I was really amazed by this album. My biggest gripe with Jay always was how distant he seemed. While Nas painted vivid imagery of the urban lifestyle, Jay sounded like he was telling stories to friends that knew what was going on. Maybe it´s because I´m not from NY. And then when he became rich and successful, every project sounded like he was trying to teach me something, but he no longer felt like a story teller, but rather a mentor. Yet we rarely saw the real Jay, like on December 4th. But this album seems like he had a breakdown and came to me to vent out his worries. 9/10 for me.

also I heard a rumor that the physical release will have 3 extra tracks. I hope that won´t hurt the narrative.

Unade You DO understand that when artists say that, they’re using it as a metaphor for the fact that they have to “sacrifice” or give up any semblance of a private life in order to live in wealth/fame, right? They’re not LITERALLY selling their souls. Everywhere you go you’re no longer Marshall, you’re Eminem. You don’t get to be YOU anymore, you have to live as your celebrity persona or else everything you’ve worked so hard to gain will be lost. It’s so easy to become irrelevant or fall from grace as a celebrity, that al you ever get to do with your time is find ways to keep the momentum going, and THAT’S what they mean when they said they sold their soul.

By far the best Jay-Z album since the Black Album, I would have trouble not giving this album a 9. I'd go as far as saying this is No I.D.'s Magnum Opus, plus Jay-Z is finally being real, he's no longer worried about making 5 mil, he's rapping like Common Sense. I know they've worked together for a long time, but this is the perfect Producer/Rapper combo on an album, up there with Train of Thought and Dangerdoom. Do you think any album this year deserves the "Best Rap Album" Grammy over this one? I like DAMN and All-Amerikkkan Bada$$ but don't even feel like it's close.

the "smartest" artists study the reactions of the people to other artists and then adjust their personnas accordingly. Its a longevity tactic that only lasts for as long as an artist can accurately determine the interests of the majority of listeners. As time goes on, I’m starting to think this might be Jay Z’s best album. Definitely his most honest and intimate album-It sounds like he got kicked out of the family home and you’re just chilling next to him at his other apartment, and he’s just venting to an old friend about his struggles everything that’s been on his mind. It’s like a hip hop “Blood on the Tracks.”

Check out HBO's The Defiant Ones. Towards the end of the show you'll see the same themes from this album shinning through on the show. Yea as far as the reference, I thought it was plain as day.

I'm not that much of a Jay-Z fan having not properly looked into his discography, but holy fuck is this album incredible. Had me hooked from the start and ashamed that I've slept on Hov's talent for so long. 8's a perfect score for it, thanks for giving me more to think about with this album Melon xo

not much of a Jay Z fan, this album was so personal, and thats what I'm looking for in artists, an expression of emotions. 4:44 made me cry and I can absolutely not relate to it but the pure emotion expressed is beautiful.

as a ye fan, I feel like this album is a kanye fans jay z album, with the vulnerableness of albums like ye, kids see ghosts, and a lot of other kanye songs I feel like the average kanye fan would enjoy this jay z album a lot, Which is true to me, I enjoy this album a lot and its one of my personal favorites.

How is Jay "paranoid" to point out the simple fact that certain people disproportionately control and own certain areas of business that greatly influence life as most of us know it and that certain people suffer - in part - because they are overall much less disciplined with their wealth? He just told the truth, suggesting certain people change their financial habits to that of the people with much better group economics and individual financial literacy. He'd know directly much better than any of us. It's paranoid to state facts?

Rasar Amani You do realize that you're grossly stretching what jayz said.
@rasarmusic17 жыл бұрын
I've done nothing of the sort, but I'm intrigued to hear your reasoning and what you think a proper understanding of the lyrics are.
@hkdiz17907 жыл бұрын
+Rasar you didn't stretch anything. I feel like concluding the bar as anti-Semitic and "borderline conspiracy theorist" is more of a stretch, ironically enough. Don't know what this Gregory guy is on about. People in this comment section also don't seem to realize that songs can have multiple meanings, and can simultaneously be simple and complex. Whoosh. It's sad.

Those ending comments are interesting cause as someone who has never quite clicked with jay-z’s music (i like him just not enough to call myself a fan) this album when it came out i was instantly in love with it. It’s such a different style that i think where he excels as a rapper is put in the spotlight with the lowkey instrumentals and in such a sentimental manner too.
@IceKoldKilla Жыл бұрын
Jay-Z is a talented individual. His rapping is amazing. But not all songs have been. Especially earlier on I felt that sonically, it felt like filler. Now? Holy fuck! I want more like this! If I had a say that is..

Really enjoyed the album, it's thought provoking in a way that it doesn't try to confuse you with poor metaphors and analogies, it gets straight to the point. Thought the production was fantastic, especially The Story of OJ, that Nina Simone sample and the haunting keys were amazing. Reminded me of Blood on the Leaves (the sample)
