@@mysticmarbles That can happen in America, depending on where you work. It's seen as distasteful, but it's very possible. I've been part of two surprise layoffs, although one of them was not as much of a surprise as the company hoped it was. The second one gave me literally 30 minutes after being notified that I was terminated to clear out my stuff and say goodbye to what co-workers I happened to pass by on the way to my desk (it was in a massive office building downtown so much of that time was spent walking). They also had some guy in a suit shadow me the entire time.

This is kind of the thing is common with both cultures. The need to fit in and make friends. But you may be forced to like, have, or do things in order to talk with people. Pre-2000, people bonded over TV shows since everybody had a set and even cable TV had a small selection of stations. The problem today is our entertainment has been so atomized that it's very hard to bond with other people over something. It's the only reason why some multiplayer games have sustainable fanbases. You have to buy those crappy FIFA and Call Of Duty games and Minecraft in order for you and your friends to bond over something.

Of course friend groups will always form based around common interests, I think that's pretty universal. But I went to school in the 90s and early 2000s, and nobody would say another person was weird for not watching a certain show, or not having some brand name item. (like in the video, everyone has to have an iPhone or they're called weird) You'd be called weird for how you acted, not what you liked. Art school teachers in US hate anime. I remember one of them gave passionate lectures on why anime was bad and it got silly when he admitted he was really into superhero comics, so it wasn’t even a fine art vs pop art thing 😂. Also lots of Americans thought anime/manga = Naruto or cute catgirls and it never crossed their mind that it could have a variety of subject matters and styles, and appeal to different age groups. I’m really into Ima Ichiko’s unique narrative style for example and her stories target an older female audience. But admittedly it’s hard to look past the most popular harem and/or shonen stuff to find what suits your taste - if you aren’t into the most popular.

I think this delves into a bit of a misunderstanding of what a weeb is. A weeb is not necessarily someone who just watches anime. Anime is, in general, incredibly mainstream. 10 years ago when I was in school it was not stigmatized really at all and I can't imagine it's any worse now. That said, being a weeaboo was absolutely ridiculed. A weeb being someone whose personality was anime. Who styled their life after things they saw in anime. The person who called things "kawaii". The person who, in essence, wished that had been born Japanese. That is the true meaning of weeb.

I'm the inventor of the weeaboo meme, and I just want you to know how right you are. I know, I know, i have no credentials - but it's true: I took the Perry Bible Fellowship joke I just read, and applied it to the exact same logic as above only applied to chad-animu-enjoyer vs beta-weeb-hoarder. You'd be on the forums/comments talking about the art or the story, and some literal deranged person would interject with some unhinged unsolicited advice, and it would be like "Did someone just say some weeaboo shit?!" and that's where weeb came from. This is the essence of weebness. Saying "lol" in real life is somewhere on the Weeb spectrum. It's all fun and jokes until you realise they live among us. Learn the signs before it's too late.

I always laugh and shake my head when some weeb (on the INTERNET, of all places!) tries to explain they're not a weeb because someone is weebier than they are. It's that social survival instinct kicking in and creating all kinds of stories for why they're better than someone else. And ego preservation, knowing inside that they're only a couple bad decades away from sliding down and becoming more like "those people". (Who are actually extremely brave, if they're not mentally damaged. Social acceptance is the most important thing, and willfully being cringe is not something any measly coward could ever do.) Few appreciate context drift and how stupid and arbitrary so many norms are. Do you think MOWING GRASS is normal and sane?! Think of all the millions of hours of human life and money poured down the drain, all spent on giving grass a *haircut*. We're packed to the gills with such weird creepy religions like that. Things are only normal because everyone else does them too, no other reason. When I was a kid, watching anime was not "normal". You had to be on the extreme edge of dweebdom, trading tapes with other nerds in Japan, to see any of this stuff. When you were a kid, they had long since started airing mainstream normie anime on kid's TV blocs. In thirty years? It might be "normal" to literally conceive children with robots shaped like cartoon characters. Like Jessica Rabbit or Elmer Fudd. A thing of absolute horror to us, but a completely natural and cool thing to do, for them.

Like 15 years ago, anime was always something other teenage Asian Americans got into because it was cooler and much more action packed than everything else teens watched. And if other people found out you were a weeb you'd be looked at like a nerd and made fun of. Ever since AoT, I've seen it become much more common for people of all ages and non-Asians here in America to watch all the super popular animes like AoT, Demon Slayer, One Punch, and just about every Shonen. Ever since COVID, even more people got into anime with all that time on their hands. Once gyms opened back up, TONS of people were wearing anime shirts, and I go to a gym that has close to 100 people minimum most hours. I think this kind of behavior in the video could definitely happen here in America too, over anime, which is just crazy to think of.
@Crimson0047
@Crimson0047 3 ай бұрын
Here in the US anime usually goes on and off when it comes to popularity, for example the two anime mentioned the most in the video had made anime not the "weird" things for a small amount of time for some groups, for example, I had moved to a rural town in 2019, compared to my old location anime was basically taboo, and every so often a few people may talk about it but, it was pretty rare due to wanting to "fit in" which is exactly like the "using an Iphone because everybody else does" thing you mentioned in the video, in a previous place I lived, American football was basically the trending topic locally, so speaking about anything else would cause you to be ignored just like you mentioned in the video. Sadly, most people just can't seem to handle peer pressure all that well which can cause even more issues outside of social life.

It goes much deeper than just not understanding the occasional reference. The only difference is whether anime is considered weird or the norm in any particular country 😅 At least for Gen Alpha it seems to be the norm pretty much everywhere now, but we'll see if that changes when they reach high school age.

First Anime I saw was Akira on TV sometime late 80's. Growing up with Dominion Tank Police, Wicked City, Vampire Hunter D, then after many years in the boom of the late 90's FLCL, Love Hina, then Azumanga Daioh! and Suzumiya Haruhi, and now after many years again the absolute BOOM of fantastic shows like Odd Taxi, Bocchi! The Rock and Spy x Family I'm not afraid of being a 45-year old casual anime watcher. Many would perhaps classify me as a weeb but I'm certainly not completely otaku lol. But if people think that I don't care. Their loss. Reading Juni Ito's "Tomie" hardcover (or was it the Shiver collection hardcover) on the train back from Oslo Pride last summer got me conversing with a lovely fellow Ito fan trans person and that kept me socially entertained for most of the trip. Shoutout to you, random stranger. Stay strong. And all y'all in here: Stay weird and interesting.

This brings back memories.😅 Though to be fair, I've seen far more anime merch worn around Hobby Lobby than comic book merch.
