If you're here searching for really effective KZbin Japanese lessons you've come to the right place. Misa-sensei's lessons are very well thought out and thorough. She explains differences in synonymous words that may be used only on writing or to change the nuance of a sentence. She explains pitch accent, something textbooks and most Japanese teachers skip over or fail to acknowledge altogether. She spends a LOT of time scripting, recording, and sometimes acting parts in these videos while providing tons of real world example sentences. Yes, many of Misa's lessons are quite long. Just take them in sections if you don't have time for the entire lesson. You won't regret it. If you enjoy her lessons please join the rest of us in helping to support her efforts to keep producing free videos by giving her a "thumbs up", subscribing and, if possible, consider supporting her on Patreon. I've watched her videos for a couple of years now and they have really helped me up my level of ability. I tend to watch each video 3 or more times. First, I watch it all the way through for the overall idea. Next, I watch it again while taking notes of the new grammar points and vocabulary. I usually have to do this in two or more separate sessions. Finalky. I'll review the video again after a week or so comparing my notes to see if I missed anything. Misa's videos are not my only study method. However you study best, these something here for you. She has a way if explaining things clearly that makes her lessons effective and enjoyable. Good luck!

「トムに謝ってほしい」 This, without any context, would be confusing. It's either, "I want you to apologise to Tom," or "I want Tom to apologise." If I want to say, "I want you to apologise to Tom," which one should I say 「(あなたに)トムに謝ってほしい」or 「トムに(あなたに)謝ってほしい」?Or, does the the way we arrange it change the meaning or not?
@JapaneseAmmowithMisa
@JapaneseAmmowithMisa 2 жыл бұрын
The context matters the most! 「あなたにトムに謝ってほしい 」would mean “I want YOU to apologise to Tom.” Or if you want to say “I want Kate to apologise to Tom” then you say 「ケイトにトムに謝ってほしい」So the word order matters here but it sounds a bit confusing. So, people generally just say 「トムに謝ってほしい」and guess the meaning from the context.

Watching Misa video, remembered how grammar tends to be confusing at times: Tom に日本語を勉強して欲しい = I want you to study Japanese, Tom. But: Tom に謝って欲しい = I want you to apologize to Tom. Same structure as previous sentence, but the interlocutor is different. According to the first sentence it would be “I want Tom to apologize” , but instead is “I want you to apologize to Tom”.

Grean lesson as always. But I have couple of questions. 1. You said 「トムに謝ってほしい」 means "I want you to appologise to Tom" Could I also translate it as "I want Tom to appologise to me"??? Because at the beginning there was 「ジョンに日本語を勉強してほしい」 - I want Jonn to learn Japanese. 2. How can I say "I want John to appologise to Tom?" 「ジョンにトムに謝ってほしい」??? How to understand who should apologize to whom?

I already knew this grammar point, but there is something that really confuses me and I was hoping you would explain it more deeply. The particle に indicates the person you want something to do, but it can also indicate the person to whom you want a specific person to do something. For example トムに謝ってほしい can either mean “I want Tom to apologize” or “I want you to apologize to Tom”, 誰かに手伝ってほしい can either mean “I want someone to help me” or “I want you to help someone”, and so one. How do we know when is which? Simply by contest? But contest is not always so clear 😅🤔😭

Context makes it clear, or else word order will make it more clear. "I want you to apologize to Tom", would have "You" come first in the sentence, then "Tom"... Anata ni Tomu ni ayamatte hoshii.

I have a question? When you said that the てほしい form could be used to refer to someone else when used with に , do we have to guess according to context if sentences such as TOMに謝ってほしい means "I want you to apologize to Tom" or "I want Tom to apologize to me"? Just want to make sure that's the conclusion I am supposed to be making.

I have a question! If you wanted to say "I want John to apologize to Maria." is it okay to use に twice and write it as 「ジョンにマリアに謝って欲しい。」or should you use something else as a subsitute for either particle? You can't use は because that would imply John is the one who wants the apology to happen, right? So is there something else or is it okay?

I hope John and Tom are referred to as ジョンさん and トムさん, respectively, and not just ジョン and トム ^^; I don't know why this is, but it seems that a lot of Japanese people are taught not to use honorifics for foreign names. Many of us long-time residents in Japan are trying to correct this person by person, but it's really exhausting after a while. It would be wonderful if we had more support in spreading this simple show of respect🙏🏼

Ex, “Misa cheated on Tom, トムに謝ってほしい。” This would be transferred to “(I) want (her) to apologize to Tom” Ex, “Tom cheated on Miss, トムに謝ってほしい。” and for this “(I) want Tom to apologize to (her)” Hope it helps, ganbatte!
