They like that extra air to breathe & space to grow. Deny them that & theyll grow slower plus you cant shake them well. A jar filled to just at or slightly over 3/4 is about perfect....it wouldve spawned at a closer rate if not better. This theory works when colonizing substrate too. A bin with more breathing room is preferred & an occasional burping of the lid to remove all the carbon dioxide & other gases is preferred(id do it about once every 2-3 days until fully colonized). However, i also note that colonizing a nice wet substrate naturally makes vapor via the heat of the mycelium & its best to keep that vapor shooting back into the substrate via having a bonus cover(such as an alcohol sterilized sheet of wax paper lightly on top). It will boost the humidity below the wax & make your mycelium very happy. I like to use the wax paper while fruiting as well until the fruiting bodies are plentiful & starting to grow faster, then i toss it out & do it again next harvest. Also dont confuse burping the lid with fanning. Burping the lid is just opening it for a few seconds so the gasses can escape. That momentary exchange wont trigger fruiting. In nature, oxygen is present above the ground at all times...its odd to deny them any oxygen & force them to choke on the gasses they excrete...could even trigger early contamination depending on the substrate. Hope this train of thought helps somebody. If youre afraid of lifting the lid because of contam, try spraying the room with lysol really good 1 hour before with your bin's air exchange ports fully blocked or covered with a shirt or towel. That will ensure any random spores floating in the air are less likely to be cuz lysol kills them. Ozone gas generators do the same but again, protect your mycelium from it cuz itll hurt them all the same.

How would you suggest innoculating the zip lock bag with a liquid cukture syringe. ?
@KitchenMycology
@KitchenMycology 7 ай бұрын
I go over all this in detail in the course, but it's simple: Remove the needle from the syringe so you don't poke the Ziploc and squirt 1cc - half in front and half in back of the bag. LC is WET, so don't go crazy or you'll get contam on rice.

What did you inoculate with? Spore, / Liquid Culture Syringe? Did you use micropore Tape along the top for good Fresh Air Exchange? Spores are slow... Next time, inoculate two Ziploc bags, when they're fully colonized, go Grain to Grain to the other ones. G2G is super fast and resists contamination. You can inoculate 10 bags with one fully colonized bag.

@KitchenMycology spore syringe. I had tried a few liquid culture syringes in 5 lb grow bags from mushroom supplies last month & those still haven't done anything either. I didn't realize that I had gotten the easy open ziploc bags so instead of taping along the whole top I ended putting 3 holes with a soldering iron about 2 inches below the zipper then covering with micropore tape. As a beginner this has been pretty frustrating but I appreciate you taking the time to reply. I really like your channel!

@@ahlers1977 Glad to help man. One of my mantras is "Don't put all your eggs in one basket." Now, small FAE Holes don't work well. You need the whole top of the Ziploc covered with a strip of Micropore Tape and make sure that it's not closed. At this point, I would test that syringe on Agar to make sure it's viable. -- You can get pre-poured Agar / Petri Dishes on Amazon, if you don't want to make your own. In my course, I show how to go from a Spore Print to Harvest. Not trying to push it, but I'm just saying...

Thank You, I just tried a freezer bag full of water in my Instant Pot and it melted. My next thought is if I can use seal-a-meal plastic tubes to make grow-out bags in whatever length I want, I can cut a vent and cover it with 0.2micro vent tape? They would be heavier and perhaps reusable and much cheaper than the ones they sell. Is anyone else doing this? @@KitchenMycology
