CLIP DESCRIPTION:
To prevent the shark from submerging, Quint (Robert Shaw) harpoons it with a line attached to a floating barrel.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on Peter Benchley's best-selling novel, Steven Spielberg's 1975 shark saga set the standard for the New Hollywood popcorn blockbuster while frightening millions of moviegoers out of the water. One early summer night on fictional Atlantic resort Amity Island, Chrissie decides to take a moonlight skinny dip while her friends party on the beach. Yanked suddenly below the ocean surface, she never returns. When pieces of her wash ashore, Police Chief Brody (Roy Scheider) suspects the worst, but Mayor Vaughn (Murray Hamilton), mindful of the lucrative tourist trade and the approaching July 4th holiday, refuses to put the island on a business-killing shark alert. After the shark dines on a few more victims, the Mayor orders the local fishermen to catch the culprit. Satisfied with the shark they find, the greedy Mayor reopens the beaches, despite the warning from visiting ichthyologist Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) that the attacks were probably caused by a far more formidable Great White. One more fatality later, Brody and Hooper join forces with flinty old salt Quint (Robert Shaw), the only local fisherman willing to take on a Great White--especially since the price is right. The three ride off on Quint's boat "The Orca," soon coming face to teeth with the enemy.
CREDITS:

This movie really stood out in a time in the mid 1970's when mostly every movie was very long, very drawn out with a lot of dialogue, and very little action. Sleepy campy movies. With the exception of soul films of course. Shaft was a badass movie.

so right, the music is astounding - he makes the mood for every moment, so the whole thing becomes emotionally massive. it's like he took the skills of the silent movie piano accompanist and amped them 5 million times. Jaws is a triumph of story, casting and camerawork but the music is equal to all of that.

2:07 - 2:21 I ALWAYS love this part of the score in this scene, it's just- I don't know how to describe it. The situation combined with the score just SCREAMS uncertainty. Will Hooper tie the barrel in time? Will Quint miss the shark? What will the shark do if things don't go to plan? It's that build up of uncertainty that really gets you hooked (Pun intended)

It makes it appear as if the humans are gonna win. As if they are the hunters. With all their teamwork & technology, they barely manage against an incredibly strong & efficient creature. Yes, they manage to kill the shark in the end. But that doesn't even matter. Shaw got killed, too, and the other 2 will probably never be the same, suffering from PTSD. The shark is actually innocent. It just hunts to eat. It finds easy prey in humans, so it decides to hunt them. It's pure instinct. The humans, on the other hand, esp. Shaw, project their trauma & hatred on an innocent animal. Which leads to their deminse, literally or morally. This is "their moment", before things start going down for them.

I've seen hundreds of movies, and this is by far my favorite. The whole idea of a shark out-thinking the experts is just brilliant. And its because sharks are real, and in their world, they are at the top of the food chain: NOT US. Of all the scenes in the movie, and I love them all, I feel this is the greatest scene ever produced. The music, the acting, the idea of a shark attacking a boat with 3 grown men with weapons, is absolutely brilliant cinematography. Thank you Mr Spielberg, Mr Shaw, Mr Scheider, and Mr. Dreyfuss. @roquefortfiles
@roquefortfiles 4 жыл бұрын
There's nothing really amazing about the cinematography. The shots are fabulously composed (That's Steven) but the lighting is simply daylight. Big deal. The skill comes in matching the various cuts shot weeks apart. If you notice the close up on Robert Shaw is in over cast. The wide shot is in bright sunshine. Obviously shot at different times. But it all works because the cutting and action is exciting. You don't notice the discrepancy of the skies. But look for it and you'll see it. Sticks out like a sore thumb. But the acting and cutting is so good that you're not paying attention to the "Sky" which drastically changes shot to shot. This sequence of the shark approaching the boat with Robert on the pulpit likely took WEEKS to shoot.

***** Oh man. The score is amazing in this film. And it is not just the duh nuh. It is all the other motifs and themes. I could critique every scene and describe why it works so incredibly. Right up there with Rick Roy and Robert is John Williams. He is the emotion of the film. One of my all time fav film moments and something that is burned in my memory is the start of the shark hunt. The moment when we first see the shark and Dreyfus then bolts down the ladder. The music takes off and the adventure begins. I've seen it a hundred times and it STILL excites me.

While I love complex characters and stories, there is something wonderful about watching a simple movie executed beautifully. Films like Fantasia and To Kill a Mockingbird are masterful examples, but I feel Jaws is the movie that perfected the art of simple storytelling. At its core, it’s just three men with simple motivations and personality traits hunting a shark. But the way that they interact off each other and their banter make them possibly my favorite trio in all of cinema.

This is the only scene in the entire movie where the mechanical shark worked perfectly. In all other scenes, notice the use of only half/parts of the shark's body (so that people could manipulate it), or the barrels in place of the shark. It goes to show how absolutely brilliant Steven Spielberg is .. in every other scene using only "part of" the shark his camera angles and use of building suspense perfectly distract the viewers from the fact they are not looking at a whole shark. A major reason the three stars are so hyped up in this scene is because they know they will not get the chance to have "another take"; there is no way they could re-set-up everything so perfectly, at sea, in this scene.
@tdelamont
@tdelamont 8 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure this is the "tow shark", the one you don't hear about much. It didn't run on the rail system. It hooked up to a tow rope which was tied to an out of frame boat that simply towed it around. It didn't really have any moving parts (maybe a rudder) so it couldn't break down. They used it a lot (they had to). I read about it in a paperback called "The Making of Jaws" back in about 1977. It had a lot of production and behind the scenes photos, which was pretty damn rare back then. Very cool. I remember a chapter called "The Sunk Sinking Orca and The Well-Worn Shark", where the boat and the shark had to work together. Naturally, either the boat wouldn't sink correctly, or the shark wouldn't work. Or both. Nightmare. The last chapter of the book was entitled The End of the "Tale" and featured a photo of Chrissie's naked butt as she ran into the surf in the opening scene. Pretty funny to a 10-year-old.
@roquefortfiles
@roquefortfiles 8 жыл бұрын
All the swimming shots around the boat are with the sea sled shark which was simply pulled through the shots by a speed boat. None of these shots involved the platform shark. That was the shark that constantly malfunctioned because it had all the pneumatics for activation. The sea sled footage was difficult to do because it took so long to set the shots. If the take didn't work the reset for take 2 took half an hour. These shots took days to accomplish.

There actually was no feud between them. Shaw was somewhat a method actor on set and would tease Dreyfuss on and off. Dreyfuss had even said in an interview that there was no bad air between them whatsoever, and he even admires and looks up to Shaw with much praise.

I like what they did with Brody here, they kind of made him a fish out of water character which is ironic, he's had little to no experience with sharks, he's never drove a boat and he hates the ocean whilst you've got Quint who is an expert on hunting sharks and Hooper who is an expert on shark knowledge

1:12 this shot sums up pretty much the 2nd half of Jaws: Brody is much closer to Quint than Hooper is to Quint, and the personalities of them or what they do: Quint: Getting his harpoon ready, he's ready to hunt this shark down like any other. Hooper: Doing his sientific, that's probably the biggest shark he's ever seen. Brody: Doing basic stuff a he's out of his element, getting to learn what's going on around him.
