You are definitely one of the most valuable channels a producer could have.

I always thought your content was miles above what most of BeatTube offers. Now I see where, in part at least, that comes from: you have a jazz culture and appreciation as well. Tony Williams was a genius for sure. Great video, the song sounds really cool!

Thanks for the kind words, and indeed, jazz is always factoring into my musical equation in one way or another. Glad you dug the tune, also, nice word play with "miles" !

You're severely underrated as a musician/producer and educator. Thanks for sharing your perspective and wealth of knowledge with us!

I just found you through your Yussef / Kaytra video. THANK YOU! Seriously keep moving, man. You have a lot to offer and let all of us in the comments be an extra boost. Thank you for all of your knowledge, the production value and execution! Side note - would LOVE to hear / see your thoughts on a synthwave track, inspired by The Midnight : )

I reckon there are two sets of experiences. That of the listener & and the performers/producers. I love hearing about process, but also (and equally) love to create. And I also love the participation of listening to your (and others) work/creations. Sometimes you just want to listen and enjoy something. Others, a deep dive and appreciation of craft.

Absolutely, I had a teacher who would always remind us that you (the music creator [beat maker/composer/performer]) are the first audience/listener. To me that is one of the biggest challenges of music, beginning as a music listener/appreciator/fan, going on the often long journey of learning some part(s) of the musical language/craft, then reconnecting with the original state of being a pure listener. Charlie Parker AKA Bird said it well “First you learn the instrument, then you learn the music, then you forget all that **** and just play.”

@@jaronlopez one interesting thing about dusting off my horn playing chops and _recording everything_ is that I am way more aware of my tone and (for now) lack of consistent diaphragm pressure. Being able to analyse my own playing with minimal hassle is proving very insightful.

I was dissecting coldplay - clocks the other day and noticed the only difference in the drums for the entire track is in the cymbals, their intensity and rhythm.

The element that is missing from programmed drums for me is often the gradual change between fully closed and fully open hi hats. When playing the drums foot pressure on the hat pedal changes the sound so much and by loosening the hat cymbals the hat decay and sizzle between the cymbals is a way to build tension and energy in the beat and when the foot pushes down harder the sound tightens up again. Using only closed, open and pedal samples cant recreate all of the in between stages that allow for fluid expression.

Technically you can just sample multiple different Hihat sounds to get the same effect

Love the interactive cymbal parts. How are you inputting these rhythms into the software? Are you drawing in the notes by hand or are you using drum pads / midi keyboard? Do you do any quantizing on the notes? appreciate the content
