Thanks for this. I already watched the English dub and it was excellent, but it feels different with the original cast. Don't know if it's the familiarity of the same cast since AC or if I just had a better grasp of the ending the 2nd time, but it hits harder. Just me, maybe. Out of curiosity, Mr Localizer, how bad did they do with the translation? I know enough to detect differences, but not enough to discern what they are. Thanks again, have fun in Japan.
@JKSmith-qs2ii8 ай бұрын
There is a lot of cussing in the localisation that’s not present in the original. Some of the lines in the localisation also have a much romantic flavoured subtext where there is none in the original. Then some words just don’t have a translation in the English language like the verbiage that Zack used when talking to Cloud in the finale has a lovingly tongue-in-cheek way of ending the sentence that means something along the lines of “nice to see you again, bastard (about his girlfriend (Aerith) having feelings for him (cloud)). These are broad lines mind you, there are subtle differences in personality in the characters. Sakurai has played the character for so many years now so there are some subtleties in the dialogue the English cast literally can’t reproduce due to inexperience. The added barrier is that the voice directors for the English voice cast have nothing the do with the production back in Japan, they essentially “outsource”, none of the Japanese devs contribute to the localisation and if they do it’s through a layer of translators. Overall this game is very Japanese and its writer Nojima is also very Japanese, the localisation can’t capture the underlying material completely. It only captures about 70-80% of the original and inserts some contemporary western memes like “shouldn’t have skipped leg day” and that kind of crap.
@Duct_Tape.8 ай бұрын
@@JKSmith-qs2ii Hey, thanks for the reply. Yeah, I've known about the "farming out" of localization issue for decades. Japan loves to sell games in the west, but devs could care less about the translation, and certainly aren't about to quality check it. This has resulted in a lot of lost subtlety in characters and their motivations, often rendering them nearly unrecognizable to their intended form, and occasionally ruined them (for me, at least). Zero from DoD3 and Kaine from Nier come to mind. The incessant need to drastically change character and place names is another thing that drives me insane, the Xenoblade series being a good example. I've found Final Fantasy does a pretty good job, comparatively (Okay, X was kind of bad, but that's just my opinion), so I usually watch the English version first to spend less time reading, and then watch again in Japanese. Any other JRPG franchise, I just watch in Japanese, which can take a bit of hunting around to find, sometimes. An injury precludes me from playing these things, but I love the stories, so I watch them on YT instead.

@@Duct_Tape.It's often very manageable for me to play in Japanese with English subtitles which I did for Rebirth, because most of the subtitles are fine translations. Where they deviate I can tell but I understand the Japanese that's spoken so it's not a huge problem for me. I would greatly appreciate though if the translation could be more accurate to the creators intent however. Maybe in the future when machine learning starts making the subtitles. From what I understand some Japanese developers are already investigating this.

No problem! Thanks for taking the time to check it out. As for the localisation itself, it was servicable. I'm currently playing through Unicorn Overlord at the moment and they took a LOT of creative liberties with that one. I wish I could make a video on the localisations of games without it being 'ragebait', but it just takes too much time when factoring in the amount of people actually interested in a genuine dialogue on the topic. Maybe doing a watch-a-long to the movie editions I've made might make for more palatable content for people who want my direct feelings on localisations? On another note, JKSmith does a great job at summarising the gist of the localisation found in Rebirth

The English translation takes quite a few liberties. As a brief example, the talk on the balcony between Cloud and Tifa...Tifa comes across as more confrontational in the English dub whereas Tifa is more soft-spoken and emotional in the Japanese dub. When Tifa says "Gomen. Heya ni modoru ne (ごめん。 部屋 に 戻る ね。)," it literally translates to "Sorry. (I'm) going back to my room" in English. But the English translation is "Sorry, I just...need some space." I'm fine with English translation/localization taking a few liberties IF they stay true to the original intent or spirit. If they "translate" it to fit "modern" sensibilities, however, that's where I have issues...(Crunchyroll dubs, anyone?)

So… I also just found out about this. They actually have 2 version of dialogue for that scene after cloud said it’s too easy. I’m not sure what exactly aerith said after that - think in a line of “we don’t have much memories” Then cloud responded with “From now on, we make some.” Aerith then reply, “you mean it?” Cloud: “because we are friend (nakama)” - totally reminded me of one piece. Which made the next line more sense for me for aerith’s in english - where she said “now I know where you and I stand.” The japanese one basically said this : Aerith: “I see / of course.” “I’m glad to hear cloud’s feeling.” Then she confessed : “Cloud, I like you, but there is a different kind of ‘like’ and I wonder what kind of ‘like’ is this one?” The rest are pretty much the same i think.

I understand what you meant. i looked into both eng and jap ver and the thing is in this scene Aerith said „Cloudo ga suki“ it‘s basically a love confession in japanese context if you have watched any J Drama or Anime before you will get it. they rarely use the word Aishiteru(I love you) unless their situation are far beyond a couple for example like a married couple or a pair who have been together for many years alr. So in conclusion it’s like confessing her love for sure But she downplayed it a little with the sentence after i don’t know for sure whether it‘s because she was a little shy or she want to meet the real cloud completely first.

I still think that they use “promise” is still pretty clever and it does make sense. And if you think of the title song that she sung in loveless “No promises to keep” where I am surely she wrote cause she knew what was happening and got her memory back. Also this being the end credits and them referring her as “Promises awaits and journeys end” I feel like it fits just perfect and hits even harder. Oh and if you watch the teaser from 2015 there is this line The reunion at hand may bring joy. It may bring fear. But let us embrace whatever it brings. For they are coming back" At last, the promise has been made." and thinking of that I feel like there is a connection between those promises.

That's because he believes he is Zack, proof, in the beginning 15:04, that isn't Cloud - that is actually Zack. The soldiers that are following them and the one who was assigned to Tifa is actually Cloud. After Zack dies, Cloud is unable to tell the difference between his life and that off Zack's. So if you see his character going off character and not usually his typical self it is because he is trying to be Zack. Throughout the game, all the characters have to remind him that the real him is inside, and it just needs to come out. Aerith is obviously the main female character - however, her death makes a significant impact on all the characters. Essentially how I viewed the game, is that both Zack and Aerith were the main characters - however, if you play crisis core, Zack entrust the task to Cloud therefore making him the hero of the story. The relationship that is built in game with the female characters, I think was just merely for fan service, the real story will play out in Part 3 when Tifa helps Cloud and I heard they will be putting a bit of AC in there as well.
