@@JAYREAD Maybe, but considering it;s a GT rather than a sports car, auto is just as appropriate as a manual trans, possibly more so as day to day driver. Look forward to the next vid.

Smart & wise decision not to pursue a manual conversion, which would’ve been very costly & much more complex. I too explored the idea of going down this route many years ago, but after talking to a Porsche 928 specialist who quickly convinced me not to. The 928 is a very complex, well engineered car & with the layout of the rear transaxle set up, there is a lot more work involved in such a conversion which = very expensive. It would be best to sell & buy a manual 928, but they are quite few in between compared to the majority being the auto slug box. Although the torque from the V8 kinda suits the auto, but unless you’ve driven a manual 928, you will not know what you’re missing. Performance wise, would recommend a nice custom free exhaust system including headers.

No doubt a manual would be a great 928 driving experience, but no doubt about it, replacing the auto trans with a new unit was absolutely the smart move! ENJOY!

It's like we both have a feeling in our guts about "but... surely that's too much" when it comes to what we originally had in mind to invest. Yes, I definitely have a limit, and I've used your figures and others' when it comes to making my best guess. But my 928 S4 was my father's. And it might take awhile, and it might not be back to tip top shape. But it'll be in GOOD shape. And it'll have been worth it. And yours is too. Appreciate you bringing us along this journey.

I have owned my 87 for almost 10 years now and @ 160K plus miles, have been fortunate enough to have purchased one without all the deferred maintenance, which is by far the number one criteria when looking for a 30 plus year old car. Spending that money up front for the will keep you from spending it chasing each and every issue. I have been able to enjoy mine from day one, with the only downtime being either for routine maintenance ( 2x tb/wp's) intake refresh, suspension, motor mounts, recent radiator swap (go with the CSF) a/c upgrade, alternator upgrade, super clamp and torque tube bearing replacement ( Black Sea Engineering like yours) tires, brakes, rotors, fuel lines (Greg Browns are best) and a host of other small repair items mostly age and wear related. My wife and I have no issues driving daily or long distance in what is arguably one of the best designed/engineered Porsches ever made. I feel for you and can only say that once you finally iron out these "pre-existing" conditions the journey will be well worth it. It also help if you can DIY some things and save some $$'s. Good luck and I will be following your progress.

Awesome video Jay. Like my 1985 928, I've spent more than it will ever be worth. But, it's the joy of restoring a classic Porsche to driving condition. I have six other Porsches and this is still one of my favorites to drive. Probably because I've sorted so many issues and like you still have a few to more to address. Keep up the great videos I enjoy watching them. Your an inspiration to all of us 928 owners who have invested our time and money into these under appreciated cars! And they really do drive nice!

At 86k on the odometer in 1992, was not many alternatives back then even with an independent shop…it was a Porsche part or a Porsche part$$$$. The transaxle synchronizer issue, a short in that wonderful foot tub panel…we parted company…but will never forget that driving experience nor the sound of that aluminum V8 howl…was not the fastest, but such a smooth driving experience…thank you and amazing efforts! Hi Jay, Good timing re your progress on your 928✅ You hit the “nail on head” Re the Joy of driving the car, they are a true GT touring car, regardless of being a money pit,and it’s great you have a motivated mechanic That helps heaps🥳 Thus far with my car it’s been problematic with finding someone motivated, and does the job properly, and that’s why I’m going the LS 6.0 conversion Like yourself,I had considerable work carried out on the engine etc Euro spec cams, msd headers etc, powder coated intake runners etc,and when the ran it boogied nicely ✅ Then it would stop(electrical gremlins)😩 No one has been able to sort it out,and we call it (it could be this or that) Consequently the LS engine is where I’m at The car is really a mint example for a 1981 110 miles from new,Platinum, full leather ( black) and a manual,on Cup rims and Nitto tyres I have new Koni shocks,Springs, and it will sit an inch lower, which gives a nice stance✅ So will see where it goes Jay,one the major holdups for me,has been my health Bi Lateral lung replacement! Happy motoring Jay Cheers Frank

Hi Jay. Well done to you for improving your car - and setting aside the cost compared to value of the car. I am on a similar journey with my XJ-S - I just love the car, don’t plan to sell it ever and enjoy “investing” in the car - the return being pleasure of ownership and the driving experience rather than financial. This is the first old car that I have renovated - the key thing that I have learnt is to be very selective about who works on the car and not to expect a single garage to be the best at repairing / improving all aspects of the car - I will probably end up with 4 or 5 specialists that I trust who will each attend to different aspects of the car. I have always liked the 928 - a great looking, iconic, powerful car of its era - and so I am glad to see your enthusiasm for looking after your car. Keep up the good work and I look forward to more videos. Peter

Hi Jay. Wow, an NOS gearbox was available! Congrats! Your face says it all! One thing I must emphasise. Make sure that you take progressive photos and keep receipts (which I'm sure that you are meticulous with) and try to increase the insurance value of your vehicle factoring your upgrades. I have recently had a no fault accident and my car was a total loss. Luckily I could have removed all the upgrades that I did (wheels, stereo etc), otherwise I would have taken a bigger loss. While the firewall mod is true, the manual swap pays for itself many times over. No one is going to care it was an automatic with a manual swap, just give them all the automatic parts and they can change it back. I will tell you it's more than just the firewall though, you need a different crossmember for the gearbox along with a few other things. It's still a better car every day of the year as a manual, and you will get your money back several times as long as you don't get too ripped off buying a manual box (likely).
