Regarding Amundsen-Scott and footnotes, Ernest Shackleton is almost a footnote to the heroics and skills of Luis Pardo, the Piloto Pardo, who steered the Yelcho, the ship that rescued Shackleton from his antarctic confinement. Chilean here. At school we are taught that piece of Antarctica is ours, with no mention to the Treaty. Its extension is counted as part to the Chilean territory. 😂

In the top ten least important things in WWII, 8 is the vending machine at pearl habor is restocked the day before the attack. My great grandfather bought a snickers bar for breakfast from that machine while between submarines when the attack started, and until the day he died he never remembered wether he eat it, shoved it in his pocket,threw it away, or what. It seemingly vanished, but he always remember buying it. My family often recalls this story but have never found anything about the snickers bar.

Norway's claim actually does extend all the way to the south pole. On older maps it's only shown not to, because in the original wording of the claim the southern border was not explicitly defined. A few years ago Norway clarified that the claim actually extends all the way down to the pole. That "extension" was not a new claim, as that would have contradicted the Antarctic Treaty, but merely a clarification about the details of the original claim.

6:13 CORRECTION: The Antarctic Treaty does not have an expiration date. The Environmental Protocol to the Antarctic Treaty (or the Madrid Protocol) can be reviewed after 50 years of its adoption (in 1998), which is probably where you're getting the 2048 date from. It’s not true though. The Antarctic Treaty does not expire. Most likely they are referring to the Madrid Protocol ( or The Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty) of 1991 which bans mining and went into effect in 1998 and is up for review after fifty years (2048). Being up for review however means that a majority of members need to actively want to change it rather than it just running out by default.

I love how they always theorised there was a hidden continent on the bottom of the earth and they were going to call it Australis but they couldn't find one so they assumed they never would and just gave the name to the closest thing to a hidden southern continent, which became Australia... And then not long later by total coincidence they found the hidden southern continent.
@alexanderguerrero1395
@alexanderguerrero1395 3 жыл бұрын
Just for context, the full name was "terra australis incognita" (literally "southern unknown land") and "Australis" just means southern. So it wasn't an actual name, like Australia was (Australia more or less means "land of the South" in latin ).

Neither would any sane person living in Argentina or Chile. If there have been people born there, it was because their parents were there conducting research projects and they miscalculated the birth date or their plans to go back to the continent suffered some sort of unpredicted delay. If the babies were given Argentinean or Chilean nationality, that was because they were born in Argentinean or Chilean research bases, and the same rule as being born at sea applies where babies have the nationality of the vessel's country flag.
