Bruno is a good captain. What everyone sees on the field is one thing,it’s the fact every player when asked cites Bruno as the funniest, most disciplined supporting player speaks volumes. He speaks several languages so can talk to all players in their native tongue. This is all not including his stats of goals and assists, his work rate and robustness. Utd don’t have anyone that has all that.anyone moaning about Bruno’s arm waving and petulance was too young to see cr7,Keane,Beckham, schmeichal who all were non stop moaners

I grew up in the 60s and there are players from that era who would dominate any team in the modern era - players like Pele and Beckenbauer, the United trio of Charlton, Best and Law. Johan Cruyff from the late 60s and Puskas from the early 60s. Garrincha and Eusebio. The things they could do with the old style leather ball, they would be unplayable with the modern balls.

Good points about academy football. Club's producing standardized players but the ones who rise to the top have key competency in their position. The lack of strikers is clearly down to club's inability to focus on this key position. Italian clubs years ago were mint at it. Batigol & iniesta were some players.

Hi Ste, Totally agree wrt to all players looking alike today. In some sense this could be construed as a 'Johan Cruyff total football' model, where any player can play anywhere. Man City are the nearest embodiment of this IMO, where many of them seem like a set of doppelganger tiki tak midfielders. I don't enjoy watching their side-side crab football though, even though it is clearly effective most of the time in grinding opponents down.

I agree with the point about players today compared to 10-20 years a go. Football has "been worked out" so to speak, and being able to press non-stop for 90 minutes is more important than being an incredible footballer. The skill floor has gone up and the average player has gotten better, but we're really missing out on those stand out players who being their own thing to football - the skill ceiling has reduced. Could be down to the more rigid tactics in play now-a-days, or the players just don't have that individualism to them anymore. You could go back and list loads of players who brought a special something to the team by way of their playing style, even in the middle to bottom table teams. Not so much anymore.

I remember when Maradona played for Napoli, and every week on the sports they showed the highlights of the Italian games. He was getting murdered by the defenders who were twofooting him and doing allsorts to try and keep him quiet. And they got away with it, by the laws of that time. But they sure didn't keep him quiet. He was still able to get away from the defenders and edfensive midfielders enough times to win the scudetto. Imagine what would be able to do today when he would get a free kick on the edge of the box every time he got the ball?

Steve feeling bit Nostalgic today..some of these guys that seem avg today (as noted playing 1v2) would be looked at as legends through glassy eyes had they played back 25 years ago in 1v1s all game. Likewise some of those guys I am not convinced would have been considered on the same level they are now. One thing not considered is the competition, athletic ability, and tactics when comparing. The gaps and time to play by comparison then is miles apart. Press and zonal defense tactics has changed a lot of the game.

So refreshing to actually talk the truth about the state of modern football. Sports science and the Pep philosophy predominate now but this makes for a far more stale product imo. Pisses me off seeing players unable or unwilling to cross a ball from time to time or to pass about the area without having the balls to actually shoot.

Bruno reminds me a lot of Cantona tbh Ste and I used to wonder with my mates if Bruno would be Ole's Cantona. I think the main difference is Cantona always looked flawless, where Bruno will always try something. Cantona had a better eye for when something wasn't on so he made few mistakes but his output would go up and down each match. Bruno is a little less refined but is still the one trying to knit things together. Imagine Bruno knitting Keane/Ince/Hughes or Cole together. Unf. Cantona two foots someone while Bruno has a huge whinge. I agree with Cantona's hold up play being better mind. He'd easily take and lay off a ball into him where Bruno needs a look.

On what planet does someone as rank average as Wilcox get a job like this!? A lot of people here obviously didn't see Ferguson's first few years, or Klopp's, or Arteta's, or even Pep's first 2. There are United players in this squad who are on their SIXTH manager (Rashford), 5th (Mctominay), 4th (Bruno, Lindelof, Maguire)....all these players have been failures for up to a decade! Despite this, Ten Hag in his second season has got 3rd and CL qualification, silverware (Carabao Cup), 2 FA Cup finals, is the quickest ever United manager to 50 PL wins, and has the highest ever United manager win ratio...but people think he's the problem!? Ralph Rangnick told us all that "Open Heart Surgery" was needed, and suggested that 13-14 players needed changing. Jose has said that there are still players there that he wanted to get rid of. Ole has intimated about the problems he had with the squad...yet still people think the position today is Ten Hag's fault. As long as managers are forced to play with the failed players of past managers, this club will continue to fall behind. Rashford, Bruno, Shaw, Maguire, Mctominay, Dalot, Lindelof, Martial, Bissaka.....ALL have to be shown the exit so that a proper culture and style can be built with players who have intelligence and a strong mentality. Even Garnacho has started taking on board the toxic nature of these players! He gets substituted after spending 70 mins running up blind alleys ,then scuttles off the social media to "like" posts criticizing his substitution. No Arsenal, Liverpool, or 115 player would feel entitled enough to do that. Ten Hag, and some of the young players (Mainoo, Kambwala, and Garnacho when he's not being immature) are the only bright spots.
