I use to be a Calvus breeder. I would bring in wild caughts and breed them to sell F1 fry from them. I had a huge operation breeding thousands of Calvus. When covid hit, I couldn’t sell any and was stuck with around a thousand left that I couldn’t give away. It was fun but I would never breed Calvus again due to the fact that I can’t move them like I use to. Now I breed and sell simple plecos, guppies and shrimp.
@JasonsCichlids Жыл бұрын
Wow that's pretty crazy. You're the second person to mention not being able to move calvus. Must have been really disheartening to have so many beautiful fish and not being able to move them on. Nice alternative though, a little bit easier and much more in demand!
@EastCoastPGS Жыл бұрын
@@JasonsCichlids Yeah it was disheartening because they were absolutely beautiful. I love Calvus, it’s my favorite fish. Nothing better than having a tank full of calvus. Id love to keep them again in the future but who knows.

The only request I have would be for the two of you going LIVE !!! Talking about the best hobby w/ no worries= no pressure just something I know you two are quite knowledgeable and it's not even Who you are talking to live but there is no doubt that for many years these translate into the videos that get into the algorithm and I just have a feeling that it's something you two would have loads of fun ... Think about it 🤔 time is nothing but a lot of different days and the ones that have the most time are the TWO FISH BREEDERS coming soon !!!! Hi Jason...since youre an expert in Calvus.....how often to give frozen foods to Calvus?? What are the best frozen foods for them??
@anthonystratton4941 Жыл бұрын
Do you mind some advice from an old Tangy keeper? Unless you have a wholesaler you sell calvus to dump them. For your lelupi you will sell lots of fish and have lots if you keep 2 males and 4 to 6 females. Use ceramic caves for the spawn. With your furcifer, they really need a species only tank maybe some cyps or if you can find them Lamprichthys. When I kept Purple Foai Mbete my girls preferred my hand to swim into when it was time to release fry much more than being scared over a net. For all of your mouthbrooders go buy some pilsner glasses with the taper. Set the glass in a 10 gallon tank and get a pump with a valve on it to regulate how much circulation the eggs are swirled in. Gentle barely moving is best. Enjoy the hobby!

Cheers for the advice. It's funny you say that about calvus! They are my best seller!! I do have a wholesaler but they want them for far too cheap. I'm easily able to keep up with the demand with the rate they spawn and grow at just by selling to my local fish shop and cichlid club. As for the leleupi the opposite is true, they breed so frequently I am able to sell them to the wholesaler for a decent price. Just wondering where you are located where calvus aren't worth much that you need to dump them? Because they are highly sort after in Australia!

Aw, that explains it, I"m in California. We did those about 20 yrs ago, briefly. And Compressiceps were the deal then. I grew fish for an international dealer. The dealer was a guy named Dick Strever. His fish boy was a guy named Mark Smith. The new "name" for Julidchromis Regani "marksmithii" ( from Kilpilli). Most lelupi you saw on a cover of magazines were mine. I am almost convinced to start another Tang tank. I want Lamprichthys, a Ventralis M'toto, but that is a dream. I had C. Foai Mbete Purple that used to come to spit their fry in my hand, and some Orange spot eret on the bottom. @@JasonsCichlids

There might be two different shells as I always hear those type of shells called TUN shells? 🐚

I agree about the natural instinct to raise fry. If people keep pulling the young there will be generations of fish who are going to be rubbish parents which will have a knock on effect in the hobby at some point, IMO! Glad you let them mature and learn. Good to see you back.
@JasonsCichlids Жыл бұрын
Glad there are others out there who have considered this. Can't see how the practice would not have an effect on fish after several generations. Thanks mate, glad to have a video out for you guys.

Love this fishroom. Curious if you have preferred types of substrate and rocks for helping buffer tanganyika water with the higher magnesium content and ph?
@JasonsCichlids9 ай бұрын
Thank you so much. I prefer fine crushed coral sand and black/grey slate. But crushed coral sand is too expensive for me and the amount of tanks I have. And I just prefer the look of black/grey slate, not that that buffers the water much.

Hello man good to see you again ❤❤ i fall in love with Tanganyikan cichlid watching your videos . One year ago i bought julidochromis" marlieri " 7 babys now i have 2 adult female and 3 males keeping in species'only tank 80cm by 50cm by 30 cm "abig shallow ..but only one active pair with multiple spawns "different generations but it came from the same pair who dominate the tank with cave works , the other female and 2 males are just bushed in other corner of the tank My question is? Can two pairs of julidochromis marlieri spwan in same tank or the aggression from the dominant pair cannot let that happen? And can the bound between my current pair brock because of the other female cos i see the father go and flirt some times 😂😂with the mom beating the mistress 😅🖐🏻 Appreciate if you respond ❤❤

What PH level to keep this fish? Did I need add coral chips?
@JasonsCichlids9 ай бұрын
I hardly test my paramters but last I checked pH was at 7.8. I don't add any coral chips/sand/texas rock and the fish are still breeding like mad 👍

More flow can stop the cyano - This is a nice video - but very long. Editing down each tanks info - to half or better - you'll get a lot more views. Only hard core folks are likely to watch the whole thing. - after a while it sounds like blau blau blau.

Thanks, can't make everyone happy unfortunately. It's been around 4 months since my last video. Felt it only fair to give all my subsequent a long one to kinda make up for it.
