Very interesting. The roots of western civilization are not only Graeco-Roman, they are Irano-Graeco-Roman, but this is often forgotten. Because of the constant wars, Iran has often been seen as the "other" - whereas in fact Iranians and Greeks, and later Romans, are part of a cultural continuum. And, of course, they share common roots in the very distant past, something echoed in Greek mythology ( Perseus)

Jorjani does sound biased here, especially considering the potential agenda and I'm saying that as someone who generally appreciates his perspective. If the purpose is an Iranian nationalism, i.e a new re-interpretation of the perceived past, I understand, but don't necessarily agree. Modern Greek (last 200 years) nationalist circles have strived to connect the state and the people of Modern Greece with the Ancients and, by some and at times, the Byzantines. This goes beyond the realm of facts and into the realm of nation-building and the serving of agendas, for better or worse. From my understanding, the Egyptians should have a similar claim (if not greater) according to this argumentation. The Ancients had a demonstrable relationship with the Egyptians, probably much deeper than that with the Persians. I'm basing this on my assumption that the Ancient Greek colonies never emerged far in the mainland, especially around the Levant (controlled by the Semites-Phoenicians) and the Middle East (Armenians, Semites of Mesopotamia, Iranians). We have evidence of colonies in Cyrenaica and even Egypt proper, which could indicate a much higher influence by and to Ancient Egypt compared to Ancient Iran.

This discussion is commensurate with the BiCameral mind theory of Julian Jaynes. I see many parallels- especially Jorjani's opening about the Iliad and the Characters being controlled or possessed by gods for all of their actions. This was pre-present day Human Consciousness and it called Bi-Cameral mind/consciousness where the gods will was communicated to humans thru audio hallucinations.

I read Mr. Jorajani's book "Iranian Leviathan" and unfortunately, he does not show any shreds of evidence about these claims made in the video. It is only speculation. Even some books that he quotes and/or comments as the "Greek Buddha: Pyrrho's Encounter with Early Buddhism in Central Asia" does not present any primary evidence about Siddharta Gautama as Iranian or that the Greeks copied almost all their knowledge from Iran. . I love Iranian culture but we need ever defend and pursue the truth - even if we do not like it. I also read his other books and I love them. Only Iranian Leviathan that most of the arguments are speculation and an intense nationalistic desire to rebuild the Iranian culture.

Well it's not very accurate. According to Solon, Plato, Pythagoras, Herodotus, etc. Greeks studied and adapted more from Egyptian culture than Iranian culture. In regards the Egyptian culture these philosophers wrote directly about this influence and most of them studied in Egypt for 10 to 20 years (in the case of Pythagoras). Otherwise, Dr. Jorjani are making good observations about the influence of Iranian culture - specially in the case of Heraclitus. But, we do not have good scientific proofs about it. We have data about Egyptians. Moreover, there are some intellectuals that also claim that the Indian culture had influenced ancient Greece.

@@hopeprevails3213 Hi Cyrus, yes Persians invaded Egypt. However, the highly Greek intellectuals like Phytaghoras, Solon, Plato, etc. studied with Egyptian priests following a true Egyptian culture. The Greeks knew about the differences between Persian culture and Egyptian. Herodotus made comments about both cultures.

@@nlptrader8320 I agree, Jorjani tends to go little bit too far regarding the legacy of the persians. It is huge, don't get me wrong, but as far as we know, it isn't the *forefather of all other cultures*, rather a significant influencer. My comment was a pseudojoke, which turned out a bit lame, but I appreciate your in depth answer. I still work through Lovers of Sophia, but soon will arrive at Jorjani's other works.

Fascinating..!! What is interesting both countries of Greece and Persia were the leading countries in the region. The downfall of Persia was cause by Islam and Arabs, what happened to Greece? Did it end after the death of Alexander and the division of Greece among Alexander’s officers!?

Heraclitus (Ἡράκλειτος) Herakleitos; ca. 540 bc.Chr.-480 bc. Efeze, Ionia lived half a millennium after the ancient Worship of Artemis in the free Greek City states was known, She is the Patron saint of Corcyra (Corfu) The most northern Island between Albania and Italy far away from Persian conquest She was worshipped At least since the Doric period 1200-1000 bc. And A huge temple dedicated to the godess and her brother Apollo was build on the Island. btw I geus You are not claiming the Amazones to be part of the Persian cavalary? if so I’m interested in sources. So there might have been A similar deity worshipped in Persia but that doesn’t proof where the origin sources from. Many Deity’s where imported adopted between the bronze age civilizations think of Isis that ended up in Rome like Mitra and Bes back in Egypt. etc. etc. So Herakleitos was A subject of the Persian Empire influenced by the conqueror. This very common in occupied countries, tough he Must have been seen as A collaborator by many fellow Ionians unhappy by the colonizer and looked down up on by the free citizens Greeks as A traitor. It is known that colonized or conquered people will often side with the authority in charge; Both Christians and Jewish citizens in the Holy land fought with the Islamic defenders against the invading Christian crusaders. So did the Catholic citizens of the many city’s that where pillaged by the Catholic crusades from the Pope vs the Cathars in Occitania. Would You call the people conquered and subjected by the third Reich Nazis or Germans!? Nothing is Black or White in War. Nations influence each other, there is more then exchange of atrocities during war. Like the Crusades brought A lot of lost and exotic knowledge back to Europe. But let’s not forget these fruits came At A high prize human blood! How can someone state “The Greeks (I think You mean the Greek city states which did not form A nation for long) Stole their knowledge from Persia”?, When most of them where fighting the Persian Empire from being absorbed enslaved by this huge nation....I know history is never black or white, Many ‘Greeks’ fought on the Persian side, either forced As subjects or voluntary as Mercenaries...... Each nation absorbs the cultures from concurring or conquered countries. The Hellenic’s of course adopted much from within their conquered world, Especially from the high civilization of Egypt that of course exchanged culture with the Persian conqueror. But before these nations went to war they seem to have cunning similarity’s that point towards a older source culture that influenced the later nations....Just look at the oldest monuments in Egypt the ones without in-scriptures or decorations, they are perfect and modern scholars are still debating how and who build these.....It is so backward to think Ones own birthplace or race is superior to the next human being, We are all on the same planet and can only survive if we learn and help each other maybe we can reflect on this during the panets lockdown? From A huge admirer of both the ancient Keme (Egypt) Persia and Minoan-Greek-Hellenistic worlds

I could be wrong, but it seems very probable that modern Iranian scholars read the name “Sarmatians” after Greek transcription of Srb-atian. Greek script is very messy about character beta which they quite often read and wright as mi. Also, they regularly introduced some vowel before letter R, being unable to utter word Srb, for example. If you claim that the Scythians and the Sarmatians were Iranian tribes, one would expect at least that you call them by their original names, and not to repeat Greek mistaken pronunciation.
@iranianrenaissance3421
@iranianrenaissance3421 5 жыл бұрын
Dear Neda, Sarmatians and Scythians are significantly present in Shahnameh as سرمتی ها و سکاها According to Shahnameh, the ancestors of the above ethnic groups were brothers of Iraj who was father of the people of Iranian proper. A big portion of Shahnameh contains the story of these ethnic groups. Thus, our sources for their names are not the Greek account. We are referring to their names in the Iranian epic book.

Greeks didn't mention Persian influence so much because Persians were the only ones who could fight the Greeks and even defeat them in battle, so it all boils down to jealousy in the end.
