I saw your reaction to Hoist the Colours so I decided to watch this one too. I LOVE watching people who discover VoicePlay for the first time! Let me introduce you to our favorite guys, left to right: As you already know, Geoff Castellucci is the amazing human subwoofer with the mind boggling 5 octave range and perfect hair. He does about half the arranging for the group and also has his own solo channel. J. None ..(former full member but currently in the navy...he guests with them whenever he can) absolutely beautiful R&B baritone voice. Eli (pronounced "Elly) Jacobsn (the little bald rockstar tenor that can hit notes that melt your brain. Superstar talent! (Also does occasional arranging...see "Creep" ..their Radiohead cover! And most, if not all, of the lighting for their videos.) Cesar De La Rosa...(newest member, the baby of the group! Absolutely soul-wrenching baritone/tenor with so much emotion in his voice. Can break your heart in one song and fix it with all his sassiness in the next) and last but not least, Layne Stein...(Vocal percussion beat-boxing voodoo that makes sounds no human should be capable of! Does about half the arranging, and other behind the scenes magic...plus he plays a mean violin! ) That's the guys! If you watch enough videos you will see that there have been lineup changes over the past few years. Most notably Earl Elkins who left the group in the past couple of years and everyone misses his ridiculously high tenor voice :( Enjoy your trip down the Voiceplay rabbit-hole!

The best boxer used to be their baritone, but took over beat boxing when Scott left for acting in Hollywood. It's a treat to hear Layne sing now! 🤗

Geoff is as impressive as a human bass guitar as he is singing. And of course an arranger, film-maker and editor. Fans are usually known as VoicePlayers, as you surmised. Layne, now known as Violayne, first showed us his skills on the violin in Warriros. He's played since the age of 4 I believe.

Congrats on 6k!! This is one of my all time favorite Voiceplay songs out there and I'm glad you got to it so early in your journey so that you can listen to it freely! It is absolutely gorgeous, and so very well arranged (props to Geoff on that one). All of their videos have details in the description, so it might help you to look there for more info before or after watching!

Their cover of the Halo theme (from the game) is truly epic! Always watch their videos to the very end, as often there is content after the music is done. The Halo Theme most pointedly.
@jamescurfman328411 ай бұрын
100% agreement about watching to the very end! ESPECIALLY for the Halo Theme! There are videos on YT (not just VoicePlay videos) where it is REALLY IMPORTANT to watch the entire thing. I hate it when reactors don't see the end and then they have questions (which were answered in the small parts of videos that they skipped). The Outro for Frog Leap Studios' Leo Moracchioli's cover of Toto's song 'Africa' is probably THE SINGLE GREATEST music-filled outro on YT. I have un-subbed from reactors for skipping over that. The tail end of Sabaton's 'Christmas Truce' is another one that gets cut off and then the reactors miss something truly incredible. In Daryl Ong's video where BuDaKhel and Katrina Velarde cover Boys II Men and Mariah Carey, the tail end of the video is the part where the performers introduce themselves and their channels. That gets skipped over way too often and then reactors want to know who they just watched... I am sure there are other examples but those three (and the Halo Theme) are just off the top of my head because it bothers me so much when people skip over that stuff. lol

VoicePlayas or VoicePlayers (my preference). I find this so stunning, they did it right at my birthday so feel like it's a spectacular gift. Congrats on the 6K and remember that as long as you are doing VoicePlay you will have all the fans. Try out their apocalyptic trilogy - Warriors (Imagine Dragons) with both J None and Layne (moreso) on violins. It is the 2 times they've done instruments in 3 yrs, Dream On (Aerosmith) J None is not on loan from the US Navy for this one (Omar Cardona is doing the honors, and Seven Nation Army (White Stripes) again J is at this day job in Washington DC but Anthony Gargiula (Gar - jewl' la) is the featured vocalist. The other 2 videos In the Air Tonight (Phil Colllins) and Creep (RadioHead) and for dessert try Drunken Sailor or In The Hall of the Mountain King.

VioLayne strikes again! In addition to beatboxing like a madman, he's a classically trained violinist, arranges many of VoicePlay's songs, co-owns and makes music videos out of PattyCake Productions (where these guys also film many of their videos,) _and_ sings a lovely baritone. But the only other VoicePlay video in which he's played the violin to date is their cover of Warriors.
@n3v3r.MoR3.84 Жыл бұрын
He played violin for fifteen years and Geoff is the one who taught him the basics of beatboxing. There are some videos of Voiceplays that you can catch Geoff beatboxing.
@janetdw Жыл бұрын
One of my favorites is the one where Geoff and Earl sang Death of a Bachelor, covering all five parts. In that one Geoff is the beatboxer. You can also find (if you really look) some footage when Geoff and Earl were the singing train conductors at Disney and he beat boxes and is also the bass in that - because they only had four train conductors in that group.

There is a lot of cross overs among the Voiceplay, Home Free and Pentatonix fan groups so it can be kinda hard to coin an exact nickname for everyone. I think the biggest thing we ask is no comparison among the groups, of like who is better, they all bring something different to the table. Layne (aka VioLyne) has actually been playing violin since he was 4. He claimed on a recent interview he's not as good as he used to be because he doesn't practice every day, but he definitely better then I ever was or will be. This is only the second time he's pulled out the violin for us. The first time was for Warriors (another must watch, and part of their post apoplectic set. The other two currently being Dream On and Seven Nation Army).😁 FYI Geoff actually arranged this one and it has broken countless reactors

Be sure to watch a Voiceplay or Geoff Castellucci vid to the very end. They often add extra stuff in the outtro. Don't forget to check out Geoff's own channel, where you can see his stunning range. As low as he goes, he can also sing tenor. My favorite Voiceplay epic videos: Hellfire (Hunchback of Notre Dam), My Mother Told Me, Dragonborn Comes, Halo, Valhalla Calling, In the Hall of the Mountain King, Seven Nation Army, Enemy, Warriors, Carry on My Wayward Son.

Being a Metallica fan, you'd love VoicePlay's acapella cover of 'Whiskey in the Jar', the one where Metallica's video was a wild house party while they were singing this old 1700s Irish folk song (Thin Lizzy also covered it). VoicePlay captures the feel of the Metallica arrangement, without the house party, but it slaps hard!

You have reacted to two huge blockbusters right off the bat. For something a little more traditional I’d like to suggest their cover of Tennessee Whiskey or Can’t Help Falling in Love. They are both very heavy on the harmonies. It’s a more traditional style of a cappella singing where they are just sitting and singing. J is in both of those, as he was still a permanent member. Those both also have Earl who was with them from the inception of the group back in 1997 all the way through 2020. They have always used guest artists, but starting in 2021 when J left they have relied on a guest artist to fill the fifth slot that is still open. Geoff, Layne (beatboxer) and Earl, their prior high tenor, met in middle school and started singing competitively in high school. They started a group under a different name and performed through about 2009. In 2009 Scott Porter who had been the beatboxer left to pursue an acting career and Layne switched from baritone to beatboxing. That is when Tony Wakim came in as baritone and remained with them till 2017. Then J joined in as baritone. In 2020, Earl left leaving the high tenor spot open. Since then Eli has expanded his range and gets help from occasional guest artist who can also sing really really high. In 2021 J was approached by the Navy to sing with them and is about halfway through his five year hitch. His slot was taken by Cesar de la Rosa who is still with them. But whenever he can he flies home to do a number with them. In most of the videos where they have a guest artist, they will place them in the middle. Jose was in the back in Hoist the Colours. But in this cover, Eli was seated in the middle and I believe it’s because J is still sort of a regular member of the group and most of the lead vocals came from Eli.

It's funny you said your top Metallica song is Enter Sandman - I once ran an entire Werewolf game loosely based on and heavily inspired by the lyrics to Enter Sandman. I had a coworker that would ride to work with me around that time and it ended up playing almost every time they rode with me. 🤣

This was great! If you want to see something else amazing along the same genre you should check out their Dream On cover. If you want something completely different more of a musical comedy routine with great timing you should watch their video Road Trip. It is one of my favorites. It is also a professional recording of them live on the Sing Off! tour so it gives you an idea of what they would sound like live. It is an older video so Eli, Layne, & Geoff are the only members from the current line up that were in the group then but it is definitely worth a listen to.
