Indeed, quite surprised too, as Lars said above that a quick google of "Gene Anderson" and you can find this exact trick, "Picto Transpo", and purchase it. There is even a video of Gene doing the routine almost identical to Michael's performance here on Fool Us, although I think Michael's version of the routine was very well done and humorous, but quite surprised that what appears to be such a well known trick in it's exact form by the creator was allowed on as an attempt to fool Penn & Teller. Nothing against Michael, he did a great job with it and it fooled me. Curious now as to how it works but I think from part of the routine Gene does you can see some of what it going on, just not how it's happening.

I would guess there is one thin plastic layer on top of the board he gave to Allison. It already has a red drawing on the back side. He transfers it when he asks Allison to sign the board. The back of the layer will be visible then. That's what you see on 6:13. Then on 6:28, notice how he flips around the board and the envelope a lot. He does so to make the blue drawing to be properly facing forward.

Regarding your therapist question, in the past the stereotype is that only crazy people should see a "shrink". It is becoming more acceptable but I still think it is a little taboo to some people. I myself have seen a therapist, and honestly, I do recommend it to EVERYONE. It's certainly not just for crazy people. Even if you think your mental health is fine, it's not a bad idea at all to go to a therapist to get a "check up", much like you go to a doctor for a physical check up.

I don't know how it works, but I see it's a standard prop, you can even make it yourself once you buy the plans. Not sure why it would be expected to fool P&T with a standard prop. Notice that the end result, especially the drawing of him is a different color and shade than the original picture. Must be some sort of mimeograph (yeah, I"m old, remember the smell of those?) type copy process. That's also why he did not let Allison hold the frames while drawing, probably needed a certain pressure to copy the image.

Calling mental health professions a “shrink” adds to the negative perspective of counselling and psychology, and the preconceptions about the process and what can be achieved. Many of the people that I come in contact with see going for counselling as a sign of weakness (especially men). We are happy to go to a doctor if we have a pain in our body that cannot be explained but resistant to go to see when we have a “pain” in our head / emotional well being.

@@JasonParkerMagic I also felt a bit odd when hearing you say "shrink" and I can't pinpoint why exactly. My best guess would be around the thought of "shrink" being the person where "crazy" people go. The fact that I go to therapy doesn't mean that. I have a completely different perspective on the use of the term shrink. It seems more socially acceptable to say shrink than psychiatrist in most contexts. It's kind of a playful term and in my mind doesn't carry the same negative connotation as psychiatrist. Other people call them therapists, even if that's not always technically accurate. But I will always defer to those who find offense in a term. It is a small kindness easily done to choose my words more carefully.

Yes, I'm an european and I don't like the word 'shrink' being used in this context as well. However, you are totally excused Jason. I believe it's a common expression in the US. I took a few very strong jabs from Life at around 30 years of age. My son was born at the time as well, he is totally fine. I will cut it short! I didn't realise back then, that certain traits in my personality started to appear more. Then, when the hidden pain wasn't materialized yet, I started drinking more. (Alcoholism is not the case). About one year later, when I realized the issue is in me , I looked for some professional advice. I'd been seeing 3 'shrinks' in a row, few times each, all seemed good professionals, but I didn't correspond to their approach. I FELT felt like I knew more. (which I didn't). I gave in to another year of self destruction, while reading a Ton about psychology and mainly personality disorders. I discovered my self that I probably suffer BPD (borderline personality disorder) . And had triggered it to a higher extend, not long before. An year later, I gather the belief to seek for a decent therapist. I was lucky with him. He was initially surprised how come I already know so much terminology and basically we took it from there. The 'shrink's' job is to be your friend while recovering or gaining new skills. Just so you know, most people with personality (emotional) disorders are totally capable as anyone else. They struggle in their own social spectrum and react to emotions differently. I'm about to watch the video now. I only heard, the guy suffered anxiety. While sever and longer anxiety may not seem as A main issue itself, it certainly needs professional support. Ps. Anxiety is more often than not a part of what the disordered people experience "More often than not" should be a US expression. :) did I use it correctly??.

Uh, I guess look like a potato? I could still do stuff then, but if I felt like a potato I'd just want to be underground all the time. Very fun performance! The humor was great, and it was all just really fun. I was suspicious of the way he turned round the frames for the signature. I can't really describe it, but the way he held them and turned them seemed kinda "Tricky." Don't know who Gene Anderson is, so I didn't get what Penn meant. I also didn't really understand what he meant about birds except for the "flap" part. It certainly sounded like code, though. You haven't heard of a scamp before? Guess it's not that common but yeah, it's like an imp, or a scoundrel. The fable sounded like a "nip it in the bud" type lesson. Like you said with the mold, even if it's a small problem, it could become big (fleas don't get big, but they can spread disease)

Look vs. feel... super tough call. If I looked like a potato, I'd feel like one. So I think I'd generally be occupied with gettin' the hell outta Tatertown.
