I think it’s great if you can feel like you and your *coworkers* have some sort of family. that’s dope, but there is no situation where an employee truly can be, or should be made to feel as though they should be, in that situation with their employer. as a worker you owe your solidarity and your support to your fellow workers. the only thing you owe your employer is the completion of the tasks you agreed to complete, there is no, should be no, and can be no relationship beyond that.

My heart breaks for Jazlyn. 20 years ago, I was in a community theatre production in which the antagonist had a real knife. One night he almost stabbed my hand that was unfortunately resting on a table he was attacking. I thought my late husband, a professional theatre musician, was going to jump out of the audience and rip it away from him. He did rip the director and stage manager new ones. I’ve been terrified of knives ever since.

The first few months after my family discovered dhar man, I saw something very disturbing on an insta live. You could clearly tell he didn't realize he could be heard. Absolutely mind blowing that companies would rather deal with PR nightmares and possibly losing/hemorrhaging funds than doing the right thing to retain their staff. I’m a nurse and not a single for-profit company gives a shit about us, nor do they listen when we want to speak up about the sometimes abhorrent conditions of our workplaces either, and it’s just incredibly sad and disheartening. Especially when you’re a dedicated employee who is just trying to do what you love, or need to do to get by in this wack ass world. He and his company must be confident in this blowing over or like nothing will come of it, and I hope they’re wrong. No one deserves to be traumatized at work. Ugh I can’t stand the way companies work and how utterly selfish and heartless people are. Thanks for coming to my TEDtalk.

For context, I'm a non-union actor and I work for a production company MUCH smaller than Dhar Mann and I make $45/hr with strict shooting hours agreed to about a week before shooting. Acting is fundamentally unstable, and you often don't work a full day, so you either need a holding fee, a day rate, or have a strict shooting schedule so you know how much you're making. $33/hr with none of that is incredibly unethical.

He already has millions of dollars from his videos' excessive revenue. And even if he did need comforting, he has a family, a wife and two children. He doesn't have to rely on those who have arguably stayed loyal to him. He doesn't deserve any respect, and the only reason I watch his videos are to see how cringeworthy and laughable they are.

The thing that makes me the saddest about this whole situation is that the Dhar Mahn channel is the opposite of a jumping-off point for actors... Not only did he deprive them, and waste their time, but it's also going to be almost impossible for them to be taken seriously without making a major move now... A similar thing happened to me when I was younger I took an internship at SoFlo and it deflated what momentum I had found, exhausted my resources, and wasted my time. Took me a few years to recover from the chance I took to be a part of a channel where creativity goes to die.

My friend said I was so mad that Antonio thought I was going to attack him in the bank... thank u for sticking up for actors, jarvis :,) as an actor myself, i got used to poor working conditions ALARMINGLY quickly. i remembered seeing someone complain on twitter about how 10-12 hour work days were unreasonable and inhumane, and i thought "oh my god, this idiot doesn't know anything, that's the industry standard." i scrolled to see if anyone had said that, only to be met with many replies that made me realize that the fact it's standard to have 10-12hr work days IS the PROBLEM. there's no reason to do that !! split up the workload !! and that's just the standard; shoot days can last longer. folks in the union talk about "golden hour," hour 16 of shooting, where you've technically worked two 8hr days so you have to get paid for an extra days' work in addition to all your overtime, but the crew is instructed to get everyone out as fast as possible as hour 16 approaches so they won't have to pay anyone what they're owed. you get worked for 15 hours and 45 minutes, and you don't get that extra pay. if you're non-union, you don't EVER get that extra pay. it's really fucked up.

I was SO disheartened about this situation because prior to finding Jarvis' channel, I primarily watched Dhar Mann videos with my baby brother. The majority of our fun were seeing the same actors over and over, reprise the same roles in every one. Sure the videos were goofy and the writing of how the situations were handled were sometimes alarmingly bad, LOL.. But it was made up for by how genuinely fun a lot of the actors were. So to see our favorites like Rachel, Colin, and Mair (my personal BIG favorite, she carried every video she was in) get treated poorly felt unreal and awful... Learning that they're starting a new channel AND they've met the minimum on their funding goal has made this story SO much better. I wish them all the best!!

About the knife thing: as someone currently in film school and taking production classes, having a real knife instead of a prop knife is a MAJOR no no. Literally safety is supposed to be top priority and we have to jump through a thousand hoops to use fake weapons, as it should be. Not only is it incredibly dangerous and probably several levels of illegal to have an actor RUN with a real weapon, let alone chase another actor. Accidents happen and if either of them tripped it could lead to life changing injuries (death is probably unlikely but if an actor has a facial injury/scar it can affect their livelihood and financial means) and if she had any trauma memories related to someone pulling a knife on her etc, it could’ve given her such a severe panic attack it could have required hospitalization and sedation. I am so so so so SO proud of that girl for leaving. When someone tries to pressure you into something that makes you uncomfortable, please remember you can leave. Exit the situation and always put your safety and comfort first. That flight response is so important yet so overlooked, please listen to your instincts and never let anyone coerce you into staying and complying. Please, as someone who learned that lesson the hard way, look out for yourself

NGL this situation, esp. them forcing actors to set aside multiple days, then only paying them for a few hours of work, almost reminds me of a situation in old-school Hollywood, when Olivia de Haviland sued her contracted movie studio. She was not permitted to do work for other studios without their explicit permission, but they almost entirely gave her small "arm candy" type roles that inhibited her career and didn't pay nearly what a more prominent role would. In fact, some of her biggest parts in that period were when she convinced them to 'loan her out' to other studios. Toward the end of her contract, she started refusing the smaller roles they offered her and was put on a suspension for it. Then, when her contract was set to end, they claimed she owed 6 months of extra time for the 'suspension' period. Her lawsuit was actually a landmark case in Hollywood to benefit the treatment of contractually-obligated actors. I can only assume that the Dhar Mann studio doesn't hire full time actors to get around these sort of obligations to give them rights and benefits. I've seen the same with "adjunct" college teachers who are hired contractually per class and are not considered 'real' employees of the university, so they're paid less and aren't eligible for benefits.

Absolutely loving the worker solidarity. This is the kind of class conscious reporting you can only find on a GOLD channel.

the crew that left creating their own channel reminds me of a lot of buzzfeed creators doing the same thing back in the day, and i'm really happy for them! i hope they get the success they deserve :)

Dude, as a person who's worked in theatre, I don't know with like... videos, but how the FUCK did they allow a REAL ASS WEAPON on set? that's dangerous for numerous reasons, but also, this should be a lawsuit. Dhar Mann should be in jail for this alone.

That’s really sweet that they’re doing something different! I feel like the actors have a lot to offer more than the singular roles Dharr usually had them in so it’ll be nice to see them explore that :)

The optics of that sympathy video are just so gross "It is not possible for Dhar Mann to meet with any of the actors" *Dhar Mann meets with other actors to film weird sympathy video*

This is why union or guild or association solidarity is so important. Millionaires/billionaires/trillionaires do not care about workers, they only care about money.

I loved watching this! Thanks for such a concise and researched update! It’s so frustrating when there’s never any follow ups 😅 Can’t wait to watch the former actors’ videos ❤

I would really like to hear his stance on this, especially considering that he's an apparent "friend."

Yes, I’m so sad that he is friends with them all and ended up avoiding this confrontation instead. I hope he just got pressured or blackmailed or something to not say anything bc if not this sucks.
