The show is about the tower of Babel. So in the beginning, you have the main stage breaking up, representing the tower unable to be built due to people not understanding each other. From there you hear the different languages playing and all of the music gets frantic. When the soloists start in the middle, it has two contrasting ideas that start to combine, showing how people are starting to understand each other. From then on, it’s just very “uplifting” I guess and they people can now build the tower together again.

The first pieces played are "Journey to the centre of the earth" and "metropolis 1927" by peter graham. You can also probably assume how this ties in. The ballad is "my body is a cage" by peter gabriel, neat stuff.

I really appreciate the questions throughout the video. To touch on the dedication of these groups coming from someone who is in the activity, these members practice very very hard. Auditions are held in December and January for a full three-day weekend in each month. After the audition camps, there are callback camps in February, march and April where all of the members are finalized and given their contracts. After the callback camps is when the fun really begins. Somewhere during May, depending on the corps, all the contracted members and staff meet at a college or high school where they spend the next full month rehearsing together. A day of rehearsal generally consists of three 4-hour block. The morning block is from 8-12, the afternoon block is 1-5pm and the night block is 6-10pm. This schedule is upheld for the entirety of the month-long rehearsal. After the move in time period is when the corps go on tour, traveling through dozens of states while competing and refining their show as they go. Finally, in late august, all the corps from across the nation meet up in Indianapolis for the DCI Finals, which is where this video was filmed. Finals are a three-day long competition in which there are three rounds. All the corps compete on the first day and the top 28 make it to the next day. On day two, the remaining corps compete again. This time, only the top 12 groups move on to the final day. On the third day, the top 12 groups compete in finals. Hope this has been informative. I really enjoy talking about this topic so if you have any more questions don't hesitate to ask. P.S. I would suggest checking out Winter Guard International, it is a similar activity to DCI but in a basketball gym with only percussion.

You should go to a show this summer! Truly life changing!

DCI is students ages 14 to 21 (mainly college students and advance high schoolers). The season technically starts in late November, early December with auditions. From January to April, you will generally have mostly music rehearsals once a month on a weekend. And then beginning in May, you start having rehearsals every weekend and will begin to learn drill and visuals. Competitions begin at the end of June and since students will then be on summer break, you can have rehearsals on weekdays. The season last until the second week of August which is when Finals take place in Indianapolis.

Carolina Crown 2013 is considered by many to be one of the greatest DCI show of all time. The precision in all phases of the show is incredible. I think Bluecoats 2019 (Beatles show) was one of the most enjoyable from a pure entertainment perspective. So many of the shows in 2021 were entertaining to watch, Cavalier, Madison Scouts, Phantom Regiment. You asked how much time is required to perfect the show, as some people have mentioned already, auditions typically start in November/December. There are camps between January-April where they typically start learning music and learning how to march to a specific corps’ style, they also start conditioning their bodies for the physical demand of it. In May, all of these kids move into where ever the corps is, Santa Clara Vanguard in Cali (some people fly across the country to start off with their corps). Other notable corps have their spring training/summer move-in in Ohio, South Carolina, Illinois. Then, from May-August, these kids are rehearsing 5-7 days a week, sometimes over 12 hours a day. They sweat together, shower together, sleep on busses and gym floors for their entire summer perfecting their show (and having performances for local communities along the way) as they tour around the US. most competitions are towards the east and Mideast. It all ends at dci world champs the first weekend of august, where there is prelims, semi finals, and finals.
@tonyfitz89168 ай бұрын
The Drum Corps season technically starts in the end of May/beginning of June and goes until August. But auditions start the November at the end of a competitive season to get ready for the next season. So technically there is only about 2-3 months where people aren’t performing but they are still practicing for the next upcoming season. And typically anywhere from 400-800 people can try out for a world class drum corps like Santa Clara Vanguard or Phantom Regiment(both examples)
@alexlugosi50788 ай бұрын

I am a SCV Alumni and DCI world champion, and I had the pleasure of seeing this show live opening weekend at Stanford and again at finals. here are a couple of insights on this Championship season... After chasing the Blue Devils. all of 2017. and ending up in second place. They came out of the gate smoking in 2018. their only defeat was the very first show. Otherwise it would have been An undefeated season. They won every single caption, except for color guard, which they lost by, 0 .05. The young man that played the Triple E. who's only 16 years old. It was the highest note ever played at DCI. Until the next year, when he came out and paid even higher. The show did not have many changes. Only additions from the. original show. from opening weekend. I have A recording of the Standstill. They played at the barbecue before their first show at Stanford. The conversation in the crowd. was insane Listening to this horn line. You could tell from the beginning they were going to win. Santa Clara's last championship was in 1999. With the previous being 10 years before that. it had been long Overdue for this. world class corps To bring home the gold. There's no place like Santa Clara. ❤💚
@jameshigginbothamiii87038 ай бұрын
I believe they meet for practice 1-2 weekends during the spring, then when summer hits, you will have all day and into the evening rehearsals both outside on the field working drill, inside working music, sectionals working music by sections, and then putting it altogether. They will have 16-18 hour days of rehearsal. Then you have the travel to the different competitions around the region and country. What you're watching is the "Championship" competition in Indianapolis, that's held towards the end of August.
@Incognitominous8 ай бұрын
Dci is a summer activity and starts its camps early in the season to help members learn show music and get physically fit! I love HBCU bands for what they are, but man hearing the clarity and tuning of a drum corp show in person feels like you are being lifted to heaven as their sound carries you out of this world from how loud they are. The level of skill and precision these musicians have take countless amount of hours to practice and perfect all while running around the field out of breath. If you're talking about shows you want to watch crown 2013 is a MUST watch show as they scored a perfect score on finals night or cadets 2011 because it has some great drill.
@boilerdawg8 ай бұрын
You asked about what the timeline is like. I marched Blue Stars back in 2007 and 2008 so this is what our year would look like but it's pretty standard across all DCI. Audition camps would start in November. A typical camp will start Friday evening and end Sunday evening. Camps would be once a month. Typically after the December camp, the corps would be set with maybe a couple more spots getting filled along the way. Monthly camps would continue through April. We would learn all of the music. Visually, the focus would be more on just learning the technique. If weather was nice enough then we would be able to learn the first few pages of drill at the April camp. In mid-late May we would have move-ins where for 3-4 weeks we would rehearse all day, everyday to learn the show. About the second or third week of June we would start traveling to competitions. We'd have 4-5 shows a week in different cities across the country try. A show day would consist of rehearsal all day and the the show that night. After the showed we'd head to the next stop. Finals week would be the second weekend of August.
@urbandecayed798 ай бұрын
3-4 weeks for all-days?? Holy moly! When I marched Spirit of Atlanta in 2000, our move-in was I think June 8th and our first show which was a home show was on the 23rd so we had only a 2 week all-days. Not sure if length of all-days is any correlation of placing top 12 or not, but we didn't make finals and you guys placed 8th in 2008, right? To be fair, we were really lucky to have toured at all in 2000.
@boilerdawg8 ай бұрын
Amount of rehearsal time would certainly have some impact. Pretty sure it was 3 weeks of move-ins in Indiana before spending a week outside of LaCrosse, WI before setting out on tour. We did the same both years and were 14th on 07. Spirit beat us by 2 spots that year.
@urbandecayed798 ай бұрын
@@boilerdawg that's wild. Making top 12 had have felt amazing. Yeah 07 was one of the years that JSU was taking care of Spirit which is where all-days had been held since at least 1999. Yeah it was amazing! By that point though we had known for a while that were were in so it was all business. A few weeks earlier at either San Antonio or Atlanta, we had gotten through the afternoon prelim and made it into the main show that night. I think at that point we were in 9th or 10th. That was when it hit us. Our Executive Director, who had been with the corps in some capacity or another for decades, gave us our pre-show pep talk which he never did and could barely get through it because of the tears. From that point on it was "OK we're in! Now let's see what kind of noise we can make!" There were some moments leading up to Bloomington that it felt like we might have a shot at Bluecoats or SCV for 7th or even 6th. Ultimately they both hit another gear that week and pulled away from us, but we did the same and cleared BK in 9th by 2 points! I'm sorry you didn't get the chance to march Cadets that year. Glad you got the opportunity with Spirit though!

Hope someone explained this show. Post apocalyptic society where no one can speak. When horns hit first hit in opening it’s them screaming since they can’t speak. Think of each instrument as a group of people. Trumpets yelling at mellophones, tubas yelling at baritone etc. just chaos. Second song is each group trying to communicate with another but goes wrong. Third song drums try to communicate and fight. Fourth song ballad is where two baritone’s figure out how to communicate and you hear a click (light bulb ) goes off and everyone finally plays same sone tone finally able to communicate. Then the dance party to celebrate. Then tubas try to hyjack and take control but the rest of group doesn’t allow it and the two dancers that were separated in very beginning finally get back together in a society that can now speak and be on same song. Very emotional at end when they come back together.

You think this is crazy? Try Hebron High School 2021. I know it is probably a lot of work to make these reaction videos, and I am not asking you to do anything crazy, but just watch the first minute of their 2021 show and I guarantee you will be blown away. the 2 shows that usually knock people's socks off are SCV 2018 and Hebron 2021. If you do decide to watch it, just think, there are 14-year-olds on that field creating this incredible sound. one more thing, drum corps is not an activity that is friendly to beginners, I heard your questions during the video, and it is very hard to find answers as someone who doesn't know where to look. If you manage to find answers, it will create even more questions. so just enjoy. Thanks for reading this.

Seconded Hebron 2021 from a pure talent perspective. Broken Arrow 2021 was fye in terms of show design that year but if there's any one corps style high school show from recent history it's absolutely Hebron. Knocks your head off how that monster was produced right after covid year by teenagers 🔥🔥

Phantom regiment 2008 was the tide for dci shows honestly for what you see today. I auditioned for a call back but it’s only for the hottest summer months and they pay like 2k to participate but dci for brass and auxiliary is the best it gets outside of summer bands

I’m so glad you got on DCI…I’m huge swac band fan. But I be at the dci competitions in the summer!!!! The sound in person is ridiculous.

the DCI shows you should react to are Blue Devils 2017, Blue Coats 2014, and Carolina Crown 2013. Additionally, there are some excellent BOA bands which are High School bands that sound like a drum corps. It would amazing if you reacted to Hebron High School's 2021, 2022, and 2023 shows; you can't really go bad with any of their shows!

i just wonder, when you perform in a show this amazing (and there are many others), can the rest of your life live up to something like this or is this a peak moment that is difficult to match?
