Recently HYBE and some other companies have been trying to apply a " BTS formula" to create another group like BTS. HYBE is doing this most pointedly with &TEAM, giving them the aura of BTS' struggle and other aspects. But there is no formula because BTS is based in authentic struggle and hard won community. There's not a mantle that can be transferred and donned by another group, instantly turning them into BTS. That's my long-winded way of saying that since Hip-Hop is grounded in authentic struggle and community it can't be "learned" as a formula in a classroom environment. It started as a way to express, through various ways, what had no place for expression elsewhere and exposes the soul of a community. While, It's true that even this early BTS had struggled much, they were still learning how to integrate that struggle and confidently use it in their personal writing and production. Many of the true lessons BTS learned in AHL were sneaky and grew out of experiential learning. The class subject might have been Beatboxing or B-boying but the real lesson was in self confidence. The songwriting was practice in telling their own story, in their own way. At this point 4 out of 7 were not songwriters or producers and a few were introverts. Earlier, JK had to be sent to America to learn how to take his technical dancing ability and make it a channel of expression. I think AHL had less to do with the technical aspect of Hip-Hop than teaching its real lesson, how an individual artist grounds themselves in authentic expression of their life & their community's experiences. Of course a short bootcamp can't produce completely polished artists but helped them lay the groudwork to becoming more accomplished artist's in communicating authentically, which is the group's hallmark. The stories of the founders and early creators in Hip-Hop were more important as inspiration than later artists, IMO.

A lot of Artists/Idols use Hip-Hop "Black" Culture as an aesthetic or a costume rather than truly respecting or paying homage to the culture. I'm not saying it's intentional, but even pre AHL/'Dark & Wild' it's even apparent in BTS's early MVs & in the way that the would speak and present themselves. BTS has been one of the most respectful Artists/Idols when it comes to Hip-Hop/Black/African culture. They are good about paying homage and giving credit, and I think a lot of that is due to what they learned from AHL (as well as from caring ARMY). They have also learned that they can rap and make MVs while staying true to themselves and their own culture. Given the time period and the MNET effect, I think that people give Coolio too hard of a time. Early 2010's were cringe, k-reality is often manipulated, and Hip-Hop can really be a matter of life and death. If anyone else hasn't mentioned, the movie 'Sister Act' was based off of their vocal coach, Iris. BTS have always been respectful and kind. They might have reached the same level of understanding, empathy, and respect on their own, but I personally (as a Black Woman) am grateful for all they learned through AHL (despite MNET's less than kind methods). Thanks for picking ROB back up! I really appreciate your reactions- they often provide relief to my day during a difficult time.

What I really really appreciate about you guys is that you pay attention to the finer details. Hardly any reactors I’ve seen have picked up on the time-line of events: how everything until now was just one year and also most esp surrounding American Hustle life and the recording of ‘Dark and Wild’ album being completed in a two week period. When BTS talks about working till exhaustion a lot of people watching BTS music videos or dance practice don’t realise it also includes all their variety content being shot (wether it’s rookie king, AHL, Gayo or Run BTS) alongside music show promotions, lyric writing, recording, media obligations, endorsements, interviews concert preparation and rehearsals etc. They don’t half ass anything but give it a 100%. To think that they worked so hard in AHL to the point Tae needed medical attention. The phrase you have worked hard really it’s different with all this in mind. And how often do we hear them say I will work harder. Thank you for sharing your insightful and fascinating perspectives. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

One thing about AHL and that period of time that they went through, is that it really was a gift from Bang PD but at the same time a way for them to survive. Just like what Bang PD said, at the time, they were struggling. He never made it clear, but a lot of people believed he was talking about the company's financial problems (as it was said that Bighit nearly went bankrupt at one point). So he had to make the deal with Mnet to create this reality show to (1) give a chance for the boys to learn about hiphop from its roots while (2) earn enough money for them to release their next album (Dark & Wild). I think if you listen to the album itself, you can feel just how raw the music in the whole album is and the lyrics of the songs released within that album held their true emotions and dreams, which, to be honest, made the album one of my most favourite from BTS vintage discography A lot of ARMYs felt a bit cringe at the beginning with Coolio too (including me lol) so I totally understood your reaction lmao. honestly, I do feel like Coolio went in to the show with his own prejudice, knowing that he's an old school hiphop artist so it's understandable for him to get a bit territorial. but I remember that he changed his stance and his attitude with the boys once he saw them perform and heard their music. You should watch AHL in your own time and maybe you can see more context about the show. You'll see how much this show ended up forming the boys' characters that we see today (how they remained humble, how they constantly give back to the society, etc) at the beginning, it did feel like they only scratched the surface with hiphop but I feel like it was only meant to help them "break through the stereotypes" that they knew about hiphop before going deeper into it, just like what you saw them learn from Warren G and their other mentors.

No, the garage studio was in Korea. They literally did not have a studio in Korea (had to buy equipment in the USA to bring home) and had to ask Bang PD's connections to let them record in their studios in the US for this album. The most heartwarming/heartbreaking part of BTS' 2013-2015 is that even if they had so little budget left after all their operating expenses, they poured money into the variety show "Run BTS" because BTS were being disrespected or ignored in mainstream TV shows. What's equally amazing is that talented songwriters like PDogg and Slow Rabbit really stuck with Bang PD despite that they could easily be hired elsewhere. It's like the helpful hands of destiny really worked overtime to make BTS BTS.

The Silver-Linings (or Highlights) of The America Hustle Life: (Even though I dislike the show, there are moments worth remembering) Suga: You like this chain? Three dollar. JK and Tae being embarrassed by Jimin dancing on the street and handing out fliers to their concert. Jin trying to bark as he beatboxes. Jimin in his dance-off instructing his opponent on what he needed to work on. Hobi being in his element in his dance-off and crushing it. Jimin giving Tony a yogurt drink and looking extremely happy that he accepted it. Baby JK panicking about being around a pretty girl. All seven of them standing together with the girl extras and talking in Korean of how nervous the girls make them and telling each other to relax. Suga scoring on Tony, a former basketball player. The guys being taught to twerk. Tae: -Speaking English to strangers -Saying: “Confidence, confidence” before talking to girls. -Getting a discount on sunglasses because he’s cute and the woman who sold them giving him her number. -Teaching two different people how to say “Jimin is stupid” in Korean -Accidentally hitting on one of the worker’s girlfriends. -Climbing onto Nate’s bed saying “noisy noisy noisy” after Nate woke them up by shouting.

Fun fact: Iris Stevenson is the woman the movies "Sister Act" is about (lead role by Whoopi). I think even though American Hustle life is somewhat cringe to watch, it has some great parts too. And what I love is BTS attitude that every situation is a learning experience. They build on. I think they also never wanted to be in a situation of not knowing the answer aka knowing the history of and behind the music. It is apparent that they kept learning from this. Their references and inspirations in their music shows they know the TRUE hip hop and rap - you'll see what I mean later on.

Sometimes it sounds like you're looking for something negative but it's not that. More than anything, this trip was to teach them about the long and hard trip to success, that it's not all peaches and cream. Their life in Korea is pretty comfortable. Korean youth are normally coddled by their mothers (fathers provide the financing) and regardless of poor or rich, they provide them with everything if it means their future success; education is a priority and Koreans view even the tiniest of experiences as part of their education. When RM says he couldn't do it again, he speaks more about the hardships of being away from home for so long (the comforts and cleanliness of their home, Korean food, feeling safe wherever you walk at whatever time of the day/night, feeling relaxed, jet lag ( transcontinental travel is no joke, especially within 2 weeks) etc. To a Korean, there is no better place on earth to live than South Korea; especially nowadays. Korea has everything possible and if you are wealthy, it is a masterpiece lifestyle. Things to understand about Koreans; (1) We say "it's so hard" habitually. This is a form of bragging like letting people know that we are busy cause we are working on something important and we are achieving. "It's so hard" does not mean we are sad, we are tired, we want to runaway, etc. It is a form of confidence. Koreans also of course feel stress but real deteriorating stress is expressed non verbally like physical and mental illness. We also say "it must be hard, you are working hard" as compliments. To a Korean, being lazy is shameful. (2). If you give Koreans time off, at first they'll love it but quickly, they'll start to feel antsy. They start to feel like they're wasting time, life and become irritable; they need to constantly be working at something, whatever it may be for their future. We are engineered that way. (3) Koreans do not view hardship as a negative, we view it as an obstacle that needs to be surmounted on the roadway to success. It has always been a part of our more than 5000 years history. (4) Koreans are encouraged to work hard and not play during our youth so that our 30's, 40's, when we are at our peak, can be enjoyed and fruitful and not mired by worries about our uncertain futures like money. 50's and beyond are a time of reflection, relaxing, and giving back and again not soaked in financial woes. BTS knew and know exactly what they were/are doing. Look at them now still in their 20's and they basically have the world in the palms of their hands. Most enviable lives to date, (they went bottom to top on their own efforts and hard work, no financial woes for their generations to come, worldwide fame, global respect and love, no scandals to date, now doing things and making decisions based on personal interests, dreams, causes, etc, they are shareholders at a massive company, they are soon to be business moguls shaking and changing the world.) . This is all due to what they did as youth. This came from that "hard work", no whining, no complaining, no "I need to take it easy" attitude. They had fun while working cause they were working at what they loved. You cannot apply "american" views onto to Koreans. We view life and everything in it very differently. PDBang is not some evil boss. He made who BTS are; he was their leader, their provider, their father, their older brother, their main engine that made sure they got their dreams to come true. He is the genius behind the machine. He not only made them into stars, he made them into the men they are today by teaching them life lessons and showing them the ups and downs of life so that they are always prepared for the worst. This is why every BTS member's parents entrusted their sons to this man for more than a decade and will continue to do so. That's not an easy thing to do. More than 12 years into their careers and not one scandal that riddles most successful musicians; this should tell you everything about this tight union. PDBang is a highly educated and grounded human being. BTS success is a unique story because of him, he saw something very special in these boys as individuals and as a team, and unlike other management companies, decided to invest everything into this one group. The eight are one family. This is not a "cliche" comment like some armys might use. It is just fact. There's a professional translator who is constantly by their side. Of course it's off camera. This is a content based show, like all others. Ideas are thrown, contracts signed, both parties agree, etc. Please let things be instead of dissecting it. If you go from one end to another, you'll get the full story. There is always a story arc and this video does not show the entirety of this reality show and its purpose. This is a fun show created for entertainment not a documentary. goodness boys........."They've seen fireworks before right?" my goodness!!!! Fireworks were invented in asia!!!!! First, I would like to say thank you both for always giving us amazing content. So I know this is a bit late but just in case no one had informed you on the last chapter but Jungkook actually didn't go to a regular High School. He went to a school for children who are studying for the K-industry (such as becoming an idol, actress/actor, model, producer/songwriters, fashion designer and so on). He actually graduated with many other famous idols in the industry that day. But since we are on the topic of this chapter and I don't think anyone has mentioned it yet but actually one of the girls [Jewel] BTS casted ended up unfortunately passing away in a car crash in September of 2014. She had died from immediate impact after a faulty airbag went off. Jewels father filed a law suit for wrongful death against the airbag manufacturer, the rental company she was driving, and Honda which at that time also became one the biggest recall for Honda vehicles. Jewels father said he is very grateful towards BTS for giving his daughter an amazing opportunity and even talked about how Jewel actually predicted BTS success which is just amazing.

As has already been said once and as you could see here - for BangTan (and many other idols &artists) to fall asleep in the practice hall, to fall asleep while they are applying makeup, to fall asleep during a break while they are taking photos, while waiting for their turn to record a music show and much more - this is a "common thing", because they always work so much and so hard that they can literally go out at any moment and anywhere (including lying on the floor). No matter how much time passes (2016-17, 2018-2021, any year), watching various special videos that show "behind the scenes" - sometimes we can still see Bangtan falling asleep lying on the floor or trying to get on the sofa or chairs.

Everything was riding on Dark n Wild and BTS succeeding financially in their 2nd year. I enjoy AHL for what it is, a rare precious time capsule into the early struggles of BTS.

The first few episodes are rough, I personally think that the tv production crew were trying to set up a fake-drama-mean reality show. What i appreciate tho, is the experience that bangtan had whether it be good or bad. it did not deter them from pursuing whatever they wanted to. it was a one of those learning stages that wasnt pleasant but at the same time it helped shape who they are today. that’s why im so proud of bangtan❤❤❤

The task about picking up girls, while yes a stereotype of hip hop culture, in this case was more of an opportunity to practise their English and gain some confidence while conversing in another language. There’s also the difference in culture between how a Korean would speak to a stranger and how an American would, Korean has a lot more formality and respect so being openly friendly with a stranger is something they would need to get used to

Dark and Wild didn’t do so well in Korea and this is when the company was at its lowest. However, Danger started to bring in more western fans. Later with The Most Beautiful Moments in Life 1, I Need U will bring them more Korean fans, while Dope will resonate more with the west.

While American Hustle Life was a cringy moment it actually helped ground BTS and established many of the traits they continue to display today. It created a moment in life that the guys learned from and molded into their own vibe and outlook as a team/career to this day.

I'm late but it's interesting to me that the advice that was highlighted is also the message at the core of their songs It may well be because it resonated with who they wanted to be. They don't have to be like other groups, they just have to be Bangtan. With the fireworks, I think it's just fascinating to most people no matter how often they see it. BTS like so many artists, put in the work and while they were exhausted I am sure that looking back, these are the moments that definitely shape you, not just in music but life in general.

Hi, I am back. Good reaction, ty. The 1st 2 albums were EPs actually. After they published a full length album. They worked on the full length album in USA during American Hustle Life the reality TV show. It has great songs really! Danger is a fav. 🥰 American Hustle life was important. I feel like they learned a lot of very valuable lessons being here. Yes, it was cringe but beneficial nonetheless. Iris by the way is the lady that inspired Sister Act! I love those movies. I plan to watch this show eventually too. Like Jin can beat box come on! That is so cool. JK got to come to USA twice once on his own. The agency really invested a lot into him and the others. They did as much as they could. Love this series. They did this in 2014. I think they had 200 fans for their free concert in America. They were growing steadily. If u pay attention to the series one of the interviewers stated that a question shows up on the Korean google site when are they debuting? when u put in BTS! That just blew my mind. 0.0 And remember 350 fans showed up at fan meet more than was expected. It was slow and steady but they had momentum. =0) Hugs. -NY USA 2019 Army💟

BIGHIT was broke during the Dark and Wild era and if the album didn't do well. BTS would have to disband. No pressure there. That's why the boys were working so hard. BTW Erik also produced ON in 2020. I think he is working w JIMIN currently.

What you are seeing in this episode is part of the series called American Hustle. It can be difficult to stomach at times but remember this is for a show. The BTS members really embrace each task they are given and use this as an opportunity to learn. You should really watch all of the episodes (5 I think).

Hello guys. I often see your reaction about BTS. Well I am maybe not your subscriber but I really love to see your reaction videos. You guys one of the genuine reactors I have seen. I am from India. I am a teacher by profession and psychological counselor by passion. BTS found me when I am very critical stage on my life. I was so heartbreaking that time that I don't want to live my life anymore. But this 7 angel save my life and give me hope and courage to live my life once again. I am 6 year old army myself since then. They really have the power to change people's lives. And I am the one of the living truth myself. I am not going to think negative ever in my life. This is the lesson they taught me. I have two reasons why I became a counselor in my life and they are one of that reason. Thank you guys for giving your love to our 7 angels. Love you guys and in advance A very very happy new year. 😊😊😊😊😊💜💜💜💜💜💜💜.

BTW...they have translators there, besides RM. The have a lot of staff/crew present the entire time. But I love seeing this...although some of the guys where ass hats and 1 got kicked off! But why should they adjust who they are to appease BTS. Coolio is Coolio and Warren G completely opposite of the spectrum on their approach of interacting with the guys, somethingto be gained and to learn from both approaches. But they needed to learn hip hop ain't a novelty that some can pick up and sit it down like they can, not everybody is going to treat them with kid gloves. But yeah...they're definitely perpetrating some stereotypes of hip hop and black men period. The whole big, mad, aggressive black dude should've been a hard pass! If you're going to be doing something learn the history about it. Like we or me as Americans since becoming a fan of BTS has and is taking the time to learn about Kpop, Korea and learning and attending classes to learn Hangul. But trust just because it's not as obvious don't assume that the guys weren't being treated like crap by some of their Korean staff and those in the entertainment industry too. That's exactly why they started their own shows and utilized KZbin to communicate and connect with ARMY.

Welcome to my TED talk against The American Hustle Life, let’s jump right in. I want to ask you a question, in WHAT WORLD- Okay, I’m going to take a breath. Let’s try that again with less caps. In what world do you think pranking seven young guys-who do not understand the language or even know where they are-by pretending to kidnap them is okay? I think this is a logical question. Because that’s exactly what the creators of the American Hustle Life did to BTS on their first day in America. But since this was years ago and the members don’t seem to contain any trauma from it, then I’ll have to accept that it happened. They’re okay and I’ll have to move on even though I think it’s messed up. Next, the Americanization of BTS through editing. (I use the term Americanization in the sense of the belief you don’t have to work hard to be successful) What do I mean by this? I mean knowing the backstory of what’s going on during the filming of this show: recording their Dark and Wild album, staying up late into the night to practice: dancing, singing, and beat boxing, what the show decided to portray of the boys doesn’t match. In fact it seems to go the opposite way, as an audience we are given opening shots to episodes where they are laying around, playing video games, living in a dirty house, generally looking like lazy guys. But that’s not the reality. The reality is that they were working so hard they fell asleep on the floor of the recording studio. The BTS we know now hasn’t changed, they work until exhaustion and then some. But that’s not seen. They are, as I said Americaniazed, made to look like they don’t work hard. But their hard work is one of the most inspiring things about them. Okay, I’m going to take another deep breath. There’s a reason ARMY hate this show and it’s because it shows nothing about the truth of how dedicated BTS is on all levels. I’m not going to mention the one instructor who worked with Jin and Suga and smacked Jin with a stuffed animal. There aren’t enough deep breathes for me not to have to use all caps on that topic. Give credit where credit it do. Okay, some positives. Tony did bond with the guys. Especially Jimin. He was even the person who gave Jimin his nickname: Chimchim. Though I know he faced problems with ARMY later on, when Jimin saw him years after the show he was excited. I say that speaks a lot about how they feel about him. The teachers in the show really did respect and treat the guys well. Even admired them. Warren G. Warren G was extremely kind and I felt created a good relationship with the guys. He even gave them a beat to use, so props to him. On reflection of what I’ve written, I can’t say I loath this show with a fiery passion because I do believe it really played into the changes they made going forward. Also I think it helped solidify that the America idea of hip-hop didn’t fit them. (I could be wrong here but since they remade their entire image in 2015 to a more boy band style, I don’t think I’m far off) The bottom line is BTS is best when they do things their way. Their success has proven this point. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Honestly, they learned a lot of valuable lessons through AHL that you can tell they still carry to this day. But yeah, you can only watch it once because of the stereotypes and disrespect :/

I think you should check out American Hustle Life, but be warned there are parts that are going to piss you off because they are going play into negative stereotypes. As for how some people were acting towards the guys keep in mind it was a reality show and they did have people act a certain way towards the guys for the camera’s. Even with all that going on however there are parts that are great and you really see what the guys got out of this experience and how they applied it to their career!

I totally get what you mean when you spoke about how the vibe of American Hustle Life might have been different with more modern rappers. Or perhaps a mix of the old school and new. Ultimately, I do believe that it was staged reality tv style (just like Scared Straight) to create the narrative of "Look at these young fish-out-of-water rappers who only know rap from afar but don't know TRUE hip hop culture. Watch as we take them through a bootcamp to take them from knowing nothing to knowing all of the basics from the birthplace of hip hop culture....America!" Honestly, to me it looked like Coolio was treating them like they were appropriating black culture by appropriating hip hop culture. Like they made him take the approach that these kids don't know anything, they just see stuff on TV from America, adopted it and are now profiting off of something they don't understand by performing it on a shallow level. Of course we know that, but AHL wasn't just for ARMY. Everyone had access to see it. That seemed like the idea they were going for and they used Coolio as the one to push it. Note that it's only old school gangsta rappers they got for this too. There was an overall vibe they were going for I think. It's almost like they were trying to give BTS some street cred by putting them through this and picking those specific rappers to do it. Even faking a kidnapping and taking them to the rough neighborhoods most Koreans only hear about in media but have never seen first hand. It seemed like they were trying to form some sort of image to make them being hip hip idols be more valid when the new album dropped. As you saw earlier, when they dropped the first album even the media referred to BTS's music as gangster rap in headlines. And they leaned into that image in the way they used to style them too which stood out next to the squeaky clean image of other competing idol groups. Drake would have been too "soft" for the narrative they were going for. In the world of k-pop, hip hop is often used as an aesthetic and sprinkled in for spice. It's often cringy with the idols coming off as posers where you know they don't actually care about hip hop or know anything about it. It was just assigned to them as a role when they were casted and they were trained in it. BTS's rapline called them out on it before too as idols who rap only because they weren't good at singing so they got assigned as the rapper role. I think the AHL and Coolio treatment was the attempt to try to show that BTS is learning from the greats and they know real hip hop culture now blah blah. If you look at their first mini album, you can hear the old school hip hop flavor in it and hear that RM and Suga definitely grew up on those rappers and took inspiration from them. RM's sound especially has a Nas tint on it so it's no surprise to hear him say that Nas is his biggest musical inspiration. It makes sense with the past music and sound that they'd pick older rappers that matched BTS's old school sound in early albums. That show was a whole cringy mess and I hated it but the did learn some good things from it like the lessons on singing, beatboxing and giving back to those less fortunate than yourself. Everything else could go. I get what it was going for but it was still very yikes.

in my opinion i am glad that they did go back to that generation to understand hip hop for what it is. keep in mind that they were not as big as they are now. so access to big stars in 2014 would have been expensive and maybe even ignored. This Also helps with the "cultural Appropriation" hate that they get. there is a huge diffrence between appropriation and appreciation. how can they say they are a hip hop group if they don't understand the black stuggle and the history of hip hop and why it was part of the black movement. they mimck that struggle with the constant pressure and ageism that the youth face in Korea. the discrimination and hate they face from starting as underground to then "selling out" as idols. as much as i don't like AHL i think it doesn't get the credit for the boys and their understanding of the true meaning of hip hop and why it was needed in our communities. How many Kpop or even artist go back to los angels, skid row, or even the east coast to look at the neighborhoods to learn about the struggle behind the lyrcs of the music? i consider this a key factor in their success and the lessons they have learned from skid row is what they still hold on to. never forget where you started , be yourself. that your art.

BTS will tell you American Hustle Life was a dark time in their lives but they learned so so much. The version you watched was severely edited so I suggest watching the whole series on KZbin. This thing with Coolio vs Warren G is quite harsh on Coolio. First of all the whole show was filmed by Mnet but it was a reality show so nothing was scripted and NO one going to tell Coolio how to behave. Coolio is like the stern teacher, much like how his mother or a harsh life probably taught him. I’ve had many “mean” teachers just like him so they often get a bad rap but you know you learn a lot from them. Yes, Coolio could have been nicer but that is not his teaching style and I wish more people could understand and respect him. He was being real, authentic and just himself a really cool guy and a stern, direct mentor. He’s not putting on a show for the cameras and in the end he thought BTS had talent and wished them all the best. Also you know this is not fake because one of the mentors hit Jin with a chicken (lol) and it was a bad enough conflict that they had to let the mentor go. It was more serious than I’m making it out to be but they didn’t expect that to happen. Hope you guys watch the entire show and digest it yourself. Coolio doesn’t deserve the hate he got from some ARMYs.💜
