I think the more dominating opinion is that muscular guys who kinda take charge is the popular male type (at least here in the west) and that because Asian men are not always like this then they are less popular with women. But I (as a non Asian person) don't see it that way. It's just hard to grasp when you're either not Asian in an Asian country or not a Asian male vying for a females attention or not make just in general

Yuta, I feel like I'm in a weird situation. I'm half Japanese (my mother is full), but I don't really look like it much (aside from dark hair/eyes). It's not so much that I think all Japanese people are a certain way, but that (especially since I grew up being taught like this) I tend to prefer Japanese men because in general they have been brought up with Japanese societal morals/values and this goes well with mine. Our values mesh well and are similar (in many cases, from my own experiences). I am also uncomfortable with the aggressiveness many (not all!) western men tend to show. Does that make sense?
@ThatJapaneseManYuta8 жыл бұрын
+Athena Seru Yeah, that sounds pretty normal to me. I think most people prefer someone from their own culture.

That Japanese Man Yuta That's very true. I just get confused, because aside from morals/values and Shinto, I'm very "western". I look very "white", my first language was English, I grew up in Canada, have my father's last name, etc. Is that still okay do you think? (^_^)a
@coffeecoffee63528 жыл бұрын
it's still okay, i don't know why you're asking, there is nothing wrong or not okay with it as everyone has their own preferences whether it's their culture or not c: if you feel you can relate well too there is nothing wrong with it. I mean for me though, i'm extremely open-minded and to be honest i'd have to say that something from each culture appeals to me in some way, but as of my own culture (Australian, i mean VERY Australian) nothing special appeals to me besides the fact we are open-minded and incredibly friendly, even the worst of us (No joke, i've made so many bad assumptions of people i've met but obviously i stayed around to see what they were like, but that might just be my own open-mindness if thats even a word) even the 'agressive' ones
@YoushouNoKioku8 жыл бұрын
+Athena Seru I am in a similar situation! I am a 1/4th Japanese. I was raised in the US, but I follow my heritage in a lot values. I grew up with people from other backgrounds making fun of me for being asian. So, I didn't like them as much. Now that I am grown up though, I see that it's more about personalities of the individual. Though, I do find asian features more attractive. That doesn't stop me from dating any race though. I am currently in a 3 year long relationship with probably the whitest guy ever lol but he is sweet and treats me well. I hope that anyone can just find someone nice regardless of race! :)

This has been a known thing in America for a long time, but most Asian women are pretty against it. I'm not all that surprised that Japanese people don't really understand it because they are the majority in their country.This term has quite a stigma to it. They don't see this happen as often as western countries like America. I do like the fact that they are open minded about many of these questions, but they're probably just unaware of how these topics are perceived in other countries.

I find this really interesting. I think the problems with a lot of the "this race of people are so attractive because X" is that it is often based on misconceptions or unfamiliarity. Since maybe because there aren't many white men or western men in general in Japan, maybe Japanese women think lots are like Chris Hemsworth or Brad Pitt, but in reality a lot of them are just average looking guys. I am from Australia and I have heard people say that Australian women are all attractive, but I know they don't mean me because they think of tanned, blonde surfer women and I am pale and brunette. So I think maybe Japanese girls go "oh western men seem pretty cool" from the media of western men, but if they meet some ordinary western men they might not automatically find them attractive. Maybe even be disappointed. That said I have met white men who have strange ideas about what Asian women act like and are like in general and I have met Asian women who have a fantasy idea of what white men are like. I think in reality humans aren't much different as far as attractiveness since being attractive is more rare than common anywhere you are.

+Claire Riri They say they concern themselves with small issues and that's a defect. But they definitely don't concern themselves with the same type of small issues western people do. Yes, you are right, it's just typical western habit of having very strong opinions and putting the negatives in front. If the level of sexlessness Japanese men face would be a thing in America, you'd see suicides epidemics, sky rocketing rape occurrences etc, these guys just have weird porn and carry on.
@KaotikBOOO8 жыл бұрын
+Claire Riri To be honnest even as a french I didn't understand the issue at first. But the other way arround is also true. Using the word "race" in France is really a big deal, at best there will be an awkward silence (given you're not attending at a rascist underground meeting of course) but on an American point of view it could look like a disproportionate reaction. I guess it's just a question of education, our sensibilities are not in the same spot and given that the difference between japanese culture and american is way bigger than the one between american and french, these sensibilities are probably even more different. Of course it's only my opinion, I don't claim to have the truth.
@OceanTree8 жыл бұрын
If you are asked about an issue you're not familiar with, I think it's normal for people, especially young ones to have a vague response to it. Japanese are raised in homogeneous environment so they don't really see what's the big deal about things like "Yellow Fever."

+BurmaChi I noticed that, too. I'm white, but a lot of my friends are Asian and have definitely had to deal with guys with yellow fever. It's really disgusting to know that you or the people you care about are being reduced to one characteristic, then being fetishised and expected to have a certain personality just because of the way they look. The guys in this video didn't seem to understand that at all, which is fair enough given the circumstances, but I doubt their answers would have been the same if they really understood the concept.

I've found East Asian women to be very physically attractive more so than others races or ethnicities. I don't think it's bad at all if you want to date an Asian person an African or European ect simply because there attractive. But ultimately you should be looking for a person with a personality for lack of a better word. regardless of race I'd say that comes first. +That Japanese Man Yuta, I probably got this wrong but: That wording they use for "race"(jin) and the notion of "racism"(Jin-shu), they do not feel as derogatory, hateful and dirty as they do in English, I like that. It just seems like they are saying "people" and "types of people" where we (retarded English users) go with the poorly coined terms: "race" and "races". I make this point all the time because we are "the human race" not the "human races", it is only that race that we are all a part of. No mater what variation OR supposed "race" you are taught to identify with, outside of just being the human race.

When I first started dating my boyfriend, I never considered his race as a deciding factor in deciding to date him, and vice versa. He was funny and laid back and shy (perhaps a product of his cultural upbringing but I like shy guys). I found a lot of guys in my home country and other 'westernised' countries as a little too aggressive in their approach for my liking, so i don't think Japanese guys should feel they are not as 'cool' as Western guys. I think there are plenty of people who will like you as you are! Don't change a thing guys! ^_^

The thing that bothers me about "yellow fever", is that it's always white guys liking Asian girls and Asian girls liking white guys. Well, what about us Asian guys? We get tossed aside by Asian girls. We become a side dish to main course. (Food analogy. Haha.) Yes, I know that there are other races of girls that like Asian guys, but, they're few and far in between.

+LeonSora I think it`s important to realize though that as Yuta said, Japanese people in Japan don`t really have to deal with direct racism. They just deal with some of the negative Hollywood stereotypes (hence the somewhat negative self-images of Japanese men). I find the videos really interesting, but it shouldn`t be viewed as a contradiction to the way that Japanese Americans feel about things. If you take the racist background out of the situation, it changes the way people feel about things. Different societies produce different viewpoints.

I feel like whenever I see videos like these that discuss topics that are negative to other collectives but not popular within the majority of Japan - even when explained as to why it's negatively painted - the Japanese (at least the people interviewed) mainly express more positive responses! Which I think is really awesome 👍🏽 Not that agree with stereotyping peeps or dating someone with that reasoning in mind. I just find their responses refreshing 🤗✨

I think that saying you only date Asians is not nearly as racist as saying you won't date outside of your race - however restricting yourself to a particular race in any way is racist. I personally do find some Asian guys really attractive, but i also like other races. People are people.

What I really like about the Japanese men that Yuta has interviewed is how open minded and at the same time critical they are and that seems to be a common trait in Japanese people. You can really see how they try to consider all points of view before coming to a conclusion and even then they are open to be proved wrong, they aren't belligerent in their opinion. I agree but I also think that it's fine for people to date specifically people who fit their standards. Even if it means they might end up single forever oh well. For me I've looked past what I want in appearance category, and dated them for personalities and I did love them but I wasn't sexually attracted to them then. I've learned that if you date someone who isn't sexually appealing (for me) then it just doesn't work out down the road because if I'm not sexually interested in them then I won't have sex and then they feel like they're unattractive or they just get mad because they want sex. 💁🏻 It's pretty complicated actually not as easy as it seems
@N3UR0M4NC3RRR8 жыл бұрын
+Maighdean Gemini That's the problem, people get caught up in both ends of the spectrum as if that's all there is. Why does it have to be either looks or personality? Life is about balance. I will say though that personality should be without a doubt more important than looks. There is no way somebody would stay with somebody longer and more genuinely for looks over personality. I'll tell you why. Because for people that place looks far ahead of personality, essentially meaning sex, well guess what's a hell of a lot easier to find and replace, a sex partner, not a true connection. That is why so many simple minded and shallow people out there can never truly find satisfaction because the pursuit of sex is an empty and never ending pursuit. It's like applying a bandage to a bloody stump instead of getting the required surgery which would be meeting somebody real and true. So often I find that people that are stuck in the empty pursuit of shallow and temporary emotions like the next great sex partner are also into other cheap and temporary emotions like drinking, partying and drugs. They're always chasing that next fleeting and temporary high. Essentially they try to fabricate happiness because they don't know how to find it truly or what it even is. People need to be more introspective and honest with themselves instead of choosing to just hide and run from life.

I think you left out some key points, like the media's role in promoting WMAF vs AMWF (and Asian women vs Asian men), laws that kept Asian men bachelor societies, etc. It's not as simple as "preferences" or "AMs just aren't as proactive or desirable as Western men". There are many, many reasons for these things that AMs everywhere, not just Asian American men, need to understand.

I am a Japanese girl born outside Japan. When I saw this video and all these guys talking, all I want to say is "WHAT THE HELL !?" Japanese boys think they are weak and not attractive? Why? Every ethnic group should embrace and love what they are and not say : "we are weak compared to American guys". When do American guys type of personality is the main point to be compared? Please, look after what you're saying, guys. LOVE yourself they way you are, not looking between you and Americans or whatever. And if you think you're weak and don't like it, just improve you self because you want. Not because it's cooler. This type of insecurity and low self-esteem kills me. I just can't believe Japanese people think like this. It's sad.

This was VERY interesting! I greatly respect their points of view and it's a side I've never even thought of. I can kinda understand the whole "Yellow fever" thing though because I live in Middle Tennessee where you have white, black, and Hispanic so the few Asians around have a very... Exotic... appeal, you know, something different, rare. But I definitely believe that people who say they only date a certain race are just limiting themselves - For instance a girl might ONLY date Hispanic guys, but the guy who she would actually be most happy with just happens to be black, you never know what you are missing out on when you limit your options because of something as trivial as skin tone =/

What's so refreshing about this video is how willing these guys are to being so open about sharing their self image and views on race. I highly doubt you would find such candor among white males of similar age in US. Since the US came to power in the early 20th century, it has had decades to export American/Euro exceptionalism while promoting its own narrow definitions of beauty which places white males/females on a pedestal. At the same time, US media (eg, TV, movies, etc) has had a powerful global influence on the perception of non-whites, portraying them as subservient, inferior and not as sexually desirable as whites. Many will deny this but the media has powerful influence on public perception.

+Greg Evershed actually, "race" does not exist on a biological point of view. The word is used nowadays as a sociological concept : races have been constructed in people's minds, without any scientific evidence. The superiority of the "white race" legitimate colonization at its time : today, we can see that this system of "races classification" still exist in peoples' mind, inconsciously, without saying its name. That is why trend in Asia is about "having big eyes" like european peoples, straightening hair for "africain frizzy hair" etc... This is also why people can think as they did in this video! And I think it is a great thing to point out this problem, in order to destroy inequality!

I don`t know, discussing about those things are really complicated. For example, if I like only tall and skinny girls, that wouldn`t make me prejudiced against fat or small people, right? But if I happen to like girls with asian traits like thin eyes, would that makes me automatically a person with yellow fever? Every race have different and unique body traits, and if you happen to like only those certain body traits, that doesn`t mean you`re a racist.

I get your point but thats not what they were saying. Liking someone for body traits is fine but liking someone solely based on a stereotype is not. I wrote this in response to a comment below but I just felt like putting it as it's own comment. Yellow Fever is dehumanizing. There are some non-asians who view and stereotype asian people and date them because of those stereotypes and that "exoticness". For example, there are non-asian men who date asian women because of the stereotype that asian women are submissive, etc. It's like they view them as this "exotic" thing/product and they don't really focus on their personality and them as a human being. They date asians simply because of the details/features they believe come with dating an asian person. It's like you're a product, not a person.
