Being an immigrant I know this feeling way too well , you could be living paycheck to paycheck and people back home will still be calling you everyday demanding you send them money and material things and when you explain to them how this country works they don’t believe you and think you’re holding out . Crazy thing is if you send them an amount they think is too small compared to what they think you have they won’t even call back to say thank you . They ask for new iPhones ect I don’t even have the latest phones but I’m supposed to just spent 1k to hand a grown adult a new phone simply cause we’re related ? Of course living in poverty is hard but stop being fucking entitled to people’s money, it takes the joy out of generosity

I have heard similar to this. My husband's family is from Trinidad. He was born in the U.S. His mom was a nurse, and his dad had a blue collar job. You would think on a nurse's salary they would be living okay in the 90s. He said they grew up poor. He found out they were sending a lot of money back home. He has 6 siblings, and they were struggling to eat. Their family back home did not care. They thought they were rich coming to America.

I can appreciate everything spoken about in this clip. I agree with mostly all of it. The only thing I am not a fan of is when so-called "friends" you've known for many, many years decide not to help when you know they have it to give . I once was in a very desperate, near life changing situation and this "friend" used a long-winded "lending money destroys relationships" explanation as to why they could not assist...instead of simply saying no. I would have been totally fine with that if they did. I was asking for something I surely would have paid back but I was not even given the chance, and this was the only time EVER in all of my years of knowing this person that I asked for anything. Needless to say, they are no longer in my life. It taught me a huge lesson about focusing even more on self-sufficiency and about who really gives a damn about you and your well-being when you're near rock bottom.

@@bananabread2833 I hear you, good point. My main point, though, was I would have absolutely been fine with a blatant no. And, I never felt this person (or anybody) SHOULD have assisted me. However, I thought (and was wrong to assume this) that they might have at least offered emotional support for my urgent situation but did not. Upon deeper reflection later, I realized going forward in life I have zero expectations of people giving a damn about me and what goes on in my life. I'm reading these comments and it's funny because a few years ago everybody would have been piling on Jay-Z, calling him a sellout and accusing him of abandoning his people or some other nonsense, but Jay-Z has played the long game and now he's admired for his way of thinking. Jay beat his critics by simply ignoring them and staying on his own path. Guy's a winner.

My rule is if you say it’s a loan, it’s a loan. If you say give it to me, it’s not a loan. Like if you can’t even be transparent when asking, it’s a problem. And if you give me a date, then let’s work towards that date; if you can’t make the date, communicate, don’t just say nothing. And I agree, be realistic; if you asking for money you know you know you don’t have or can’t pay back, don’t even. Also, if you haven’t said two words to me, but you can ask me for money, you’re asking the wrong person. I’m Dominican American, and my family in DR doesn’t even know how I’m doing, how my kids are, but as soon as they get my number or find my social media, they’re asking me for Jordans, iPhones, and Zara 😅. Don’t even give me a hello, how are you, just straight, send me. Like, “What you say your name is again? And I know you from where?”
