Thierry Nardone takes me on a full tour of his 928 restomod to show me the concept and how it has been designed and engineered. We should be excited by this because he is literally the only person in the world that is giving the 928 a future but we must hope that he is doing it the right way. What is the right way? Well, in this video we will examine what makes a good restomod and then, as we go on our tour, we will measure this restomod’s performance against the metrics set!
Is this likely to be a big hit with the market? We examine the car and, most importantly, its creator. Join me for a full tour of this AMAZING car!
0:00 Introduction
1:29:55 What is this car and what are the objectives?
4:58:53 Tour of the show car and exclusive news!
6:26:39 How much engineering has gone into the car?
11:33:05 The design of the front lights!
13:13:48 Who are the vendors?
16:02:38 The engine details! Also the weight!
18:32:37 Tour of the interior!
24:31:50 Wrap up: so is this car just a body kit or is it engineering! We resolve the video!

This restomod is exactly what it needs to be: the transportation of the forms, the spirit, the intuition of those engineers who began to establish this work of art some 50 (!) years ago. I myself (54) picked up his 928 with my father in Zuffenhausen in 1978. I now drive an S4. I was an automotive journalist and am really ´chemically cleansed´ when it comes to performance and new vehicles. But the 928 is still so relevant today that I am amazed almost every day. I would buy this restomod in a heartbeat, it is brilliantly good, thanks to its spiritual fathers. Yesterday and today. Thank you for this interview and video! Best regards from Hamburg

This reimagining of the 928 is at the level of Singer doing it with the 911. This is an exquisitely designed car, and very appropriate for one of the most underrated Porsche models in its historical lineup. Now we get to see those 'ahead of its time' designs modernized in this specimen. The black housing for the retractable headlights fade into the night making it look like two orbs over the car. The tail horizontal tail light is out of this world, the detail is beautiful.

Finally a restomod that prioritizes comfort over performance, having a GT as the goal is closing a huge gap in the restomod market… Bravo As for the wheels, they are clearly inspired by the OEM Pirelli wheels ❤

I actually had 2 928. One a 928 S4 manual, the other a GTS manual. I like what he did, BUT there’s one thing I wish he did differently: The lights! I wish he would have made them flush AND made a less cluttered rear design. The rear with those edges and stripes is so busy, compared to the clean, flowing, organic body! Best wishes to everyone nonetheless!!

Thanks for producing this interview. Wanted to see a good walk around for a while now. It's neat to hear the conceptual intent and I'm most impressed with keeping the original 928 engine and transaxle. The expense of this project must be astronomical. So many excellent styling cues taken from excellent Porsche sources including within the entire 928 line, like the 3-spoke steering wheel from the early 928. The reimagined gullideckel 'manhole' wheels are something else, art in its own right. The inspiration from the period racing wheels is really what sets them apart. Clearly this project has a long way to go, and will need deep pockets and/or investors to realize entirely. I'll be cheering along the way, and wish Thierry the best! -Jim, 928 Classics

@@DKarGarage properly sorted, absolutely. The youngest 928 is nearing 30 years old, most are more like 40. I’d figure the cost to buy one, then 10k in deferred maintenance right away. Be prepared for that. It’s cheaper if you can turn some wrenches. Pretty much a mechanic’s car at this point unless you have deep pockets

@928pcar 7 ай бұрын
@@DKarGarageI'd venture to say the 968 is going to give you less problems than a 928 would. You have to reeeally love the 928 to justify it's costs. It was one of the most expensive cars in the world and has advanced systems for the time. These systems will likely need attention after 40 or so years, many being vacuum assisted. I would choose elsewhere unless you're obsessed with the shape/history/era like I am. Some of the NLA parts will make your eyes water. You have to be ready to jump full stop with a 928. Many get into them and don't know what they're committing to. Once sorted, a 928 is a quite unique driving experience. I'm currently building a euro spec 84 race car. If you aren't buying one with very recent and extensive maintenance history, go with the Honda or elsewhere. Do not buy a cheap 928 because there's no such thing. It will cost you one way or another

What an amazing take on the 928. Very fitting the bar is set so high with Thierry as I have always understood what the 928 meant to Porsche. It is nice to see such a well thought out plan perfectly coupled between design, engineering and artistry to keep this model alive.

This car looks great - like a Singer is to a 911! I’ve owned 12 Porsches and the 928S4 was by far my favorite (except for my current Cayman S :) Not discussed in this video is the Achilles heel for these cars - the fact that everything that moves on the car is moved by a vacuum tube or a computer with a 40-year-old printed circuit board. Of course all of that stuff is set to fail around now and the car has to be comprehensively dismantled to repair. And if you need to replace a computer you are replacing it with a computer that has sat on a shelf for 40 years. Not for the faint of heart!

There are a few good people in the community that specialize in updating the computers. Its not that big of deal. The78-79 had more vacuum lines. As time progresses, they started to move more electronic. There are pros and cons to both systems. But I don't care what car you buy that's 40 years old, stuff will need to be replaced.

It's not bad looking. But personally I would have kept everything from 928 GTS exterior and just modernized the front end. Without popup headlights. And perhaps changed the rear lights to leds. 928 shape is so timeless that it didn't need any other exterior changes. GTS was the pinnacle. Cheers.

Back in 2002 I sold my 928 GT manual and I have driven and owned lots of GT’s and sportscars since, but I still long for that great 928! The design has aged so well and that V8 with that dogshift was just unique. This restomod looks great too and it will probably be the better car, but my choice would be to have a 100% original restored 928.

This video made me appreciate not only this restomod much more (so much thought and design work went into it!) but equally the original 928, as this shows how hard and costly it is to improve on the original design. The feature I love most is the indented rear lights, combining the better looks of the old body style with the broader S4 lights. Amazing job.

IMO he has to do a lot more to make it not just an extensive body kit... what Singer did is pretty cool, but the original 928 is already a far more rare and special car than a 911... probably best to leave it original... when you do a lot to a car and leave the old rubber seals and body gaps it just doesn't look right. Do people forget that the 928 broke the world land speed record for production cars in 1986. On this body kit the panel gaps are old-school, need to be updated... there are plenty of 928 body kits, IMO the original body is fine, what usually lacks in 928's are the interior pieces that deteriorate quickly and the aftermarket is lacking. If he's going to do all that carbon he should just make a new car out of carbon, but all the parts and tech and body gaps and seals should be modernized.

One can imagine why this would be a success. Deservedly so. It was such an amazing and unique concept. While Porsche don't always design cars based on beauty alone, this Teutonic crosser of Continents was unique and without peer. Maybe a later model Aston might be in the same ballpark. Sure it had it's idiosyncrasies but cast your mind back to the 70's and 80's which were it's domain. What other vehicle could you compare it with? Most people don't realise just how great the 944 turbo was either. It was a direct competitor to the 928. Was indecently fast. Could cruise at 250kph all day. Had very good storage in the rear. Probably a little too compact to perambulate guests in the rear that weren't 2 year olds in any comfort...but that's by the by. Both cars were extremely capable and still worthy of investment today.

I had been buying new 911s since 82 as my daily driver. I decided to keep the one l had been driving (now a Singer) and lease a new one in 95. There was a loaded to the gills 95 928 GTS on the showroom floor with sticker just shy of $100k. My guy there said the had some kind of lease incentive so l drove it, loved it, leased it. I almost wished l had bought it when the lease was up. It was fast and comfortable and if the opportunity presented itself it could cruise all day at 150 mph. It was a manual too. I had a Testarossa at the time and it did everything better than the Ferrari. I turned it in with 38k miles and got another 911. When this guy has some completed cars l might check one out.

You do realize that its a base 928 with basically a wide body kit, and some new LED lights front and back... that's it. The reason why the rear tail lights are not flush is because of the wide body kit and with flushed lights it would give the rear what we call a big ass. So the lines are deceptive in a way by not making it flush. But other than some new wheels, the body kit redesigned lights and front bumper. Its pretty stock.

I think the statement "only person in the world trying to give the 928 a future" is a bit shortsightedf. Many vendors, including porsche themselves, still make tons of parts for these cars. And people like you and I are restoring and talking about them online, which is also good for the cars. But I agree that Nardone has taken it to a different level and place than others have since Koenig, Buchmann, Strosek in a long time.

The original flat rear fender was weird. When I was a kid the wide body turbo version by Koenig Specials made me bananas...It looked spectacular and bullet fast! I wonder if next phase of the project will be some version where is optional transparent polycarbonate up opening sunroof instead of full carbon fibre panel.... Do customers refer to flexible ground clearance via some hydraulilc units providing lift for getting over speed humps? Where I live the sports cars really suffer for belly, front lip and side skirts damage due to high curbs and pot holes... Was mentioned 6-speed a manual one? I hope so....

Fix-upgrade where needed. But change for the sake of change is ruining a beautiful car that was ahead of its time and STILL is holding its own.

I don’t think anyone is doing this just for change. There are significant improvements and engineering here. Two things can happen at once. This isn’t replacing those of us that still enjoy the originals! ❤️

This Porsche 928 is a fantastic restomod. For me It captures all of the original timeless design intent and then some without going OTT. I’d swap that awful looking steering wheel though. Ive come to regard the restomod concept as like giving a classic car its flowers. In other words, the automotive equivalent of bestowing upon a renowned car a status worthy of preservation in some archive for its cultural and aesthetic value, but giving the keys only to few wealthy individuals to act as keepers of the archive. I believe the original car manufacturers could potentially capture this market away from the specialists if they recognise that and took it as a serious business model. Surely it’d work out cheaper for the enthusiasts to get to own and cherish such a wonderful updated archive classic. I don’t understand why the original famous manufacturers like Porsche are not into this and believe only in pushing the technology envelope in car design as the only business model that matters. I cannot believe theres not plenty of scope and demand for legendary classic cars brought up to date to satisfy emissions, other eco friendly objectives and performance efficiency targets. This demand is sure to grow before we get totally lost in a world of faceless and incredibly boring Chinese off the shelf Evs that have less character than a wet cardboard box.

The bad: The lighting looks like it's just fancy for fancy's sake. The headlights should at least be color matched. Now they just stick out and shout "look at me!". They integrated so well before because when they were down, they occupied the whole cutout in the fenders. Now you see all that grey color behind them even when down. The lenses have even more of an eyeball look to them, making the car look even more odd. And the taillights couldn't be more derivative. He said they cost $80k. I'm inclined to believe the designer took 20 minutes to look at insert-car-with-lightbar-here and added some jewelry elements inside. I can see they probably added the white elements up high to somewhat match with the items in the front bumper, but it distracts from the lines in the car. Unless the car were white, then maybe not. Get rid of the central piece. This is not a 911, Taycan, Rivian R1T, Prius, Ford Lightning, or Dodge Charger. Updating the roof structure is just a money grab. Singer is putting full carbon bodies on their work, so this firm thinks it will be a slam dunk to charge a bit extra for a carbon roof. The benefit of body rigidity does not justify the cost. These buyers aren't going to be flogging these cars on the track. Simple structural braces on the inside or down below would've probably sufficed. Interior is is simplified, but ya know what? It's boring. Not everyone wants the whole clean, linear minimalist look just because Tesla sells it. E.g. I think it's safe to say anyone would rather have a Mercedes SL interior over a Tesla's. This car is more of a GT, therefore it should've had a more...comfy feel. Other than the tan upholstery, nothing looks comfy about it. This car's interior looks like more of a sporty Tesla, not an enhanced 928. The good: front bumper design is sharp, modern, and functional. They updated the engine (hopefully it will be easier to repair), and the wheel design is top notch. They really fill out the fenders well. Any body work done to widen the body is well integrated. It does not beg for attention, a la RWB 911s. The silhouette of the 928 is its signature, and their modifications to it look great so far.

The 924 front treatment is okay, but are rectangular headlight divots an improvement? Or the aero mods on the sills? The interior is slick, but updated modern electronics help do that. Crucible Coachworks has a 928 on youtube with some interesting body mods that are well done.

I'd rather have a pristine original than this. That proposed interior does nothing for me, especially the instrument panel. Losing the movable binnacle is certainly removing some of the original character, although maybe a working cluster would look ok (the mock-up in that interior is awful). The front end doesn't look "sharp" enough, and I can't imagine that the three little pillars on the headlights are as aerodynamic as the original enclosed case. And what happened to the rear wiper? For me, part of the charm of driving an older vehicle is using it as a time machine to experience what is was like back when it was new. I don't mind a few upgrades, but for me this just goes too far. Changing out the while body other than the doors seems pretty extreme. That said, if this is someone's bag, then more power to them and I hope they enjoy it. But it's not for me.
@JAYREAD
@JAYREAD 7 ай бұрын
That’s fair enough! I must say though, I am a HUGE fan. When you see it in the flesh, it’s astonishing. I think it depends on whether you can get behind a restomod. The aim of these things is to bring them a bit towards the modern day. That’s a balancing act and it can be too much for some. I understand that.
