Jayson Tatum is one of the most bizarre superstars in the NBA Today. The Boston Celtics star has had a rollercoaster playoff run where he has constantly flip flopped between playing some of the best basketball of the year, to being a non factor. Tatum's inconsistency has become a recurring criticism and this year has arguably been the worst. Yet the highs for Tatum are still so high. It's why Jayson Tatum is the weirdest superstar in the NBA Today...

As a Celtics fan Tatum is an odd case cause he really feels like a top 5 player in the league, but sometimes he kinda just fucks around and shoots 2-10 on side step threes despite him being one of the worst off the dribble three point shooters this year. He and the team are gonna come back tonight and Tatum will probably score like 41 tonight just cause why not

He is an enigma so people don't know what to think of him. He flexes and shouts when he is on a roll but that's it.He doesn't trash talk or taunt so the opposing team's fans feel meh. Mj did that but feeds on that negative energy to power his game so opponents are really scared of him. On the other side, the celtics find ways to lose horribly at home so positive energy does jack shit to tatum's game. It's hard to be loved/hated when you flip flop.

Tatum and Brown are the Durant and Westbrook of the Celtics Or maybe the Tracy McGrady and Vince Carter of the decade. Two alphas who defer to their teammate cause there's a lowkey power struggle between the two over who really is the star
@ballsballsballs3617
@ballsballsballs3617 Жыл бұрын
Fact! Been saying this for a couple of years. I feel like there is an extra level to browns game and everyone kinda knows it but since Tatum was the one who developed faster they built the offense around him more and kinda made him the “guy” meanwhile brown is arguably just as good or maybe even a little better than Tatum especially when it comes to scoring. I think Celtics lose this year and for both the Celtics future and Jaylen brown individually they need to go their separate ways.
@basedat4651
@basedat4651 Жыл бұрын
@@ballsballsballs3617 I respect your opinion, but I completely disagree. Tatum and Brown have stated how much they love playing with each other and they truly play and fit well with each other. In Game 1 vs Miami Tatum was going off and then Jaylen had his turn. Coach Zu should’ve ran plays for Tatum but ran 2 that lead to turnovers, the pump fake dribble shouldn’t have been a turnover in my opinion even tho it doesn’t matter 😂. They ran iso for Jaylen even tho Tatum was cooking w/ no timeouts being called from Joe! I disagree that he’s a “inconsistent superstar” or “fake superstar” by a country mile. He’s statistically one of the most efficient players ever, that’s a different point 😂. Jaylen is the perfect number 2 to Tatum’s number 1. Jaylen is the perfect “clean up crew guy” for Tatum. If Tatum is playing like garbage or sloppy then Brown can go off if need be. But if Brown is hot from the start they let him cook. Tatum’s inconsistent first Finals appearance was mainly due to a wrist injury, which he still hasn’t had surgery on, and it being his first finals. LeBron played horrible in his first Finals as well which I haven’t noticed many people say. The Philly series was a mess for a couple games on his part. Smart was a large part of saving the series w/ Tatum’s 4th quarter Game 6 and 51 pt Game 7. But he wasn’t as bad as everyone makes it out to be. In order from Game 1 through 7: 39-11-5 on 14 for 25 7-7-3 on 1-7 in 19 minutes 27-10-5 on 10-20 24-18-6 on 9-20 36-10-5 on 11-27 19-9-6 on 5-21 but 16 in the 4th 51-13-5 w/ 0 tov in Game 7 @Serocco I agree with you on the Durant and Westbrook take. That’s a great comparison. But their isn’t really a power struggle. They made the team to compliment Jayson & Jaylen as their go to stars (the gap between the two is bigger than the media has portrayed it to be) instead of just around Tatum. That’s my opinion which doesn’t hold true value 😂, read my essay if you want idc 😂 Take care, God Bless! 🙏

Finding this video just after the All Star break the season after this video was made, it strikes me how much better the C's are as a whole now. Tatum's a lot more consistent this year and we're not in as deep of a shit if he has an off night because we have 3-4 reliable offensive options at all times as opposed to basically only Brown last season. Tatum has also struck me as a lot more goal oriented this season - it's basically win or bust. That means that he's putting the team's success over his own individual performance - in this weekend's 116-102 win against the Knicks he was basically invisible on the offense in the first half because Brown was going off and the best choice for the team was playing decoy in the corner while playing stable defence. While he's still our #1 option, we're not rising and falling as much by his performance now that we've added KP and Holiday and DWhite has come into his own as a reliable all around player. I'm eagerly awaiting the playoffs, we might just go all the way this time

There's something weird about the 2 biggest Kobe worshipper, namely Tatum and Booker. It's like they model their game after Kobe but not their mentality. When things go well, boy do they get hot. But when pressure and stakes are on the line, they disappear. The Kobe I knew and grew up watching certainly doesn't roll with that kind of mentality.

Honestly, when it comes to the "fear" factor, then I guarantee that Embiid, and maybe even Giannis to a degree "fear" Tatum as much as another superstar can fear another player. They have both experienced, multiple times, Tatum taking over a crucial playoff game and going off. Heck, Giannis openly talked about his game 6 performance during the all-star game picks.

i honestly do think tatum and really the whole celtics team needs that fight or flight response to really be their best bc ever since they swept the nets in the first round of last years playoffs they've gone to 7 games or at least 6 games with every team since then and they drop game 1s or game 5s and go down 3-2 and then have to comeback on teams. i think that goes hand in hand w tatum not having that killer instinct like MJ, kobe, lebron, etc bc him and the celtics let teams hang around too much and then go to 6 or 7 and then are too tired when they get deeper into the playoffs bc they end up having to play more games then their opposition. idk why but they seem like they just don't have the mentality to show no mercy and close a team out and beat them in 4 or 5. im interested to see how they respond in game 2 tonight against the Heat and the rest of the playoffs.

there is a difference between being the face of the league and being the best player in the league. Jokic as good as he is he doesn't have the sort of play-style/charisma to be the face of the league. I'll give you an example in the 2000s tim duncan was the best player but the face of the league was kobe because kobe had a more entertaining personality/playstyle when compared to duncan.

hit the nail on the head with this analysis. you can also apply these points to why devin booker isn't a true superstar either. it's really annoying seeing these two propped up as the "next kobes", when they CLEARLY don't have even a fraction of the edge or the killer mentality that was a hallmark of kobes aura. it's like, "oh mid range centric shooting guard who constantly talks about idolizing kobe, must have the mamba mentality". it's such a lazy piss poor take and i'm glad someone actually articulated the reasons why these two don't actually have superstar intangibles.
@Yoofen

The actual reason is that the way he isn't considered someone in contention for the face of the league for many is because the way he plays isn't an anomaly. He is just really fucking good. There isn't anything particularly different about what he does. You can't point to his athleticism like Ja, or his insane shooting like steph. He isn't a freak of nature like lebron or giannis. He doesn't even have a particularly interesting personality like kobe or kawhi. By all accounts he is a nice guy who is a great dad. He is just averagely really fucking good at basketball and a pretty stand up guy. that doesnt generate headlines.

Tatum lacks that killer instinct. Remember when the celts had a team meeting lead by Smart to verbalize the pecking order of the line up? If you need a team meeting to decide that you are the alpha, then you are not really the alpha. I blame Kyrie for this. I think he held Tatum from becoming the team leader from the beginning and its taking him time to get to that mentality now. But you watch some games when he gets a couple bad calls from the refs and he gets angry. He is literally unguardable when he plays angry. He needs to play with that chip on his shoulder every game. Kind of like how Kobe did it.

Tatum is fraudulent. He doesn’t have the leadership intangibles as a Lebron, Kobe or Jordan. He doesn’t scare you like Steph or even Jimmy Butler cause he’s too inconsistent. His skill set is also too close to Jaylen Brown so it’s not a typical co-star relationship on the Celtics and half the time Jaylen is bailing him out, but Jaylen is the one in trade talks whenever the Celtics so much as lose a random game in December. He’s a weird superstar cause you don’t feel it. Above these stats, you can usually feel who’s the man on the court when you either play hoops or are a real fan.

for me whole boston team for last couple years is totaly weird, sometimes I think they far far better than other teams in NBA and sometimes I just think they are just avarage NBA team like Hawks. Also LJ dont have that "dog" inside of him but he ended many dynasties and teams in NBA. Only this playoff run Memphis teamm chemistry is destroyed, GSW dynasty is probably over and LJ with LA did it. You don't fear LJ as person butyou fear he will win and you will need to face sport consequences. Look at coach of Toronto Dwane Casey from 2018, he won best coach of year literally 2 days after he got fired lol, because what LJ did to Toronto.

Tatum is what I like to call, The Inconsistent Superstar. Some days he’s hot, some days cold. But when it comes to those really clutch situations like that game 7 where it’s do or die, he gives every inch of himself to ensure that the Celtics WILL win; that beast mode known by many as the REAL “mamba mentality”. I think Kobe truly had a lasting effect on Tatum and now he just needs to learn to bring out this beast at will. I believe we are witnessing the coming of a legitimate Kobe-esque star that will be a household name everywhere. Just give him more time to really hone in on this feeling while in this playoffs.

5:06 bro im not a warriors or a celtics fan but your comment saying nobody gave the celtics a chance to win against the warriors in the finals is straight up revisionist history bro, u cant cut tatum that much slack. ESPN and a majority of people picked the celtics to win. i know it was still the warriors dynasty but they weren't the unstoppable KD warriors. all im trying to say is u cut him way too much slack with that comment lmao.

the entire time he went on that tangent. he was like "was he supposed to beat lebron?" instead of actually sifting through the individual games to find the same inconsistency that's happening rn. "idk where this reputation comes from" 😂

For me, it's how he plays the game pushing off consistently and complains a lot at refs that makes me not believe him when he has his good games. He seems idk corny, a sensation I would never get from an anthony edwards or Luka Doncic, who i believe is the generation coming up .

I feel like throughout the video you are trying to avoid the obvious answer to your own questions. People don’t consistently expect a big games from Tatum and players don’t fear Tatum because what you already said early in the video. HE’S INCONSISTENT. And he’s good at a lot but not elite at any one skill that the defense have to really overreact to in order to stop when he’s on the court. That’s UNLESS he gets hot on off dribble step back 3s which is already a tough way to score consistently. So the defense most times can live with Tatum trying to score a lot in general. He’s just not an elite offensive option at this stage.

@@user-gz4mq6xb2f Damn you found me on this video too? Ok I see what this is. That good ole nut hugger syndrome. You have literally nothing to counter argue against Tatum being inconsistent especially in the playoffs. Tatum is my 2nd favorite player bro I'm just not a nut hugger like you are. You gotta face the facts. F those regular season numbers and advanced BS. Celtics are expected to compete for rings. And they can't get one because Tatum keeps shrinking.

y’all wanna know why, it’s because he’s a Pisces, and a Pisces only do well when he has the mental edge over their opponent. Steph was also a good example, being called not clutch for so many years yet putting up scoring shows over and over.
