When a young woman is killed by a shark while skinny-dipping near the New England tourist town of Amity Island, police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) wants to close the beaches, but mayor Larry Vaughn (Murray Hamilton) overrules him, fearing that the loss of tourist revenue will cripple the town. Ichthyologist Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and grizzled ship captain Quint (Robert Shaw) offer to help Brody capture the killer beast, and the trio engage in an epic battle of man vs. nature.

If someone hasn't told you, friend, this movie was based on a novel, which was inspired by a true story about a rare shark attack in a NJ(?) river! So NO suspension of belief required, & not just simple reason to demonize sharks, though it sure as hell did!😅 See ya! ✌🌎❤

I think you might enjoy the movie *The Women* from 1939. The film continued the play's all-female tradition-the entire cast of more than 130 speaking roles was female. Throughout The Women, not a single male character is seen or heard. The attention to detail was such that even in props such as portraits, only female figures are represented, and several animals which appeared as pets were also female. The only exceptions are a poster-drawing of a bull in the fashion show segment, a framed portrait of Stephen Haines as a boy, a figurine on Mary's night stand, and an advertisement on the back of the magazine Peggy reads at Mary's house before lunch that contains a photograph of Douglas Fairbanks, Jr.

Fun Fact: while indeed Shark attacks are very uncommon, the book that Jaws is based on took inspiration from a series of real life shark attacks in New Jersey in 1916. Five people were attacked over the course of two days and only one survived. Though in those cases it was actually a Bull Shark instead of a Great White. Bull sharks are actually very aggressive and more terrifyingly can actually adapt to fresh water. Have fun living with that information.

JAWS was also the first giant shark movie. While we hear about 20 foot sharks now a days at the time the 25 foot long Great White in the movie surprised a lot of movie goers that had only seen dolphin sized sharks on tv shows like flipper and Sea Hunt or James Bonds 'Thunderball" movie so had no idea that Great Whites regularly grew to 17 feet long when mature.

Only true for the second half. Bruce was never scheduled to be used for the first half. The beach scenes were all filmed May and June 1974. Bruce wasn't scheduled for use until July. Besides, they couldn't use such a massive contraption in just 3ft to 4ft of water. The shark was hidden by design early on. Spielberg was already a suspense director. Watch Duel and Something Evil. Interesting story: Several decades after the filming of “Jaws” (1975), Lee Fierro, who played Mrs. Kintner, walked into a seafood restaurant and noticed that the menu had an “Alex Kintner Sandwich.” She commented that she had played his mother so many years ago. The owner of the restaurant ran out to meet her - none other than Jeffrey Voorhees, who had played her son. They hadn’t seen each other since the original movie shoot

The movie was shot in Martha's Vinyard, but the book took place in the Hamptons on Long Island. Benchley, the author, lived in NYC and used to party there on the weekends. And he read about the famous shark attacks in NJ in the early 1900,s and thought the Hampton's would be a great setting for a shark book. Spielberg thought the Hamptons were to developed for the sleepy town he wanted for the movie. Also, Captain Quint is based on a real shark fisherman out of Montaulk in the 50's and 60's. Amityville Long Island is a real town you have to drive past to get to the Hampton's from NYC. It's also the actual town where the real Amityville horror murders took place. Being 15, living on Long Island about an hour west of the Hamptons, and having read the book, yeah, this scared the crap out of us. We still went to the beach but not much in the water. Then, just when we were getting over this, a few years later, Son of Sam(the .44 caliber killer,) started shooting up the young people outside the discos, making out in their cars in Brooklyn and Queens mostly. So here I am, a teenager, and I can't get girls to go to the beach, the disco or rock clubs, or make out in my car. Talk about a stunted early love life. :(

My favourite film of all time. A lot of that has to do with the fact that it came out the week I was born and when I was little I thought that was cool. Also, watching it with my dad when I was younger brings back good memories. The suspense is what makes the film, even though a lot of people today think it's too slow and some have even said boring. The reason they didn't show the shark much, from what I read was they were having problems with it working properly, so they decided not to show it less from the begining but it was a good choice, it build the suspence, Spielberg really struck gold with this one
@lyndoncmp5751

Actually that has become an overly exaggerated myth. Bruce was in fact never scheduled to be used for any of the beach scenes, filmed as they were in only waist to chest deep water. They were filmed in May and June 1974. Bruce was not scheduled to be used for any scenes until July, when filming moved out to sea in the deeper water. Far more of the shark was meant to be shown in the the second half but it kept breaking down at sea, so they relied on the barrels, fishing rod etc more. Spielberg was already a suspense director as Duel and Something Evil prove. The shark was purposely kept hidden for the first half of the film. Cheers.

Sometimes I think this movie is about dealing with guilt. Quint has survivor's guilt. It's so bad, he dedicated his life to killing sharks. He knows he can't run from that guilt, which is why he doesn't allow the chief to call for help. Quint is going to face his destiny and it's too bad for the chief and Hooper that they are stuck there with him. Meanwhile, the chief is dealing with the guilt of not protecting public safety and getting a kid killed. But the chief manages to kill the shark, earning redemption and saving him from a fate similar to Quint.

I was in senior high school english at the time. Quint's character's irrationality seemed to get some people scratching their heads. Our english teacher pointed out that Peter Benchley (author of the book) did what a lot of writers did and lifted entire themes from 2 famous books. The first was "Enemy of the People" about a small town sheriff or doctor who takes an ethical stand but is vilified by his town for economic reasons. The 2nd is Moby Dick, Quint is Ahab. Ahab lost his leg, Quint lost all his friends and goes on a life long revenge on sharks, he can't let the great "white" shark escape. He's destroyed by his own distorted perceptions and hate, etc, etc.

The first PG13 movie was Red Dawn in 1984. Parents had been complaining about the violence and nudity as well as the level of scary scenes in PG films like Jaws and Poltergeist for several years before the higher rating was instituted. The straw (or 2 in this case) that broke the camel's back was Gremlins and Indiana Jones & Temple Of Doom. This was rated PG because I saw it when it came out when I was 13 and my sister was 10. We both loved horror movies and creature features thanks to mom. After this I had something of a confused, kind of diametrically opposed reaction to the movie. On obe hand I was terrified of the ocean afterwards (still don't like it) and I loved water/swimming so much that my parents said I was half fish. On the other hand it spawned a lifelong fascination with shark movies....even really bad ones like Ghost Shark or Sharktopus.

That's half right... the first film that year reviewed by the mpaa and given the rating of pg-13 was actually the flamingo kid even though it came out in theaters after red dawn it was shown to the mpaa early because of the festival premiere... Spielberg is actually the person who suggested the new rating to the committee because they wanted to give temple of doom and Gremlins an R rating and Spielberg said that would hurt its box office and wouldn't allow teenagers to see it without an adult so he suggested a new rating for kids at a certain age without parental guidance but in order to release temple of doom and gremlins in theaters Spielberg edited the films and cut out some of the violent and disturbing images... the flamingo kid had too much profanity when it was reviewed during the summer of 84 and the director and studio refused to edit it down to pg and it was given the first pg-13 rating even though it wasn't released til December... red dawn and dune were the next titles up for review

Yes, shark attacks were as rare back in the 70s as they are now. Jaws the movie was based on a fiction book, which tried to mirror the actual shark attacks in the summer of 1916 in New Jersey, and fictionally attributed them to a lone rogue man-eating shark. Someone else suggested you watch the movie Duel. Please do. It shows some of the building blocks that went into the making of Jaws.

There may be relatively few shark attacks, but this movie were inspired by an actual series of attacks that occurred in New Jersey in which several people were killed by a Bull Shark. And Great Whites do travel as far north in the summer to be spotted of the New England coast.

Hello I’m Stevo from Scotland. Me & my hubbs love love love jaws and it was so cool to watch your reaction (we’ve seen many people react to this movie) and i see that you reacted brilliantly and gave it the respect that it deserves. I have just subscribed to your channel and will be watching a lot more of your reactions. Just out of interest! You mentioned about it being pg in 1975, well I’m about to give my age away 😮in 1975 i was a young boy of five and we as a family went to see jaws at the cinema in London. It was my first ever movie and to this day I’ve been a very big fan,so yes i was only five and it scared the bejeebeez out of me.but do you know what!! I’m glad it did. The law changed here for movies after that but I’m soooo glad i got to see before it did change thankfully 🙏 anyways thank you for taking the time to read my message and if i get a reply (sometimes you don’t) it would be cool. Steve & martyn 💜 …. Oh and one more thing, have you seen the colour purple (also Steven Spielberg). It will surprise you as it’s so different from jaws. 👍💜

For some reason this is one of my favorite Jaws tidbits. Several decades after the filming of “Jaws” (1975), Lee Fierro, who played Mrs. Kintner who's son was attacked on the raft walked into a seafood restaurant and noticed that the menu had an “Alex Kintner Sandwich.” She commented that she had played his mother so many years ago. The owner of the restaurant ran out to meet her - none other than Jeffrey Voorhees, who had played her son. They hadn’t seen each other since the original movie shoot. Also a bit bummed, I wanted to see her reaction to the U.S.S. Indianapolis scene.

My family and I own a house nearby this area in Cape Cod Massachusetts (this was filmed on Martha’s Vineyard) and over the past few years there has been a seal population that has moved to that area and with them brough the sharks, so the area has heavily embraced the touristy stuff like having Jaws themed items for sale during the summers. Spielberg even opened a small theater in a nearby town and every summer it plays Jaws in its theater. This probably is the one of the few movies where it pulled off making the monster scarier by not seeing it even though it was an accident. It was originally planned to see the monster a lot more, but it kept breaking down in the sea because you have an animatronic in the ocean and salt water isn't good for that lol.

Interestingly, Hooper was supposed to die in the cage, like he does in the book, but during filming in an area with actual great whites, a shark got tangled with the cage while no one was in it and began thrashing around. They liked the footage enough to change the script and make Hooper eacape so that they could use it

I don't know if you know this, but we were actually supposed to see a lot more of Bruce, but the people behind the shark animatronics were made to be filmed in freshwater, unaware that they would decide to film in saltwater. The saltwater damaging the mechanics in the sharks. So they had to come up with ways to imply Bruce's presence. The music, the barrels, the pier, etc.

Your reaction to the shark's demise is exactly how people reacted back in 1975. Popcorn was flying up in the air and people were cheering like you wouldn't believe. And the funny thing is in the novel the shark dies from pulling too many barrels and Peter Benchley the author of the novel disagreed with how Spielberg wanted the shark killed. He said no one would ever believe they shoot an air tank and it explodes. Spielberg told him, "if I have the audience for two hours they're gonna believe anything I do in the last three minutes. And that's how they want to see the animal die". And he was right.

Benchley did make a pretty good point, though. Years after seeing this in the theatre, I got ahold of an old ".22-short" pistol, went down to an empty construction site down the road and shot an aerosol can expecting a pretty big explosion, but it just kinda went "PFFFT!" and spun around in the dirt.

Hey Clariss, you would do a great reaction to a fantastic horror movie with outrageously great Oscar nominated performances from both Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie in "Carrie"! Which came out the next year in 1976. Spacek got nominated for Best Actress, PIper Laurie Best Supporting Actress....very rare for a horror movie! Brian De Palma directed it (his best movie in my opinion) and there are other great performances from Betty Buckley, Amy Irving, Nancy Allen, PJ Soles, John Travolta, William Katt......highly recommend that one! Lots of reactors have done it, it's always a great reaction! A very special, one-of-a-kind horror movie. It was Stephen King's first book, adapted into a movie.

There's also a real life, true crime mystery attached to the making of this movie. It was filmed in Maine. They shot during a break in school, and hired a LOT of college kids as extras. A young woman was found brutally murdered in the dunes nearby. AFAIK it's still unsolved. She's still a Jane Doe. Some believe she is seen alive in the background of one shot, although I think that particular shot was a deleted scene. She's referred to as "The Lady Of The Dunes". Stephen King's son, who is also an author, is the one leading that theory.
