I have a strange connection with Frank Zappa and once in a while he enters the room and takes control. I have many many recordings playing in the Lydian and Dorian modes. But only a few where I am willing to say...yep he visited me. I cannot be distracted....and it made me cry. I have felt his presence. I met Frank 4 times on earth. I feel a bit of a connection with Page as well and sharing the same Birthday I think about him every year in January!
@peter-ek3uh7 ай бұрын
Sloppy is not always real "slop".... Page and Zappa were reinventing the solos on the spot.. There has to be no fear. And pushing the limits just goes with terrortory!!! You are bound to go over the cliffs here and there! I record endless blues jams...and each solo is a framed piece of art. Some are slightly iffy and others are...ya know!!😂.. "right there".... Notice the right hand using hybrid picking. That is what makes this song so tricky to play on guitar. And Mr. Jimmy is one of a few people on planet earth who has nailed it. Not EVH, not Hendrix, not Clapton... none of Page's contemporaries had their right hand developed like that. Kudos to Mr. Jimmy!
@garya78939 ай бұрын
Page today or the last 20 years could not play this as good as Mr Jimmy
@lesliegprice66529 ай бұрын
Richard Thompson has a similar technique , but yes that's how good a guitarist he is and this guy's impersonation too !
@simonthoben1899 ай бұрын
Steve Howe of Yes used to do that style of picking as well. You can see it pretty well on live videos of him playing his solo piece 'Clap', but he probably did it all over the Yes catalogue. Always found that style of picking quite fascinating, nice to know that Jimmy did it as well.
@bubnick469 ай бұрын
I am not a guitarist but didn't Roy Clark pick like that?
@Tyrell_Corp20199 ай бұрын
@@bubnick46 Yes. So did Scotty Moore who was Elvis’s guitarist. (one of Page’s biggest influences). Many guitarists used it, particularly in country. But none of his contemporaries in the way that I’m aware of. Maybe Mark Knopfler but he’s a very different player of course. At root, my point is that he’s constantly ragged on as being “sloppy”. It is absolutely nonsense if you understand what he’s doing with his right hand. He’s constantly slurring, picking, bending and scraping like a paintbrush rather than trying to be perfectly clean. (“Economy picking” that came to be popular in the 80s) There’s an old guitarist from the 1950s here on KZbin that I saw years ago. He’s probably gone now. But he talked about how Jimmy used what was called then a “smearing” pattern commonly used by the likes of Chuck Berry, etc. Anyway, I could go on. There are quite a few tunes where he uses hybrid picking that just makes it impossible to play without knowing it. The Song Remains the Same it’s just ridiculously hard.
