The guitarist is Adrian Belew, of the band King Crimson. Someday, you should react to one of King Crimson's performances from the TV show Fridays (the songs "Elephant Talk" or "Thela Hun Jinjeet" are classics). He has also played with Laurie Anderson, David Bowie, TomTom Club, and Paul Simon. He is a musical icon in his own right.

This version is from Rome 1980. This whole concert is online. The guitar player is Adrian Belew. He also was a member of King Crimson, David Bowie,s and Frank Zappa’s band. He is considered one of the best guitar players of all time.

There’s a side project with producer Brian Eno and David Byrne called My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts. They taped and looped weather reports, preachers, African rhythms, polyrhythms, static and made instrumentals around the recordings. Predates sampling by a couple of years. Following this, came Fear Of Music and Remain In Light. Those albums incorporated a lot of Afro fusion, funk and Latin rhythms in their music that never went away, the rest of their career.

I had the very first model Sony Walkman and I would listen to 'My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts.' constantly in 1982, walking around at night. My favorite from that album is Moonlight in Glory. I have a cassette with the original tracklist (including "Qu'ran" that was removed from later editions).

That is one of my all time favourite albums and I've bought it over and over again. If it goes missing I must replace it, and I can't be without it for too long. I now live in west Africa with the best music, but still need this from time to time! I can also see how I ended up here and playing drums and kora being directly related to listening to My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts as a teenager nearly 40 years ago.

_Fear of Music_ is a great album. Lots of great stuff there, including _Cities, Drugs, Animals_ (about a man who thinks that animals are laughing at him behind his back), and especially _I Zimbra_ is a very funky number. _Nothing But Flowers_ is a lovely song. But one of my favourite early Heads songs is _Warning Sign._ That's a strange, creepy song.

Jamel, if you want to witness insanity on a stage, look up Parliament Funkadelic - Standing On The Verge Of Gettin' It On - Houston 1976. One of the most, and no exaggeration, legendary shows ever put to film. And in 1976 it Was put to film. On this cut Fuzzy Haskins goes absolutely other world. Out beyond Pluto or some shizzle. And it even has the audio and video in sync!

Hell, she can be upstairs and God forbid somebody mentions concert downstairs. 10 seconds or less and she’ll be downstairs telling anybody who’ll listen about 1976 when Parliament played in the 713! Talking Heads owes a lot to their African, Caribbean, American Southern Folk (native American stomp, spirituals, cajun, etc) and other world music influences. The cool thing is they know it, use the style unashamed, and do it justice.

I agree with you about the lyrics. The words are a collage, like the beats and the grooves. The line that’s always stood out for me is “All I want is to breathe, won’t you breathe with me.” It reminds us that breathing is so important.

I can almost guarantee you would recognize bits from their song "Genius of Love" as it is one of the most sampled songs of the 80s. They performed it in Stop Making Sense. It's just fun

The immortal Adrian Belew on lead guitar. David Bowie famously "stole" him from Frank Zappa . Zappa had discovered Belew in 1977 playing in a cover band in a Nashville bar. Brian Eno eventually led Belew from Bowie to the Heads.

The lead guitarist in the white t-shirt, who had previously played with Frank Zappa and David Bowie, is Adrian Belew. Later he played with the version of King Crimson that started in the early 80's, and also has his own albums out. The live album this touring band recorded is called "The Name Of This Band Is Talking Heads". Especially the songs "Houses In Motion", "Crosseyed And Painless", and "The Great Curve".

“Remain in Light” is a masterpiece, and the touring band for this album was on fire with energy, as this video shows. The other bassist here, by the way, was Busta Cherry Jones (he died young, alas, but made some good contributions to Eno’s first album “Here Cone the Warm Jets” and Byrne & Eno’s “My Life in the Bush of Ghosts”). If you want another Talking Heads-King Crimson connection, seek out the track “Under Heavy Manners”-Robert Fripp on guitar, Jones playing some funky bass, and David Byrne losing his mind on lead vocals.

There are are 2 live performances of the band on youtube in the year 1980. Both of them breath taking. This one in Rome and another one in Dortmund. I guess that's when David came up with the idea of making a film that led to the making of Stop Making Sense. I just wish Andrian was in the film too!!!!

You should listen to The Modern Lovers. Jerry Harrison, who played guitar in the Talking Heads, was their original guitarist. Astral Plane and Pablo Picasso are some of their great songs. Love your stuff!

"The Great Curve" next (the studio version). The guitarist making all the amazing sounds at the beginning is Adrian Belew. A guitar genius - he's worked with David Bowie, Talking Heads, frank Zappa... and with another band you need to check out sometime, King Crimson.

I had the blessing to see the Talking Heads in Nashville in 1983 which was about the end of the band's peak IMO. It was a very diverse crowd present for an integrated band that was 100% dancing the entire show (both band and audience that is). I was a Dead Head (and still am), and I thought the T. Heads albums were good, but I had no idea what I was in for. My crew were hippies. Directly in front of us was a row of Rastas with long dreads. Behind was a row of punks with mohawks and safety pins piercing their faces. The rafters of the Vanderbilt basketball auditorium directly overhead were bouncing on their supports due to the dancing upstairs. Yet for whatever reason we all just trusted that it was going to be ok. With such high group consciousness, the entire universe rejoiced!

Great reaction to an amazing band that had grown so much since Psycho Killer - bringing in funk and world music elements, and expanding the touring band to support it. They had so much firepower on stage for that tour.

Btw...the salt & pepper shaker looking percussion instrument is called a cabasa. It works by having multiple strings of metal beads wrapped around a wheel that has a metal washboard type surface, and when you spin the wheel, the beads scrape along the rough washboard. They come in different sizes, and the larger they are, the louder they are.

as you can see this live is from the Italian national broadcasting TV "RAIUNO" and the live performance is from the concert in Roma in 1980, I was there, the place is PALAUER, an event incredible, Talking Heads, David Byrne, Tina Weymnouth, Chris Franz and Jerry Harrison, were ahead of the time!!!

From the 1980 Album REMAIN IN LIGHT I recall a review comment at the time that likened this song to "listening to 2 different radio stations at the same time". REMAIN IN LIGHT is MY FAVOURITE TALKING HEADS ALBUM. Had it in my SONY Walkman, played 1000 times! 🍒✌🍁✌🍒

I was sleeping with my headphones on one night and this song came on. I woke like a shot! It was a clarion call from some long forgottentime I my past. I'm probably a year younger than you, Jamel, but I instantly recognized this sign from my childhood. It was crazy. There are so many layers as polyrhythms going on at the same time on this track.

Glad you liked it, Jamel! One thing I love about this performance and this period of Talking Heads is white and black artists making beautiful, powerful music together. Everyone given their space to shine, but being even better together. Bringing together deep funk and avant garde rock and making something innovative and timeless. I wish that kind of unity and cultural collaboration was more common today. And also I don't know exactly what Byrne's lyrics are about in this song, but the refrain "All I want is to breathe" certainly carries a different meaning and weight today. The heat goes on. Oh, and I would second the suggestion of The Great Curve from this same performance. Whereas Born Under Punches is a slow burn, The Great Curve is a speeding funk locomotive.

Adrian Belew goes wild. Saw him live few years back on club stage. Adrian Belew Power Trio includes Julie Slick on bass and Eric Slick on drums. Wonderful experience. He joked about playing with Zappa and being a band member in King Crimson. Nice guy really.

I saw The talking Heads Live in Htfd.,Ct, Touring on Remain In Light with Adrian Belew on guitar, eventually 12 people on stage. Stunning and shocking. The album still overwhelms me emotionally.

I love all of your talking heads reactions. You should check out "This Must Be The Place (naive melody)" and "Wild Wild Life"! While were on the topic, I recall hearing someone say that freeways are the cathedrals of our time. Certainly wasn't me though.
