The Type 100 (sometimes called the Type 0) was one of the initial Japanese experiments in paratroop rifles. Manufactured from standard Nagoya Arsenal Type 99 rifles, the Type 100 used a set of interrupted lugs at the chamber to allow the rifle to be broken into two short sections. Only a few hundred of these were manufactured for testing, and ultimately the Type 2 design (with a locking wedge) was adopted instead.

Great presentation. Back in the mid 70s in old Sacramento, there was a closed down bar that was going thru remodeling. They found an Arisaka rifle hanging on wall just in back of the bar counter. My cousin was able to take it home because no body wanted it. It so happened to be one of those type 100 Para models. It was sold at the local Road Runner Gun Show for only $600 bucks. Wonder where is it now.

$600 was a LOT of money in the mid-1970s. It is probably equivalent to $1,200 today. In 2022 six-hundred dollars is still a lot of money. One does not simply fork over $600 within thinking long and hard about it. The person who paid $600 cold, hard, cash for that Type 100 paratrooper Arisaka knew what he was purchasing. The person who sold the break-down rifle must have also been aware of its true collector value, otherwise he could have been gulled into selling it for $50.

A good way to negate that risk of losing the bolt handle is one of two ways. One, put a threading bit in one of the take down areas of the gun, which you can screw the handle onto in order to prevent yourself from losing it. Two, make the butt stock a hinge, and put a recess in there to screw the handle into, leaving a decent amount of space around where the knob would be so you can easily grab it and rotate it to unthread it, and pop it back in place.

Many Japanese soldiers I understand, threw away the dust covers due to them rattling, thus making noise. The concept is of course good. However in the field it doesn’t always work out. I gave a Type -99 with dust cover bayonet, to the Airborne Special Operations museum in Fayetteville, in 2000, just before I retired. It was given to me by a WW-2 veteran buddy of my dad and a friend of mine also. I didn’t wish to see it lost after I am gone. Also I included the veteran’s name and WW-2 record.👍😊🇺🇸

This is what the German Fallschirmjager troops needed, a rifle that could be broken down into two parts and carried with the paratrooper. The Germans never thought to emulate the Japanese break-down bolt action rifle and continued to drop the rifles in a separate container. More likely, the Germans would have turned their noses down at the thought of adopting anything from Japan, even though they were wartime allies. Adapting the excellent German Kar 98k bolt action rifle to the Japanese-style breakdown action would have made a difference for the Luftwaffe's paratroopers in large-scale airborne operations like, Mercury, the invasion of Crete. Fallschirmjager parachuted, according to German doctrine, armed only with semi-automatic pistols while their main infantry weapons landed in separate, protective, metal canisters. Precious time was lost as landed Fallschirmjager struggled out of their parachutes and desperately sought their weapon cannisters while under withering British .303 rifle and machine gun fire.

This is probably a slightly silly question but I noticed the gas relief hole. Is that something that would be spewing hot gasses when the gun fires, like the sides of a revolver? Would a soldier need to remember to keep that hole from pointing in close proximity to anything important?
@ForgottenWeapons
@ForgottenWeapons 8 жыл бұрын
+Naomi Nekomimi That hole is a safety measure - if you should have a cartridge case rupture, the gas will vent out that hole rather than traveling back along the bolt and venting into the shooter's face. Early cartridge production was more susceptible to that type of failure, and designing mechanisms to safeguard the shooter was an important part of early bolt action rifle design. For example, it is one of the major shortcomings with the German Gewehr 88, leading to its replacement with the Mauser Model 98.

A lot of shooters and even some collectors fail to recognize how strong the metal work was on the Arisaka .....Early model Arisaka actions Rockwell test incredibly strong . They are so strong a lot of custom gunsmiths make custom barreled actions ....high dollar items .....on Arisaka receivers . 6.5 Arisaka cartridge was judged the most lethal small arms round used in WW2 by Picatinny and Dover Ballistics labs in the gun and ammunition trials of the early 50's

I can imagine the people coming up with this. "Folding stocks are only for the weak. We shall jump with our guns in pieces! Not like they might be needed instantly on landing." Still, quite an amusing idea, but one might worry about the gun just flying apart during firing. Veryy strong latches or not.

Would having a folding/removable stock not have been a better idea? Seems like it would have been less complex than splitting the rifle halfway down its length. Correct me if I'm being stupid obviously.

hey Ian I have an idea why don't you do videos on the military/political systems of the Japanese empire and Germany which leads to all these guns the history is amazing and it shows you how guns are a big reason why some history even happened the Japanese could control the mainland China today had the guns been adopted earlier I love the history and you channel ugh it's great

I’m assuming these rifles will be expensive. Are there modern affordable bolt action that can be taken apart like this rifle? I also wonder if you could swap the back part of the rifle for one from another rifle. For example if during combat or the jump, a soldier’s rifle somehow got broken and a fellow soldier was killed and he could take the other rifle part. I know this is probably an unlikely scenario and it will make more sense to just grab the other rifle. Ok let’s say the front part of the other rifle also got broken. I’m more interested in whether the rifle could operate or if it will malfunction. Thanks, very interesting video!

For some reason takedown bolt actions never took off. There are a fair few level guns and Ruger is into it, with their various .22 and carbine takedowns.

with the bolt handle, are you sure the sprung pip on the end, after unthreading, is not designed to pop into another hole drilled somewhere on the gun so that it was out the way during jump? seems like it would be a good idea. great video again though Ian, cheers.

Why hasn't any American firearm manufacture come up with its own breakdown bolt action rifle based on the Arisaka paratroop 100 model? This would be an excellent idea.The bolt handle doesn't need to be that large. The Moisin Nagant Type 44 bolt action rifle utilized a small, short bolt handle that worked perfectly and due to the smaller size, wasn't as obtrusive. The proposed American civilian copy of the breakdown Arisaka could be chambered in either .308 or 7.62 x 39mm. The barrel length could be 20" or 24". There could be a camp/survival version in 20" barrel and a hunting version for 24" barrel. I don't know if a 18" barrel would be attractive, maybe for a camp carbine version. But I wouldn't chamber the 18" barrel for the .308, too powerful. Of course we don't need the superfluous monopod nor the anti-aircraft sights. Keep the clip loading system, although that is prohibited now in California. So you'd have to consider removable clip guides. I think this breakdown Arisaka type paratrooper would be highly attractive to American buyers. I'd prefer the 20" barrel chambered for the 7.62 x 39mm cartridge. Last thought. This would add to the cost and complexity but how about a 10 round detachable or nondetachable box? A detachable box has the advantage of swapping to a five-rounder for those states that limit hunting rifles to 5 rounds. The cost, however, would go up. It would add to the firearm's versatility and make it more ideal for the militia/partisan home defense weapon.
