I'm a truck driver and my pitbull and cat ride in the truck with me all over the USA. The cat loves it. He got out a half dozen times in Wyoming, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Maine without me knowing. He always comes back to the truck and meows at the door to come back in. He's going on 13 years old and has been riding in a truck for nearly 13 years already.

About 10 years ago, I was living out in the desert and a windstorm damaged my 'cat proof' fence allowing one of my cats to get out. This was an area full of coyotes, so I feared the worst when she didn't return. I went out calling for her every day and night for two weeks and finally lost hope, certain she had been eaten. One day I was working out in the yard and saw her off in the distance. I shrieked with joy as she literally leaped into my arms, trembling, wild eyed and completely emaciated. It is my theory that while she was out that first day, she was chased by a coyote and somehow managed to escape it but was too afraid to leave her hiding place until starvation finally drove her out and brought her home. I never experienced so much relief and gratitude and elation upon seeing her again. She fattened up quickly upon her return and has never left my side since.

Back in the 1990's we were traveling frequently between two home locations, about a two-hour drive. One day after a trip in the car the cat just rocketed away. We thought he was gone for good, as he didn't come back after several days and weeks. Then one day, 5 years later, a stray cat came in the yard. All beaten up, tired, dirty and hungry. He greeted us passionately as if he knew old family. It was the same cat.

One day I was taking them to their adopters, one of them somehow opened the basket he was in and ran away, we were 2 kilometres away from my house and it was a busy highway, I thought I lost him. But the kitten came to my house after 5 days. My family and I were so shocked and pleasantly surprised that a small kitten like him was able to find his way back home even though he had never seen that road/path before getting lost and he was in a basket on my scooter so couldn't have left his smell on the road

Making sure your cat is spayed and neutered is a big step towards stopping a cat wandering or from running away. A cat who is s desexed (spayed/neutered) is more likely to stay within their boundaries and not go far. It also helps prevent unwanted kittens being born.🐈‍⬛😻

My late cat was a good boy. He had a huge backyard to explore in, and it provided much stimuli. He also liked going under the house. I have a gate that I never closed but he had no interest in walking off the property. He knew everything he needed was at home. I think he was a bit of a homebody and wasn't very adventurous.

My kitty disappeared for 10 days. I thot I'd never see her again, she'd never done that before. When she finally returned she was terribly thin and weak. I believe she went into a neighbors garage and was accidently locked in. Once she was able to leave she came straight home. Cats are known to be fatally curious so if they find a nice new dark place to play or hunt they'll check it out. Thanks for the video and you're right, you'll probly keep your cat longer if it's fixed.

I took a cat back in 2007. A few years old already when we met, he likes to hang out in the balcony because it's cool there. Since it's hot whenever I return home, I also hang out there. If he backs off when I approach, I just stop. Then he's the one who starts to approach after days of hanging out there together. We started just like that. We eat together, we hang out together, we sleep together. Hell, he even wakes me up when I need to go. I knew I found my best buddy in the form of a cat. Five years later, he simply left. No goodbyes. No neighbors saw him. No more midnight visits. Nothing. He left just as suddenly as he arrived, as if saying he's finally done with his job of staying with me in my darkest times.

Some more tips for when a cat gets lost to help it find its way home again is to hang up worn laundry, front and back doors, gate post, and on the line, as they can smell home from miles away! Also, do a 3am walk with strong smelling roast chicken, calling their name gently on the walk away from home, and listening for a reply, and then more loudly on the way back home, so they can follow the sound back towards home, instead of away from it. Definitely door knocking, and flyers, as not everyone is on social media! Give a photo to vets and shelters too, as sometimes people's perceptions vary, and therefore also their descriptions of an animal, eg if its coat is brown or black - don't want to miss being reunited due to a misunderstanding!

I've been whistling while I take short strolls with my cats for years. I've always varied the songs. Sometimes it's not a song, just whistling jingles and notes. The point was to make them recognize ME whistling so I wouldn't have to use any of the tricks like chicken etc... With a whistle and my voice calling they KNOW it's me, and a whistle at night can really carry without waking people. Plus, the sound is ingrained in the cats like a Pavlovian reaction. A number of people have told me my cats act like dogs, but it's just because they react to my whistle. If they even get a hint of it, it gets their attention and they focus right in on it. It's well worth the time and effort to instill certain reactions in your cat, and it isn't as hard as it may sound. This is mostly daily repetition, adding the whistle to feeding time, and training from kittenhood onward using their instincts to reinforce your lessons.

Ours "freaked out" after moving to another state. Without getting into a LONG story. We got "Brooke" when she was about 4years old. Previous human had too many cats and had to thin out the number. But she seemed happy for the 5 years we had her. If anything, she was a reserved cat (didn't chase lasers, didn't "play" as much as our other cat. Anyway, we moved 1000 miles. She wasn't at her new home more then 10 hours. Escaped out the front door when I was looking at the front porch lights. I did not even leave the view of the door and never seen her sneak out and POOF, gone. Noticed her missing not even 20 minutes after she escaped. Started looking, calling her, left a T-Shirt that I had been wearing, while looking for her (sweating/smelly) in the woods behind our home. Drove around, calling her, etc. We never found her. She has claws front and back. We think she was outdoors when she was with her other human, but we treated her like a queen. She got whatever she wanted, was very picky for food and even water (she normally only drank filtered water from a special bowl). She's chipped, we put her missing on local pet sites, spread the word with our small sub. Sad thing is, our other cat doesn't even miss her. I think he likes being the ONLY cat anyway. But here it is, over 2 months later and she still has not returned. There are a few "neighborhood" cats running around (at least 3 are feral) but we live out in the country in a small subdivision with lots of ponds and woods. We hoped she found a new home or someone will take her in and the vet will see that she belongs to someone else when they scan her chip. If anything, it's the not knowing that is the hardest. We don't care if she's with someone else and is happy, but if she died, closure would be better then nothing.

At 1st I said no but then I saw them and fell in love. I am content again even when 1 of them (despite my best efforts) uses my bed as her wee box. I just sigh and start a wash cycle! 😪

My next door neibourgh 's cat decided to leave his house and live with us instead because his owner would go to work all day long and on top of that he would go out in the evening as he was a batchelor. The cat Philips would enter my house through the flap door, we would take him to his garden but he would come again and again. Then he would sit in my son lap and both of them would watch tv. A long time passed and one day my batchelor neighbour with a New girl friend rung the bell so i open the door and he said, " i just come to get Philips my cat ,i said we keep putting him in your garden but he comes back ". " well come in" so i took him to the living room and there was Philips on my son lap watching tv and snoring my neighbour went red of shame and said to my son " you can have it son i haven't been a good master to him i don't deserv to have a pet". 10 years have passed and one Day a man aproach me and said. "How is Philips and i said he is still with my teneeage son" my son stay with Philips the cat till he die of old age.

Reminds me of when I was little a cat suddenly showed up... we gave her some dry food and eventually found the owner which lived like a 2-3 kilometers away or something... well the cat kept returning as she decided that living with small kids and getting dry food was preferable to being pampered but stuck with a bunch of other cats. So the owner eventually gave up and we kept the cat.

My cat, Artemis ran away for 24 hours. Normally she doesn't go far and says within a few houses and wants back in within an hour. I tried looking for her all night and finally tried to get some sleep at 1 am. I woke up at 6 am to go looking again and there she was in her spot on our front lawn. Still have no idea where she went. I swear I checked all the near by houses (even knocked on their doors) she was no where to be found. But like magic she reappeared. She looks a lot like my neighbors cat so I think she had an unintended sleep over. Her brother Apollo will go on adventures. I highly recommend GPS trackers. We've used them ever since and have had no issues.

what is a GPS tracker is that similar to the actual map that we use to find places also if the building is only 2 floors and on the bottom it's safe for the cat and the door that would lead outside is closed it is safe but the cat won't run away the house is small and down there it would be safe

My grandma's cat disappeared one day and just never came back. Five years later it returned to her old apartment! She had moved to a different, larger unit across the yard so she scooped him up and brought him home again. He was older and a bit more broken down and never left again. He was with her and her new cat for another five or six years before he died of old age.

Had a cat disappear on me too. My father was sick and required hospitalization and I accompanied him because it was far from our home. The cat, of course, stayed home with three other people, so she (the cat) was perfectly looked-after, but I think I had a special bond with her. She usually let only me pet her and I spent the most time with her. But I was away with my father for 3 weeks, during which time the cat went away (she had free access to both indoors and outdoors), spent away a week, then returned once home and then disappeared forever. People said that she went out to look for me, didn't find me, so she checked home again, and when I wasn't there either, she just went on with her life. I'll never know if that was the case, I'll never know where she ended up and how she was doing, but I cried a lot for her loss and hope to this day that she lived out the rest of her life just the way she wanted. Also, if she did indeed left because I was no longer there, I hope she didn't feel abandoned and betrayed, and if she did, that she quickly forgot about me, or perhaps forgave me. She was really special to me. Gave me 6 beautiful and healthy kittens to my very birthday. Without exaggerating, that day was one of the happiest days of my life so far.

I live on the 5th floor on a seven floor building in Nice. France two streets from the beach. I got two male siblings French Chartreux one year between. Both of them neutered at six month. However, the older one is trouble maker and super intelligent. He likes to climb the balcony rails and run to the neighbors to play with their plants. He fell twice from the 5th floor and survived. One time he ran from the front door and disappeared for full 19 hours. I almost gave up on him after putting posters all around my neighborhood. Finally my wife asked me to check again after midnight. I found him sitting in a small electric outlet room on the 7th floor. He learned his lesson and never ran away. Regarding climbing the balconies which I have on both sides of my apartment, I purchased sharp anti bird spikes. He tried to climb again but the pain was so severe. He stopped his bad habit completely. Please do what I did if you live in apartment building.

One time, in 2021, my cat Cordelia ran away during our vacation. The bathroom window was open but the screen was closed, but there was a tear in the screen that we think she jumped through. We had to leave from vacation then come back, she was gone for 13 days. Nearly two weeks. I was a thousand times more scared for Cordelia than I let on. My mom had bought cat traps to try and find Cordelia. We put up posters. We even went on a lost pet website. Finally, in the middle of the night, on the 13th day of Cordelia being missing, I woke up, and I woke mom up to check the trap outside our door, the trap had a blanket over it, and when mom checked it… there she was, our little Cordelia. We were to relieved to see her again, I can’t even put it in words. The funny thing is, we also got a cat the night after when we went to dinner on the way back home. Malcolm and his three siblings had lost there mother and were eating scraps at a hotel’s restaurant. We adopted Malcolm. And now we are very happy.

I grew up in Bangladesh and had my first cat was when I was 5 or 6.. she was looking for a warm home on a cold winter morning and found her way into our porch. my parents kept her for me (I loved animals since I was a baby) and she was amazing; didn't know about genders back then so I just named her Tommy. A few years later we moved and this time lived up on a 3rd floor (as opposed to 1st floor); she was always an indoor-outdoor cat, and I don't know if my parents knew about litterbox (probably not this was early-mid 90s Bangladesh, having pets were rare, and even more rare was taking care of them properly). but I was horrified to find out they let her out through windows, she would hop from one sun-shed to another and somehow go around and down the building and yet come back. I kept feeling something was wrong with this but my parents wouldn't listen they let her do her thing being indoor-outdoor. After a while she started throwing up or pooping around the house and my parents decided to get rid of her; obviously i was crying and protesting so they did it while i was asleep. apparently someone put her in a sack so she couldn't find out where they were going, took her to a random spot and let her out so she can live but never come back. i still remember how much i cried all day, all night; this was the first feeling of betrayal i felt from my parents as a child, really started looking at them differently. but somehow two nights later, still crying myself to sleep then i thought what was a dream, she was licking my face; purring and she was all dirty, covered with dirt, wet, but she was there... it wasn't a dream, somehow through a city of millions, she found her way back to me. my grandma was living with us at that time, and she told my dad that it wouldn't be right to throw her away a second time since she somehow found her way back from miles and miles away. they kept her this time. but then i can't remember what happened to her again. maybe it's my PTSD blocking the memory of losing her again. and knowing my parents, she probably pooped or threw up again and they got rid of her. I hope her spirit found its way to cat heaven. Tommy was my first cat and I wish my parents were better with her. Cats are amazing creatures, they're often a direct reflection of you, they are very smart and affectionate, based on YOUR interactions with them. Be loving but balanced but give them a good home, a lot of people don't take their cats seriously. Take care of them.

My mom did the same thing with my dog. She got pregnant by our other dog n she didn’t want puppies. Behind my back, my mom had Ron Tabor our dog catcher come n get her. I seen him and hid her cuz somehow I knew. But at the time I thought it was my neighbor who did it n crying hard I went next door to share with her how cruel she was for doing that. And she said I promise you it wasn’t me, I would never do that. Right then I knew it was my mom n told her I knew it was her n she didn’t deny it. My mom is gone now and I’ve always loved her but she was never a biblically righteous woman. So she never did treat me right anyways. She trusted wrong things. I prayed for her always. I have had lots of animals that have died and I miss them all. We have had to shoot a few animals for various reasons, which at the time we had to but it hurts my stomach to think about it. One kitty was smashed on the road but still alive n suffering horribly. There were about 35 cats we had coming to our house after I was an adult n they were spreading a disease called FIP around. We had to stop the spread. All the kittens were dying a terrible slow death also. I thought someone was poisoning them but I really didn’t know. I know the cat foods cause male cats to get bladder blockage and the vets know this and they charge 7000.00 for a catheter. Or 200.00 to put them to sleep. Isn’t that so sick? The foods are GMOed n full of things not meant for animals and making our animals sick. I can’t wait for MESSIAH to come back and make everything right again.

My grandparents 1 year old gray tomcat disappeared and came back after 1 year, was home a few days then disappeared again... Also we had a male and a female Bengal cat that was best friends and the male cat died from sickness last winter at age 12. The female cat refused to go out for more then a few minutes after that when she did not have the male cat to protect her. But this summer her son that is 10 years old started visiting every every day and started living under our porch refusing to go home. So we left the door open so he could come inside to visit. At first he just put his head in the door opening looking inside and this he did for a few days. Then he started to come inside walk a little around then go out again, but his mom cat was not to happy about him coming inside and hissed at him every time. The next week he wandered deeper into the house and explored and also sent in his friend cat a white long haired cat to take a look... I found that out by the female cat sitting in my room starring angrily at my bed and then hissing. The white cat had wandered in and was hiding under my bed an now when it was discovered by our cat it wanted to get away. Our cat just sat there and let it pass and followed it out to make sure it left, then she came back and gave me angry look believing it was me that was hiding the cat under the bed lol :) Next day I found her son in my brothers bedroom sitting and looking starring long at hard at my TV that I used to have in the house he did grow up in. It looked like he recognized it and then realized and remembered he used to live with us. After that day he moved in permanently in our house and refused to go home more then for a short trip. His mom was not to happy about him moving in but she slowly accepted it and if we forgot to feed him she would come and meow asking for food, and not eat the food we gave because it was for him :) His owners tried to lock him in the house when he was at home at the end of the summer and he panicked meowing and running around non stop for 2 hours until they let him out and he run back at our house immediately. After that he did not go inside anymore, only visiting on the outside of his home... We think the reason he moved away from home is they had a mini pig that hated him that would beat him up and bite him every chance it got. They also had a high energy puppy that would not let him sleep in peace and always wanted to play. So he came to us for piece and quiet. Now our female cat has accepted him living here and he is her bodyguard when they go out together just like his father used to. After her son moved in she started going out again for walks that laster ours, like she used to. Also when he lived with us as a kitten the first 5 months of his life we used to go on daily walks with all the cats. First walk we was with her son he did not know what we was doing and reluctantly followed us, then it seemed something clicked and he remembered and after that he loved going for walks and would even meow and ask to go for a walk with him :)

After a while we couldn't find her, kept calling for her and checking all over the house. After an hour or so we thought she had somehow gotten outside. We started putting posters all over the neighborhood, searching for her for hours. Getting a few calls from people who saw a black cat outside (There are so many black cats outside lol) After searching for the entire day I heard my girlfriends brother say "Hey, I found the cat". Apparently she had gone behind a couple of books in a bookshelf and taken a nap, didn't come out for the entire day

I use heavily modified, lighter-weight versions of the "tabcat" radio tags to locate kitty when out of sight. I modify them by myself, removing the outer casing and replacing it with a hand-sawn pouch, lined with cellophane. Oh, and I solder the CR2032 battery to them, for increased reliability. The collar is made out of a strip of elastic lycra, which tends to "hide" under the cat's fur, but readily lets the cat free if hanging.

My step-sister had a cat, then she moved out and took the cat. I guess she decided it was too much to take care of, so dropped the cat in our front yard one day when nobody was around. She then concocted a story that the cat ran away and must've used her instinct to go back to her previous home. It was probably a half-hour drive away, and not just a simple drive down one long road. The things we think people will believe...

My vet suggested putting some of the used litter outside when my cat disappeared. Apparently they can smell their own scent from a long ways away. Unfortunately, my cat did not come back, but it’s still a good tip.

Interesting. I had a pretty calico kitty that disappeared and never came back, it was about the same time we had all these tree cutters clearing off excess pine trees in the backyard, now it makes sense, I think she got stressed out by it . This was 10+ years ago so I'm over the loss, but it did give me something to think about.

We adopted a cat that was saved from a kitty mill. After some research, she had about 5 litters in the first 3 years of her life. They were sold off between 4 to 5 weeks after birth. Her last litter was thankfully at the animal shelter, and those kittens stayed with her for 12 weeks, before they had great forever homes. After 2 years of having a peaceful life with us, she left our apartment for a few days, which was nothing new, as she has done this a few times before. Although this time we suddenly got a call that she was found dead. No visible injuries, and no signs of poison. She just curled up somewhere on a nice day, fell asleep with a smile, and just never woke up. 😢 We buried her at the pet cemetery in our town, as she was family for us. 😭 We miss her very much.

That actually happened before. A few days after my family and I got girl house cat named Tia, she escaped my house and ran away. My family and I we're very worried that she won't come back until that one Saturday morning when I heard a meow of a cat nearby and I looked at the window, Tia actually came back before a rainstorm came into the area.

My one cat kept running away after my mother moved somewhere an hour from our house. I thought he was running away because he was upset that she moved. I caught him one last time on the way to the park, having been looking for about 15 minutes around my house. It was a low traffic area on the way to a nearby park. He'd also been vocalizing more after she moved, but I didn't think to call the vet to have him checked out. Anyways, I decided it was best to have him live with her. My mother has trouble keeping the cats inside, and she's lucky one doesn't go outside and 2 stick around the house. The cat I'm talking about in this story ended up getting outside and running away.

I watched this to try to get a clue of how Olive came to be my cat, key words, my cat. I will default to that she came from either a stressful or neglected home. Often times, when I was walking the neighborhood, I'd see her standing on a street corner, waiting for attention. Other times, I'd come home to find pillows on my front porch furniture strewn with her scurrying off- one evening she followed me inside and six months later, still hasn't left. Lost cat found signs didn't send her off. She is here to stay in a very quiet and routine home (quiet with no TV, music, or verbal noise / routine in when she eats and when we play). When I open the door to leave for awhile, she has no desire to leave as well. We are contented with each other. Q: does she remember her prior home or prior name?

Same rules are applied on DOGS as well My neighbour had a dog which didn't got enough attention, they sometimes beats him if he does something wrong and leaves him alone at home for safeguarding when they go for travel....so initially he used to leave the house and then come back after few weeks. Sometime later the owner figured out the house where he goes to occasionally and so he gave him to them permanently.

My cats have allways come home. Even when they knew they were about to die. Both terrible and somehow comforting at the same time. Because not knowing where and how they are is the worst. And yes, it shows they trust en loved me until the end. The longest time my cats were away, were about 48 hours. The first thing I do when I have a new cat, is walk around the block with them, and a little bit further away, so it knows were he is, if something scares him. I used to have 5 cats at the same time, than we walked down the block, and sometimes 2 other neighbouring cats walked with us. Cats like that, but not on a leash.

I do the same thing it truly works I also taught my cat's to come to my whistle just like a dog this way I have never lost the cat but truthfully speaking they really don't have the desire to leave the property I guess it's because they're spayed neutered if it starts to rain snow or time to go night night I Whistle and they all line up coming to the garage and get in their beds

@@JY-cm9bc Neutering a cat can keep them at home if a female cat is in heat. But neutered or not neutered, they always love to walk with their human. It is bonding too. But you are right, if I do not walk with them, they hardly leave the property. Well not more than 100 metres/ yards.

This story proves a point of mine a lot of people simply don’t believe. I think cats often like a property or home a lot more than its “owners”. I ended up with a neighbour’s cat that came go live under my old house. The cat didn’t like children and I was a middle-aged bachelor … a good match. When its “owners” moved they may have taken the cat with them but after a couple of weeks it was back at my home. I think they got the hint and never bothered looking for it. If I saw the cat, I fed it scraps and it had a water bowl but apart from that it was on its own. Despite this it loved me … I was the only guy it never scratched. But I think it liked my home more.

Only 3 reasons for anything aliuve to not return. They are prevented (captured), can't (die), or don't want to (find a nicer place to live). A social animal pet that is well cared for, has good companionship and interesting things to do will be reluctant to leave its home. What's jaw-dropping is that this could have been a short that took one person 8 minutes to prepare, containing what could be said in three sentences in under 15 seconds.

we had two cats they could be gone for a couple of days (specialy one of them) but they always returned, we also had horses so i would think they recognised the smell of the horses and followed that if they got lost (one was away for 4 days one time so we was getting a little nervous, but he came home beeing quite full with hare dung in its pelt, so most likely captured a small one, there was some in the area we lived and our cats was not the smallest either once a fox run yelping out of the garage/stable and our cats usualy slept there) oh and the cats was not able to reproduce, we did that quite early afther we got them. in the cats minds inside was where we was allowed to pet them and mainly play, outside they dident realy want that just some times. there was lots of places just around the house and the garage where they could find safe places to if for some reason they got scared. there was a multitude of large rocks around there next to the large hill that was behind our house that formed small caves etc that had the perfect sice for a cat. the cats also had warm areas to sleep during the night in the winter. on the coldest days they was allowed to sleep inside, same with the 31th of december (only day of the year where firework is allowed to be sent up in norway, some large citys also send up fireworks during the 17th of may but no privat person are allowed to do it that day)

When I was in elementary school, two kids in Mr. Samson’s 4th/5th class cried after they lost their cats after pulling their cats by the tail. And I’m pretty sure that they got scratched in the face and had to have bandages. The first kid I knew that had lost his cat was Christian. The second kid was Finn. A third kid named Sean explained that his cat, Loco (which means crazy in Spanish) was stuck up in the tree, so he alerted his mom, then she came and his mom saw him in the tree, so she had to call the fire department to rescue him.
