A ROCKET attempting to put a satellite into orbit exploded just seconds after lift-off in Japan.
Fiery debris and huge plumes of smoke filled the air after Space One's botched launch of its Kairos rocket.

This was not the Japanese Space Agency’s (JAXA) rocket. This was a private startup called “Space One”. It was their first launch, something went wrong, they’ll fix it. Engineers have been saying since the 1950’s “Space is hard.” It really is. But no need to console all of Japan, their space agency is well past this stage of development.

Unfortunately, this has been normal in Japan for several years now, and doesn’t seem to be making as many improvements as other more diverse countries have been achieving in recent years. We can look at many examples within Japan that can be adding to this problem. Mainly common Japanese business practices, lack of diversity of the types of people and ideas you get there, and an aging population are all adding to it.

@@wokewokerman5280It was a software-commanded self-destruct, they have automated so much of the process, they even got rid of the Range Safety Officer. Since the boost phase (first stage) is powered by a solid rocket motor, there are not that many things that could have gone wrong. The SRM nozzle appeared to gimbal too much initially (or it could have been an uneven propellant casing pour when the stage was manufactured). Who knows? Software failure? Perhaps should have left it in open loop longer before going to closed loop control? I hope they share their findings.

Rocket science is a very complex and precise science and one can not simply copy and paste the blueprint of other successful rocket program and think you are good to go!!! That is why it is such a ridiculous suggestion when the west said that China copy the usa on its rockets and space program. You need intelligent scientist and engineers with higher IQ than the average person to operate a space program successfully. I believe it only when the Chinese also managed to clone all the western rocket scientist and engineers in order to operate their space program.

I remember in boarding school we used to be donated Estes rocket motors. They were so predictable at blowing up ~50% of the time we'd just make cheap rockets. Then the competition was to see whose rocket had the most spectacular failure. Kids would ground up an additional rocket motor and put it in baggie or balloon and fill it with lighter fluid and place it above the rocket motor. That's what this thing looked like to me.

How high did your rocket go? Unless it’s one of the larger ones, this flight probably beat it. It didn’t fly for long, but due to the high TWR and longer (in comparison) burn time would’ve brought it to a fairly high altitude.
@mistertagnan
@mistertagnan 2 ай бұрын
Just did some rough math. It flew for about 4 seconds, and accelerated at about 11.58m/s^2 at launch. Final velocity was probably 46-58m/s (50-80 when accounting for changing acceleration), and an altitude of 92-145m (100-170ish when accounting for changing acceleration)

Thinking of the Gemini and Mercury programs and all the ones that blew up then. Thankfully none of them manned though the rocket that Glenn made his flight in was the Atlas which was notorious. These things happen. Im sure all the kids there were disappointed and wondering what was happening. But did the lady think it was a manned flight or something? Just seems a strange reaction to a rocket carrying a satellite unless she works for the company that was launching it.

I was thinking the same thing; the propellant casting could have been flawed. Or, something caused the SRM gimbal to move into an extreme position, putting the entire vehicle off course. It could have been a software flaw, or overcompensation of the flight control system (i.e. leave in open loop longer, like all other vehicles do). Or a stuck valve (GHe actuation?) causing the nozzle to gimbal? They have data to look through, and they’ll figure it out.
