The Tower of London is hardly gothic. It's in typical Norman style, so therefore romanesque. The bridge is in gothic revivalist style because that was sort of the 19th century romanticised view of medieval architecture. Rather than matching the style of the Tower, it's more of an idealised attempt at creating this (faux-)medieval milieu.

We have the same soggy clay in San Francisco, so when they needed to build a subway under the bay, they built a tunnel on land and sunk it underwater. I try not to think about it too much-for some reason it’s more unnerving than just a regular tunnel.

Sorry, as a Middlesbrough local, I have to be a pedant: The Transporter Bridge does not lift vehicles/people upwards. It carries them across at road level on a gondola. We also have(/had) a bridge, the Newport Bridge, that lifted its middle section straight upwards to let boats through. It's very cool.

I look forward to the episode on the tunnels. Thanks to this episode I actually looked into it and yeah, there's only 1 bridge East of Tower Bridge and it's the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge which is tall enough to allow ship traffic to move under it. There's even a road that just becomes a ferry port when it hits the river because that's how serious they were about maritime travel. Fantastic work as always Jay!

I'm not a Brit, but I've been to London twice in my life, and since the first time I saw Tower Bridge when I was a kid, I fell in love with it. I don't remember why I liked it so much, but I thought, and I still think that it is a beautiful sight. In all seriousness (I know, I came to the wrong place) there are really only 3 contenders for most famous/iconic bridges in the world: Tower Bridge, Golden Gate Bridge, Brooklyn Bridge. Even though I'm a homer, in all likelihood Brooklyn comes in 3rd. Honorable mentions to Sydney Harbour (design based on another NYC bridge, Hell Gate Bridge), Ponte Vecchio, Ponte di Rialto, Millau Viaduct.

The Millau viaduct is my favourite of the bunch, mainly because of the way it was constructed. Instead of lifting the span into place, it was inched along using devices inspired by sewing machines guided by lasers.

I had a lovely experience in london with a friend. We were going to visit the Tower of London, decided the tickets were too expensive and walked across the bridge instead. Then we got lost in Southwark until we found an underground station instead of just walking back across the bridge. The highlight of getting lost was finding a street sign for 'Gaywood Street' which appealed to the sense of humour of two recent high school graduates XD

I was born in a London suburb in the 1960s, and even I didn't actually know how Tower Bridge got its name. I genuinely thought it was because it had towers in it. I suppose a few seconds of reflection would have made me realise how unlikely that was.
