The basis for the pitch assessment should be what the same ground produces for domestic first class cricket, even the Pakistani commentators were lamenting the change that was made for the test series (Aus, Eng, NZ). Leaving that aside, the test pitches Pakistan have been producing are awful (before anyone launches on me, so was that Gabba pitch for the Safety test).

When Root picked a fifer, it was a simple message to English selection committee to pick more spinners. Also, if you can't play seam and swing well, you need to work on your batting. Jarrod said that pitches should not be marked down solely on the basis of the subjective opinion of the match referee - and here the Pindi pitch got 2 demerit points for a time. An earlier video made reference to some sort of data - but if Jarrod will not share much more of the data or his findings - Jarrod is pretty much spit balling as much as the match referee.

Using 80 whatever balls of data to determine fairness of the wicket will add more confusion since the entire data and the computation will be owned and done by only a few people. It will become a bigger black box. Atleast with a referee, you have the bleak chance of redressal. Imagine challenging a decision on a bad pitch on the basis of data you dont have.

PCB do have access to the data. And it's not just 80 balls they check. They've got an entire test match of data to determine how safe the pitch was, which is fair.

The problem is that Rawalpindi doesn't have batter friendly pitches. In domestic cricket, Rawalpindi has green tops usually. But for this test match, all the grass was removed from the pitch and swept aside (normally the grass is minimally rolled into the pitch). I have spent a lot of time making pitches of all kinds. It is clear to every curator at every level in the whole world that this pitch was intentionally made flat. Maybe they wanted to negate James Anderson. But in reality, he got considerable swing and seam, while other bowlers struggled to get any movement whatsoever.

And obtaining results about 'playability' from it OVER human judgement will land us exactly where we already are.Look at it this way- in a single match, analysis of how each ball is behaving makes sense because the bowlers, their strategy and the conditions, point of delivery etc. are known. Now even if we use data from ALL matches, how do you normalize for bowler bounce? How do you normalize for conditions. Not to forget, the margin of error of extra bounce on a pitch to be termed as unplayable and not just favoring the fast bowlers very well could not be more than 5-10 inches. One could say that a decision on the basis of this data will be again based on drawing a discretionary line beyond which there are demerit points may be unfair to attacking fast bowlers at large. This is non conclusive if not outright opaque again.

I feel as though this is part of a wider governance conundrum in cricket - as national boards rise and fall so does the Test game. This means the ICC cannot properly sanction the boards, who (apart from PIG3) are generally extremely fragile, without putting the wider game at risk.

I'm a pakistani and i absolutely love cricket and follow it wherever and whenever i can wether its happening in aus or eng or india or any other t20 league around the world and I absolutely adore pakistan cricket despite its flause and ups and downs BUT tbh watching these two or should i say the THREE test series(against aus, eng and nz) now, the pitches have been just SHIT!! total SHIT!! if we get points on this kind of pitches then its only our fault. if batsmen does'nt decide to absolutely demolish the bowlers like eng did. we're just wasting everyones time with these kind of matches and by "we" i mean everyone everywhere around the world who make these kind of surfaces. let's be honest no ones gonna appreciate a shit show like this where a mediocre batsman comes at no 7 and scores at a sr of 50 or below on a pitch thats absolutely fuckin doing nothing to cause any discomfort. in this case it was (salman agha). by doing this we will be just pushing more and more audience away as no one in their right mind would want to watch a contest over 5 days with nothing happening at all and ends in draw and then goes to do it again in the next match and righly so.
