I don't understand why the number of 66,666 cannot be accurate. Battles were fought in certain formations. For the accuracy of each formation, there must be a certain number associated to that particular formation to make it complete. So, this number 66,666 is probably refering to the formation used in this battle as well.

Because 1st of all, sources in ancient time period are RARELY hundred percent reliable, if ever. Secondly, we're talking about the tribal armies. Yes they might possess this many soldiers in total, but they most likely don't had the logistical capacity necessary to deploy such a large army in a single place. Thirdly, large scale formations doesn't exactly require an exact amount of soldiers (just ask any general from any army on earth). In fact, a good commander will ALWAYS prefer to adopt a more flexible formation so that the formation's effectiveness won't be seriously affected if some soldiers died before the main battle began. So yes, it's quite unlikely for the number 66,666 to be accurate.

Mahabharata war happened in the Later Vedic Period by the time Elephants were widely used in battles. Also since the earliest written form we know of the Mahabharata is from between 200 to 400 CE, it's possible that a lot of references in the Mahabharata we know of today were a result of contemporary situations of the time.

To migrate to a more arid lands like the Iranian Plateau and the Central Asian Steppes it wouldn't be reasonable.
