Welcome to another jon boat to bass boat build from #brigadeboats . In this video I will show from start to finish how I took a bare aluminum 14 foot jon boat and turned it into a tiny fishing machine!
This video features footage of the full jon boat build from first paint to the final carpet. You'll find info on paint, aluminum framing, wiring a boat, cutting decking and hatches, bass boat carpet, installing a trolling motor, mounting decking and hatches, battery installation, and much much more!
The video shows a majority of the work with voice overs explaining the process. I also show the tools and materials needed to make it happen.

I just did a deck on my jon boat. Used 1/8th inch thick marine grade aluminum, 4'x8' sheet is only $150 at the local metal shop in NJ. It's not that bad. The little extra spent on lighter materials means the world on jons, especially in hp restricted lakes.

i know you wrote this 2yrs ago. i just went to my local metal recycling/scrap/metal supplier today and they wanted $400 for a 1/8x4x8 aluminum! i picked up 2 used road signs thatll be plenty for what i want to do... $45, with some tubing and angle for supports

Dumb question but if the drain valve for the live we’ll just comes out the drain port of the boat can’t water just get back in there with the tube just being shoved through it or is that drain port plugged and it’s removed when you go to drain the livewell?

The drain tube for the livewell runs to back of boat and is a few inches longer than transom plug hole. The transom is plugged in water and water tight. When on the water you can use the livewell recirculation pump to pump out almost all water in the lake or parking lot. The last inch of water has to be manually drained out of the water. This is because the recirculation pump is side mounted and has to be elevated an inch from the bottom of livewell to fit the mesh screen. You pull the transom plug, slide the hose through the plug hole, then unplug the livewell bottom drain. This drains remaining water. Sorry if I didn't demonstrate it clear enough in video. It's not ideal but with a 14ft boat with 10 inches height to work with, traditional livewell fittings and systems do not work well with no bottom clearance. This was just a solution I came up with to fully get the water out without dumping it in the boat, which believe it or not, ive seen guys do.

Really nice work and the outcome looks absolutly fantastic. I got one question though. Are you not concerned about corrosion when you use stainless steel screws with the aluminum off the boat and your construction?

That's what i want to know. A lot of guys use them and i always heard not to use them with aluminum. My boat build is gonna be used in salt also so i don't know another option other than stainless but the salt would obviously promote more corrosion. I'm surprised no one has seem to answer any questions about stainless in aluminum yet but i'm curious if it's not that big of a deal

What length trolling motor shaft are people using for the 14 36 builds. I tend to lean towards a shorter shaft cause of trees and rocks in our lakes in rivers but I don’t know the minimum I can run.

I did this on a vintage DeSoto 14' jon boat back in '94. I wired for lights using telephone station wire and outdoors telephone jacks. All my lights were tipped with telephone jack connectors, so all you did was just plug them in and voila! I put a LOUD piezo horn on it just for fun to send a message to inconsiderate boaters. I painted it tobacco gold and the little 6hp Evinrude was John Deere green. I purchased John Deere decals and found John Deere medallions from old lawn mowers to "convert" the Evinrude to John Deere. I had to add a Dol-Fin elevator wing to the motor so it would plane out. It came out beautifully and I received a ton of compliments, but the best part was how well the little boat performed. I could run for most of the summer on a tank of fuel and it was surprisingly stable to fish from. I miss the little boat. One guy said, "I didn't know John Deere made boats!" Without a blink, I told him there were catfish and crawdad farms in Louisiana. Fish on!

Haha yeah man I do...It's quite ridiculous actually. Over 150 hours. I target 120 hours for full builds but I honestly underestimated the framing time frame. And let's not forget, I'm still learning. I could have simplified some things but then again, that's no fun. Appreciate the support!!

a 10 ft by 12 inch sheet of real carbon fiber is actally $32... and adds about $2000 instead of that vynil gharbage

maybe tiny twill from eBay in raw fabric. Not finished sheet. But even at that, the fabric I'd use from uscomposites.com is far from 32$, and then you need resin, sanding, clear coat, etc. I'm not trying to spend 60 hrs for cockpit walls. A dude is just going to scuff and scratch up after a few fish flop around. Before I got into boats, I built a few show cars. Tons of custom carbon fiber interior components, custom widebodies, etc. I know what it takes to do it how I'd want to do it, and unfortunately, for a project like this, it's not worth the input. On another note, the 3M carbon vinyl is very good quality, i wouldn't consider it garbage at all unless you're comparing it to real carbon fiber from a strictly aesthetics standpoint.

No. Still not even 10k in this but i understand what your saying. If thats your stance, your missing the point. I could restore a beautiful classic mustang and put more into it than going and buying a new one. Doesn't matter..Custom is custom and there's a huge market for custom work opposed to a not well thought out or put together boat that is mass produced. Ive ripped enough Basstrackers apart to know!
