Rough and smooth picks would make one easier to pull out than the others. Paul reached kind of far back to get the pen, so they were indexed in his jacket. (Penn said he needed an "index" card to keep track of his names.)

Maybe in part 2 of the fable we find out that the man who lost a spade was actually a serial thief who had stolen so many things that he initially forgot it was he who stole the spade from the temple in the first place. Only remembering when he arrived, as the town cryer called out something had been stolen. Hence he decided to go back home again and not hang around for too long. : )

As you said in the video, a different deck is easy to use with rough and smooth textures. But not sure that was exactly used this way here. The blue pic is definitely forced through the box. You can read it on the pen at 4:29 as Teller is writing on the PIC. More than likely this pic had something special like the ability to mark the cards when it touched them which allowed him to see it with his glasses. The number 47 though that is the rough one for me to get here. My guess is he had a few different pens with that number to chose from. Although he did have his left hand down underneath the table when Penn was stating his number outloud. I can imagine a device adding the number 47 on that one pen in his pocket while everything else was pre-printed. Notice he doesn't do a riffle shuffle either. This would allow him to keep a certain group of cards in a certain spot easier as he is shuffling. For reference, used to work as a stage hand in a magic show long ago at Fiesta Texas when I was a kid. Seen all sorts of tricks and am pretty good at breaking them down if. It is part of the reason I like being a software developer :) I just make a different kind of magic.

Paul was trying to play the format of fool us, by giving false answers during the trick, since he wouldn't be allowed to lie at the end of the trick during the question session. I think he was also a little overconfident in Penn and Teller knowing he used normal cards before, and hoping that would help his lie pass. He remained remarkably composed, if a little flustered with Penn's troublesome curiosity about the pen.... Kind of made me wonder if he forgot the focus on the card redirect in the heat of the moment. Pen and Teller are definitely some challenging marks!
@TheNameOfJesus4 жыл бұрын
If you freeze the video at 4:29 you can see the words on the pen, "You selected a blue pick, ...". If you freeze the video at 2:16 you can see exactly 53 cards in this deck (you gotta count the "card corners".) You can also see just after 6:38 that there are still 53 cards in the deck. At 3:34 he hides his left hand for no apparent reason, but I'm sure there's a reason. The joke at 4:49 was to distract Penn from looking at the words on the pen. In fact he reached out at Penn at 4:55 to try to stop him from examining the pen. It's possible that the blue pick was forced, but since he probably "printed" the number 47 on the pen, there's no reason to force the pick colour, so it was probably also a free choice. Indeed since the last word on the first row of words ended in "a", it means the blue pick was indeed a free choice. Think about that. (Hint: in some cases it would have had to be "an".) Had Penn stated at 6:03 that he wanted to change the number, then the pick would have had to have been modified/overwritten. In that case it seems that Penn would have to use the pen in his pocket to overwrite the number. This would have made the trick messy and that may have influenced Penn to not change the number. Had he changed it several parts of the trick would have to have been changed. I consider this question and answer to have been a "force."

Even though a couple magicians have fooled Penn and Teller three times, I still feel like Paul plays the game on a completely different level. I was amazed they figured this trick out and tbh I think they got away with a few slippers. If Paul had asked them to clarify a few things in the routine, I think he would've left the show with a third trophy.
@sevret3134 жыл бұрын
I'm sure Penn and Teller could get quite far just by thinking how they'd do it without seeing any moves. How would you do anything different here? Forcing the pick would be the easiest way to handle this and hiding them in a box under the guise of making it fair was probably an obvious tell for them. The number was covered by just having 52 pens. Printing it during the act would be way too complicated. And they knew how to control the card to the right position, so that was no trouble either. If you're doing the obvious, for a magician, it doesn't matter how clean you're doing it, they will be able to figure it out.

So to the average spectator it will look amazing but to other magicians it makes things very clear.

Just checked the video again. At 6:48, after laying out the "47th" card, he spreads the other "46", with Queen of clubs showing on top. At 6:52, after spreading the remaining cards on top, you can count them and see there are 7, which would make a total of 54 cards in all, so the deck is gaffed.

6:50 When Paul places the remaining cards face up, he places them on top of the other pile of face up cards. Thus is done to hide the number of remaining cards. If the 47th card was the chosen card, there would have been only 5 remaining cards, but he had to hide that there were actually 6 remaining. Penn calls this out when he says "I bet you have more than 50, maybe even more." The Jack of Diamonds was kept aside (selected from a special deck of cards as Penn called out), and placed later into the 47th position into a normal deck of cards, which is normal after he removes the special card.

@eazyplayz86994 жыл бұрын
Listening to Penn's 'Code' talk helps figure out how he did it for the most part. It seems clear that the guitar pick was a force, likely something with how he held the box making it first accessible to Teller's finger. The biggest part is the final part, where Penn refers to an index of 'over 50' to choose from. This is where he is saying that the magician actually has over 50 different pens in his jacket pockets, and chooses the pen based on Penn's number. The pens likely all have the same wording with a blue pick, but a different number at the end. Finally, the rough and smooth deck which is hinted at. Clearly, he lied about it being an unchanged deck, and was aware that he was not going to get away with it, hoping that the other parts of the trick would trick them. This kind of deck lets some cards stick together and helps with maneuvering. I'm guessing this is mostly where the two years of preparation come in, as there was likely some slight of hand and careful deck trickery involved in maneuvering the card to the necessary position.

The group placed that one number on signs that their target would see. One scene I remember was a football player had the number on his jersey. I forget why they wanted him to pick this number. Anywho, its an interesting concept of implanting or forcing a number, work, or object into someone's mind.

It was all pretty obvious as you described it, as for the no 47 card it was when he shuffled the deck, he asked pen if the cards go on the top or bottom, he said top, then he asked teller to cut it or not. If pen said put the cards on the bottom, he simply wouldn't have asked teller about the cut and it would already be in the right position, he could have added any number of extra steps here to change the order again if needed.

Jason,I at once thought the blue pick was forced, but as far as how he got the card to the 47th position?He didn't need to move it to that position, he needed only to palm it off somehow and switch it with the selected card(remember it wasn't revealed straight away)and yes, I also think he did a deck switch, but in any case he could always switch the deck after the trick if they did ask to examine it he would then have that option.I'm not even an amateur magician, but I love to watch the stuff :and if you remove the impossible and move back they time (in the performance) it would be easier than having to pick it you saw it live (no pun intended) what you are left with is the only possible explanation.

think the code of "over 50 pen jokes' indicates that in fact he had that many pens so the number wasn't forced and mayge the pens were rough so he can pick the right prediction pen from his pocket. No Idea how you force a card though...
@SirDrinksAlot4 жыл бұрын
To be honest, I have no idea how this could be a rough&smooth deck with a force and a 52 pen index like Penn said. In my mind, the blue pick can be a force, however, the card is very hard to force. I don't think Paul would be lying about it being a normal deck of cards because he told them that they could examine them. Lastly, he told Penn that he could change his mind about the number. We know form past shows that Penn has no problem changing his mind at any point in the act if the performer gives him the option. At the point where Paul asks him if he wants to change his mind, the pen with the prediction that says "47" on it is in Penn's pocket. If Penn decides to change it to 32 at that point for example, how does he change the prediction, how does he change the position of the card and how does he do those without handling either the pen or the deck more? Also can we talk about how annoying it'd be for Paul to have an index of 52 pens in his pocket? This is a first for me because, instead of being at a loss about how a trick was done because Penn and Teller were wrong, I am at a loss as to how a trick is done as Penn and Teller have predicted it. I honestly believe there was some miscommunication between Paul and Penn there and Paul thought Penn meant something that he didn't. I honestly think Paul had them.

I really hope when you do P&T Jason that you resist that extra step exposing the trick! Secondly, I can't believe that Penn - a fellow performer - would choose 47! I mean, c'mon! We all know that the magician will be counting to the number, and it's such a pain when people choose a number over 40!

Not how uncomfortable Paul gets after he casuallyputs the pen in Penn's jacket pocket and Penn pulls it back out briefly. He didn't want Penn examining that pen.

There are levels of forces, I mean of try to force things to go that way, some are easier, some require a lot of work. So that's why Penn emphasized the force hard in the example with the bass playing. imo. Good trick because it leaves with the doubt of the multiple choices, like "do you wanna change the number", "do you want the cut up or down", there are the extra level of force things to me.

I am not a magician at all, but based on what penn said, I was under the impression that there was "an index of about 52 pen (jokes)"... Under normal circumstances that would obviously refer to cards but I think here maybe it refers to numbers? That's the only way I can think of to allow a change in numbers after the trick is fully setup. (you ask for the pen back to mark out the old number and write in the new and make a swap.)

Paul Gertner is another one of my favorites. I believe that if he hadn't given Penn the pen and showed a prediction, it would have made it a little harder for them to bust him. As far as the pen itself, since he forced the pick and card, he could have 52 pens on him. The only thing that confuses me on that is he gives it to Penn about halfway through the trick and Penn has it in his pocket right as Paul is getting ready to count the cards and gives Penn the option to change his mind, so my guess is if Penn did decide to change his mind, Paul wouldn't have done the pen reveal after all (at the beginning he tells him to pick a number he feels good sticking to, so I guess he hopes he wouldn't change his mind) and just let him find it later lol.

At the beginning, Paul says he knows how Penn and Teller think. I've only see a few episodes, but I don't think Penn has ever changed his mind when offered the opportunity. Also, Penn did pick 47, so saying he did is still true even if Penn later changes his mind.

The card was almost certainly forced. He could only feasibly index one of the three items, and the only thing that couldn’t be forced was the number so that would be the index. My guess is the option to change was a calculated risk, if Penn doesn’t change the trick is that much stronger and if he does change there is a slight of hand planned to swap it out which does add to the risk.

You've made a job about watching KZbin Videos. Fucking Brilliant! The best part is that you're watching magicians watch magicians. Which is twice as "Inception." Best of luck. The Aesop reading is a nice add on.

The cameraman doesn't show the deck switch so we have no idea if Penn and Teller caught that, but if not (while it makes it a more impressive trick for most viewers, they will know for sure after this point) the pen ending (rather than the card reveal) shows it must have all been forced, with an 'index' of pens inside his jacket for the number Penn chose. How he got the card to number 47 is the only bit that I can't work out.

My question is thus. He gave Penn the pen after he had written the #47 on the pick. So theoretically, the pen could have had the number printed on it before it went into his pocket. HOWEVER, he also said that the number could legitimately have been altered. Now, IF Penn wanted to alter the number, would Paul have asked for the pen back, so it could be changed? Because then, sure, he could've changed the printing on the pen (somehow). That's the only way I can see this aspect of the trick working. Otherwise, the pen would've had 47 written on it, while 47 would no longer be the number. Additionally, the cards were spread out, and he counted to 47. Had the number changed, the jack would've had to appear at a different place in the deck. So again, if the number was actually changeable, then the jack appeared into the deck because Gertner put it there covertly. And watching the video, I can't see how he could've. The jack WAS in the 47th position. So maybe Penn and Teller weren't fooled, but I certainly was.

Paul gertner had time from 3:19 to 4:14 like a full minute to print the message on the sharpie marker pen. He must have had a small printer in his jacket. Nobody puts a pen i n lower jacket pocket, they put it in front shirt pocket

whats amazing is how he got the correct number. you can force the pick and card through a gimmick'ed box deck but the number does feel like a free choice. he even asks Penn if he wants to change his number AFTER Penn has the pen. so if Penn had changed his number for whatever reason i am curious how the correct number would have appeared on the pen.
