Spot-on analysis by Jarrod Kimber! Pakistan as a white-ball side are world-class but as a Test team pretty weak. The pitches in Pakistan are dreadful which helped the visiting side more and/or the visiting side adapted perfectly to the conditions: see what Pat Cummins, James Anderson, Ollie Robinson and Pakistan tormentor Ben Stokes did this year. I do appreciate Jarrod citing that Pakistan has a weak middle to lower order, which is correct. But the top order have been more inconsistent at home than away. Furthermore one needs to take twenty wickets to win a Test match, something England has flourished in, while Pakistan is unlucky with failing to read the pitch properly and selecting a suitable bowling outfit. My gripes: - why is Shadab Khan not playing Test Match Cricket? He ought to be a multi format player who can bolster the middle order and be a solid leg spinning option unlike Zahid Mehmood ( who looked out of depth ) - bringing back Hasan Ali as an experienced campaigner is the right way but Pakistan is unlucky with their fast bowling options ( Shaheen, Naseem, Haris Rauf all injured ) - Mohammad Haris introduction during the T20 World Cup should have been a token for his incumbent Test selection, a dynamic player can stabilize the middle order. - I feel Yasir Shah should get one more chance to show his worth and experience on Test level. Look what debutant England lad Rehan Ahmed did last week? - I feel that Babar Azam and coaching staff has gambled on bringing in young fresh players from the first class setup but failed in utilizing them properly and them playing against England who is outperforming EVERY team in all formats now was too risky. - a lot of talk is going on about Babars Captaincy, well yes it lacks depth at Test level, he is no Stokes, but Pakistan do not have a better option at the moment. Perhaps Shaheen will take over once he is fit and consistently playing. - Pakistan need an off spinner and preferably an all rounder off spinner like Mubasir Khan, bleed him early perhaps against NZ if the pitch are rank turners. - Persist with M. Wasim jr if his fitness holds up. I was surprised he had a bad outing in the Karachi Test. - The problem that is Rizwan: Not so much a red ball player, bring him higher up or even open with him. His keeping is average; look how Foakes or even part timer Pope out kept Rizwan! - Pakistan need twenty wickets, so against NZ pick Hasan Ali, Naseem if he is fit, and hope that Abrar and Nauman can spin their way. M. Nawaz looks unsuitable for red ball cricket. - Agha Salman I have still some doubts over especially since he is not used as a bowler. - Saud Shakeel did okay against England and should play Well my Test XI vs New Zealand Abdullah Shafique Imam ul Haq ( if fit ) Babar Azam M. Rizwan Saud Shakeel M. Nawaz/ Agha Salman Hasan Ali Nauman Ali Abrar Ahmed Naseem Shah ( if fit ) / M. Wasim jr Zahid Mehmood My ideal Test XI Abdullah Shafique M. Since 2 years Azhar Ali and Shafiq was close to retiring Yasir Shah lost his game. Hasan Ali and Abbas and Yasir lost form. Amir quit. Riaz is done. Hafeez retired. No Misbah or Younis around. Shaheen injured. Naseem injured repeatedly. Abid Ali who was coming good, had a heart condition. So Babar (who is not actually a good captain btw) had a tough job. He is not wrong that he has a very inexperienced team with new batters and bowlers. They are all capable but will take time. Also Pakistan is trying to fit in bits all rounders rather than just letting Agha and Shakeel handle the 5th bowling. Neither will take wickets but they will take up the bowling burden as well as bat in the middle. 4 specialists. 1 keeper. 6 batters (2 of whom actually bowl regularly in domestic). Get better pitches and back these players to showcase their best game otherwise we will just continue to fall. You dont win by constantly chopping and changing and you dont win by ignoring domestic performers. (Huraira, Mubasir and tahir are next in line but they can wait. )

Pakistan is paying off this result with some craziest decisions made. The biggest mistake which is most expected in subcontinent is handing over captaincy with full rights to the best player performing currently, we have seen the same with Sachin, with Virat, and now with Babar azam. He wasn't actually ready to take that responsibility will his full capacity. Resultantly, he started using that highest position for himself, and chose his close friend in the team rather than deserving players, forgetting that he is not Mahinder Singh Dhoni. So bad selection and blind faith on Babars decisions made PCB and Pakistan pay in the form of losses.

SA cannot bat in tests. They have a great attack (can do with some more control though). I have said it time and again that SA's decline in the last 3-4 years, Pak's decline post Misbah's retirement in 2017 (their bowling except world class Shaheen Afridi is a bit of a joke) and SL's decline since 2015 (have good batters but no standout ones, fast bowlers perennially getting injured and spinners lacking consistency post Herath) have been terrible for test cricket. On top of that India's top 4 are in decline for last 3-4 years and Indian spinners are aging and fast bowlers are perennially injured (and Ind is reluctant to try young, talented top order batters like Jaiswal, Gaikwad, Patidar, Tilak Varma, etc. or even SKY on a rank turner), Aus and Eng are not producing young talented batters (Ben Stokes is a fantastic captain and Harry Brook looks a fine talent but the rest) and NZ bowling is aging as well (NZ have been in decline post WTC win). The less I say about WI the better (except Tegenarine Chanderpaul who looks promising). This has to be unhealthiest test cricket has ever been.

Pakistan, quite frankly, made absolutely stupid decisions in selecting Mohammad Ali over Mohammad Abbas, Haris Rauf over Hassan Ali, Mohammad Nawaz over Yasir Shah etc. An inexperienced bowling attack with a fragile batting order and a feeble captain had disaster written all over it. Plus, with coaches and management people like Ramiz Raja, Saqlain Mushtaq, Mohammad Yousuf, Shaun Tait, Mohammad Wasim, the team has become weak in terms of its mentality and has set a new record of having lost 4 home tests in a row. That's the first time ever in Pakistan's history. Rizwan is slowly beginning to get exposed, Babar is getting worse by the day and what's funny is that most of the Pakistanis I've talked to are still under the impression that their team is better than what it was before.
